Regardless of the location, survival comes down to food, fire, water, shelter, security, and first aid. How we solve these problems may differ depending on the location.
In this video Jason visits a huge suburban neighborhood and discusses tactics for solving many of these problems and how to develop a survival community when times get tough.

When I was in college we (wife and three small kids) lived in a small apartment that was completely electric. We had an ice storm one year that closed the college and roadways and left us stranded for three days without power. We had lots of food and managed to keep the water running through the slow flow process, but it was freezing. We took the mattress off our bed and moved it into one of the kids rooms since it was the smallest. We then took our 4 man pop up camp tent and put it on the mattress, which insulated us from the floor and made it very comfortable, the then stacked spare comforters on top of the tent to get better insulation, and between that and our sleeping bags and blankets on the inside of he tent we were able to keep comfortably warm when we slept--getting great sleep was important. During the day we kept moving and kept bundled up. We made it through just fine!

Mother in law gave me her vacuum sealer and my wife already likes buying our rice in bulk from Costco. Just got some Mylar bags & oxygen absorbers, and you can actually use Mylar with a vacuum sealer if you cut strips of the vacuum sealer bags from the ribbed side and stick one down in each corner of the Mylar bag. This creates an air channel. You can then make sure the bags actually are heat sealed if you use an iron or hair straightener.

Great video especially since so many more folks live in such and environment and will have some unique challenges as such. Not everyone can buy 50 acres in the middle of know where and live happily ever after, Its just not practical for most of us, but many of us do live in the suburbs! And you made some great points on things to be thinking about.

Death is going to take care of a lot of the human problem in an apocalyptic scenario. You need to have enough resources and skills to make it through the stages that OTHERS will cause: panic violence, unorganized desperation violence, death and/or organized violence. Watch _Last Of Us_ for the post-apocalypse situation. 1.) Panic violence: e.g. fighting over _retail_ products 2.) Unorganized desperation violence: e.g. one or two people fighting to steal _other people's_ property 3.) Death and/or organized violence: e.g. lots of people will die of starvation, roughly, 50 - 100 days after the collapse, marauding gangs go house-to-house threatening occupants to leave immediately _alive_ or die by fire (if anyone thinks they're smart and will fight back by staying inside, they just execute whoever went outside in addition to whoever is inside) I recommend: 1.) a "Rocket" type stove. Something you can fuel with handfuls of twigs or other small combustible materials. Calculate how much material you need for cooking/water purification (if needed) and get it before it's unsafe to be outside foraging. Low cost idea: you can build one out of cinder blocks (various styles, keep a couple spare blocks in case of cracking). 2.) +1 on the rain catchment-barrel-system. During stages 2 - 3, people are going to be _hunting you_ and water sources like drainage ponds are going to be prime hunting grounds, AKA "The X". Stay off _The X_ . The "WaterBob" bathtub bladder storage idea is clever - if you've tested it. 3.) a hiking/camping water purification system - pump/gravity fed and _unscented UNCONCENTRATED bleach_ . A little bleach is going to kill water borne viruses that the rest of your system won't destroy. In normal times, a virus probably won't be your doom, but in an apocalypse, you want to be even more cautious; a virus can make you or your entire team less than fighting-fit. You can't afford to be sick. 4.) Strongly consider... _non electric water distillation_ . You'll be screwed if your only water source is contaminated with chemicals (hopefully you determine this first). Distillation can help. 5.) Bucket toilet. 5 gal. bucket, bags to fit it, a toilet seat lid (they make them to fit), and some chemicals for it. Of course you have TP for the bunghole. 6.) Luxury item: re-purpose an UNUSED lawn/garden pesticide/herbicide PUMP sprayer as a _shower_ . You can probably get all these for under four-hundred-fifty bucks, getting brands that are known and have decent reviews. Nothing sketchy or used from online auction/classified listings, but if the Rocket Stove is NOT the concrete-block type, it's going to push the price closer to the four-fifty range, if not a little higher.

If suburbia planted fruit trees and other flowering trees instead of hardwoods and someone was a bee keeper between the fruit honey and community and backyard gardens I think it’d be possible for the land to support the communities but a half acre of land or even two or three acres isn’t enough alone to support an urban population

I'm keeping to myself. Stocking what I can. I think it's going to be a steady decline as it has been, but then it will hit the tipping point. People will be fed up with the crime, ignorance and corruption then start pushing back. When the crime starts affecting more people on a more personal level. When it hits home and can no longer be shrugged off, then we will get chaos between criminals and people taking it into their own hands because government won't do anything about it now. Lets pray that things turn around before that point because we all know as it is now, who the federal government will back in this situation.

