I like #1 Buck because it leaves one big hole in the target. # 00 buck is bigger but few pellets and leaves just a few scattered holes. Lucky to have some in the ten ring. With #1 you will need a new target!@@bobg3633

You really need to watch the Seattle U shooting video.. a female student took a full load of birdshot to the chest at maybe 10 to 15 feet and walked away like nothing happened and fully recovered. Birdshot is a repellent and will not put down an attacker

Ft lbs of energy gets distributed throughout each pellet. #8 only has about 2 lbs per pellet. It depends on shot placement and tight patterns. Get shot right in like the eyes or corroded artery I'd say done but body would be way too risky depending on clothing. Good ol foster slugs the way to surely do deer so that'd be my go to.

I prefer #4 Buck as a defensive load, 00 buck if I want to kill something. But nobody is going to take a load of #4 inside 10 yards and walk away from it....

Based on gel block pictures comparing various loads, #4 buck is the best home defense choice. However, pretty much anything is going to get the job done, so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

The cheap Winchester 12ga 2 3/4 00 buck military load groups terribly in my older 870 Remington shotguns, but this is actually a plus. They both group so tightly with Federal Flight Control 00 reduced recoil as to create a rat hole wound at 40 yards. If something goes bump in the night, a bit of spread can be a good thing.

Use a shorter barrel to get wide dispersal from a 12 gauge. Inside of a home,#6 shot is lethal up to 20 feet, even from a short barrel, yet will not leave your home or kill your family in the next room.

PDX1, i have range tested that. the buckshot always spreads in a very predictable pattern around the big ass hole in the center. it's what i recommended, and gave, my niece for her home defense. cause she can miss by a couple of inches and still connect with the target.

Mini shells is the way I went for my Ol’ Lady , 2 bird shot 3 buckshot followed by 2 slugs. Gives enough capacity but still cruiser ready. Laser saddle that shockwave also , they ain’t hard to shoot until you wanna be accurate. We like this setup

@@mantis-mike5882 not as heavy of a kick makes is a great thing , especially for her condition. Not horrible on penetration is a great thing for anything hit that isn’t the target. Little bit bigger shot pattern gives her the best chances of a hit from the beginning. On the very top of it we don’t want to kill anyone so slugs for very last but birdshot to start. It’s personalized to my wife with a chunk of thought, good thoughts too , but it’s definitely not everyone’s answer

#4 or #5 Turkey shot is not a bad choice. Even #6 to #8 when in the average scenario inside a house, you will put majority of the load into your target. Just aim center mass or the center between both collar bones region with these loads and your local corner will be making a house call to clean the mess up.

@@828enigma6 Don't underestimate #4 & #5 turkey shot. Statically it has killed more people in hunting accidents in the 35 to 40yrd range. The average house hallway is about 40 to 80 feet long. The difference between #4 buck and #4 turkey load is pellet material. Lead or steel. And with the new tungsten shot, it is the best of both worlds. But the old adage says, "Run what you brung."

The pdx12 rounds were explained as one but are two separate types. 0ne is a rifled segmented 1oz slug. The other is a non-segmented rifled 1oz slug with 3x 00 buckshot on top.

Slugs are fantastic ammo! But they are so ridiculously expensive! I usually buy ammo online because I can get much better deals than at the range, or at the local store. However, the last time I was at the range, I was pricing some slugs, and they were nearly a dollar per round!

Too many people count on that and it just makes you a target. If someone is enough of a threat that you need to scare them away by racking a round it is better to already have that round in the chamber and pointed at their head with a light on the gun so when you tell them to run you don’t miss if they choose to keep coming or even worse run towards you.

I keep a mix of 9 pellet 00 buckshot and #4 buckshot loads in my house gun. It is definitely overkill for a home intruder and basically a death sentence for a torso shot at house distances. Whatever you choose, make sure it will function reliably in your gun. I’ve found some reduced recoil tactical loads that would not always cycle in my 1187 Rem semi auto.

the last shotgun ammo from fiocchi are actually great for home defense with small people and women. i fired it in my remington with a reducing recoil pad and it fired like a .22 plinker. also because of the slower velocity it doesnt destroy walls like most, just ome plaster and paint made the problem go away.... just like the 12 gauge shot.

You don't need 1600 fps or 15 pellet magnum loads with OO buck unless you're shooting from a great distance. Double ought pellets at 1100-1200 fps will punch through a human body just fine, and I would think that the added power of six more pellets or 500 extra fps of velocity would be offset by the brutal recoil. Also, pretty sure the Defender rounds are "either-or". You can get a slug that breaks into three pieces, OR a regular slug with three OO pellets.

Those Defender and similar types of rounds are for the tourists. The pellets are actually a detriment. You could push the slug much faster without them. I make them for fun, but a straight slug at full speed is far more devastating.

If I might have to fight at a distance (25-30 yards), get the 8-pellet OO buck that only spreads about half as much as most loads. And if I expect to have to hunt large quadrupeds, plain slugs would be best.

Take a cheap box of #7 or #8 etc. and make cut shells out of them. What we did growing up in the rural countryside where we didn't have much. Still the hardest hitting best performance you can get. And you can make them on the fly in the woods. Home defense? Yeah it's got you covered and then some. New to cut shells? look them up. Your welcome...

On the box, it says 1,600 feet per second muzzle velocity, but Hornady uses a 30” test barrel to get their velocity numbers. In actuality it runs just over 1,400 fps out of an 18” or 20” barrel

Birdshot isn’t tiny. Target loads are tiny. Birdshot goes all the way up to .23 caliber. #4 Buckshot is .24 caliber. There are far to many variables to say “this won’t be fatal” when taking about shot sizes. Some of the other factors are, payload, wad design and velocity. The gun itself can also have a great deal of impact of the lethality of a load. The choke, barrel length and forcing cone also effect the spread and velocity. At home defense ranges, even a target load will give you a one shot stop. Under 5 yards, out of a 28 inch barrel with a full choke. However, there are far more effective birdshot loads. An upland game plated #5 shot in a flight control wad going over 1500 ft/sec are very effective at home defense ranges

I tested my rio with that fiocchi. Also the Federal and horny Ammo. And my hunch was confirmed. And that’s Keep a box of federal flight by the bed rest or on the home gun. And Use the Fiocchi defense for target practice along with your rio. They both about the same.

Number 4 or 5 in 10 yards or less ( 30feet) is more than enough. Unless low level body armor is what they have on. But they are going to know it and fast. So use it as buttom of the line and work from there. Practice with the gun. I recommend that you load your gun have a friend stand behind you with a few cans with small rocks in them. Toss them overhead and around you from both sides and Practice hitting them. Remember a close shot is still a long shot.

#4 3" birds shot. 1 1/4 oz 1400 fps inside a home the range is close enough the pellets will not spread. One oz and a quarter at 1400 fps will definitely put somebody down even with a vest. The #4 birds shot is used on lots of game so the investigation is of a hunting shotgun. Outdoors my favorite load is 3 1/2" #4 buck. 54 22 caliber shot -- a real crowd pleaser or if used properly crowd scatterer. The shortest factory barrel is not a great deal longer than 18", again a hunting shotgun in court.

I agree birdshot is badass for home defense. It will blow limbs off for sure from close range. Birdshot is also very safe as far as not harming anyone besides your target. I think birdshot or a 9mm 124-148grain is the best bet for home defense

You can't really find it but my dad uses 0 (single - ought) buck (3 additional pellets with indiscernible loss in size) in an 870 he actually milled to extend the forcing cone to amount twice as long. The reach and grouping is only beat by slugs.