Luckily Im a veteran with 3 combat tours, so a lot of my training is still relevant. We stay in peak physical shape, all our stuff is discreet, we have water 2,000 gallon stored and treated, water collection systems, 1 year of high end dried food, tons of weapons/ammo including more advanced stuff like suppressors, NVG, ballistic plates, thermal. We also have solar and tri fuel generators. If SHTF I plan to train some my neighbors in weapons, first aid, security and combat (they dont know it yet, but they do have the mental and physical fortitude)...we have 6 small lakes in our neighborhood and mostly country around us, so we have a decent chance for self sustainment.....until then I will continue to be the grey man.

We live in burbs and our new HOA want to tun our lake/pond recreational. At least 4 other subdivisions drain into our lake. People put all kinds of things into the storm drainage system. Leaves, motor oil, dog poopy bags are just a few of the items our subdivision has encountered. Catch and release only lake. I can’t imagine swimming in the lake or the cost of insurance.

One of my old boy scout camps is looking for a ranger to live in the small house on the property to do 5 hours of maintenance per week and act as security, and be an emergency point-of-contact. Payment is to live there for free and I work online so it would be perfect. The house is too small for a large family, and it's too far from work for many which is why many of the volunteers don't want the job. One of the main volunteers said "he wants to do the work but not live there". But for my wife and I just starting out we could save up some money from no rent and pay off my student loan in a year and then stay as long as we decide. It would also help my wife decide if she could live more rurally with no financial commitment. She's used to suburbs and apartments and never been camping, but this is only a few minutes from our apartment so even though it feels rural it's still close to everything she wants so she's super on board with the idea. It also has 2 gates, one at the start of the gravel road with a keypad, and one near the house that stays open when camp is in session. Oh did I mention it's on a peninsula in the middle of the lake? 1 entrance baby, and plenty of boats and canoes for a bug out. Also easy to turn a boy scout camp with old school army tents into a "patriot" camp if the time comes.

I had an old Ford ('83) F150 (in 2010) when we moved into suburbia, I got the city callled on me all the time. Finally I painted "el Macho Lawn Service" on it with black spray paint and deliberately parked in the road in front of the house.. the calls finally stopped.. I think people (my neighbors) finally realized how petty they were being.

You should watch Magic Preppers' recent video: "Proof that living rural does not make you safe." I live in a suburban community, and I have stockpiles, a garden, fruit trees and six chickens. I also live in a cul de sac, so not many people come down my street that don't live here, and we can mount a defense far faster than in a rural area. You won't survive living like a lone wolf. It takes a community.

Sucks I became a prepper after buying in suburbia (although we love our neighborhood). Luckily, we have great neighbors, and my friendly wife takes care of the social relations with neighbors. Unfortunately, Im the only gun nut and veteran so far, so Im not sure how they can defend themselves most of them are well educated nice white collar people. I really want to know if I can count on others for security or is it just me.

This looks like a golf community or even a gated access community, so it's hardly the sort of suburban homestead found in abundance around a city. Suburban homes in the counties usually have larger lots and nobody whining if they start catching rainwater. Nobody cares if you have solar panels on your shed, or the fact you have a shed. A half acre plot has plenty of room for water processing, container gardening (you do not want to grow food above a leach field), a wood stove in the basement and 3 cords of firewood. The down side is access since anyone can walk up to your property, so fencing should be ready for installing. Food is a huge problem since the local wildlife will be consumed very quickly by poachers and abandoned house cats. Raising quail, rabbits, chickens and other small animals doesn't require a lot of space but it does require protection from the wildlife that hasn't itself become dinner yet. Any plants you grow will be attacked by insects, birds and humans so invest in hybrid seeds so you have at least some harvests that will be successful. Heirloom seed cultivation can take years to become reliable. Microgreens grown indoors are a compact option, but they'll need a lot of light. People trapped in suburban covenants and governed by a Home Owner's Association are very limited in their options to prep for anything. However, after the crash/calamity, when they have all basically left or expired in their McMansions the community looks like it could support quite a bit of crop production. All those lawns and greenways could be converted quickly into all kinds of varietal and perennial crops.

Lol, rural living is more exciting, or, at least, more imaginative. Guy took a wrong turn and mired up on a logging road so badly he had to hike out. The neighbors called the sheriff because of a suspected serial killer dumping bodies. More seriously, I'm wary of suburbs. If the HOA leans the wrong way, these people can't practice their skills, even gardening. Would they even be allowed a wood pile? Honestly, I wouldn't live anywhere without a well (or anywhere with an HOA). Forget TEOTWAWKI, there's tornadoes, ice storms, and hurricanes.
