btw if anyoen is looking to build a scaled up version of these and you're looking for those big blue barrels locally.. Go to your local carwash.. They'll give them to you free. They will probably have 10-30 empty ones just sitting there. The carwash owners were thrilled when I called them up asking if I could have them. Just wash them out REALLY good because theyre VERY soapy chemicals in them. I rinsed them out SO many times and then flushed them with Vinegar to neutralize whatever was left in there and to get rid of the car wash soap smell.

make it a 3 bucket system with two filter buckets.. in the top filter bucket add 2-3 spouts into the 2nd/middle bucket for faster flow into the middle bucket and can do the same with the middle bucket into the third and final bucket. Save yourself some money and make your own charcoal too. Use netting to separate sand from the gravel so the sand doesnt fall down into the gravel's crevices, plus it makes it easier for cleaning. I love that you used 5 gallon buckets which are readily available for just $3 at Lowes and Home Depot. So anyone can get building one of these.

At the city department I work for. We have water quality ponds that have this basic concept. The roadway water goes into one holding pond. In there is a trash rack to catch all the large material. From there it slowly releases to the sand filtration bed. That consists of 18” sand, fabric filter layer the is slowly released through a under ground piping system that discharges it back into the aquifer.

@@jgvtc559 With regards to keeping the various components separate, what would be far simpler, as well as being stronger, would be to use individual calico bags, particularly if using just the 2 bucket system. However, what would be even a better system, is to use 1 bucket/large drum (if upscaling), for each of the components, as well as 1 for the water. Especially if able to do the upscale version, I'd be inclined to set up an additional larger drum/rainwater tank, solely as an initial catchment & holding tank, with an inline tap, thus giving the water to flow through the filtration system, especially during heavy rainfall periods...less wastage of water from an overflow. Then can top it off, with a pump, to circulate the water. To take the whole project to another level, one could put a water wheel power generating system, between the top water tank, connected to a battery bank or if you are able to, space/equipment wise, one could set this power generating system aspect up, as a separate item. This way, you will be, at the very least, providing your own power, to maintain the pump. By circulating the water, maintains the life force within the water. Naturally, if you have a large enough system, you would be able to generate enough electricity to power your needs, which could enable you to be Off Grid, re power.

To be honest I really only see the filter in the video as one to use when you need to make dodgy dirty water clean enough to be safe to drink in an emergency. It is not something to use for water that comes from your household faucets where you have chemicals like fluoride. To do that, I made a second filter that I use daily. That one certainly does remove those things. But I wouldn't want to pour dirty water through that one, unlike the one in the video which you are commenting on- which is for dirty water. @Frantic6188 жыл бұрын
Ah, NO. There is a definite difference between filtering and purifying. This one doesn't do either. The poster has combined two different kinds of filters; he has the design of the slow sand filter, and the carbon part of a bio-filter (but the filtering is upside down). Also, those rocks in the bottom don't do anything. A SLOW SAND FILTER has about 5-6" of 1/2" gravel in the bottom, then another 6" of 1/4" gravel on top of that, and then a lot (at least 30") of sand that fills the rest of it. Everything is wet, and kept wet, and about 3 weeks later, a cleansing layer of bacteria has formed on the top, and this is what does all of the real work. Slow sand filters have been a reliable way of filtering and cleansing municipal water systems for nearly 200 years, and they remove 90 to 99% of the ORGANIC nasties out of the water. It's very reliable. BIO-FILTERS have sand and a charcoal on the bottom, some smallish gravel on top of that, and larger gravel on top. When "chunky" water is poured over the top, the large gravel traps the large chunks, the smaller gravel catches the smaller chunks, and the sand cleans out some of the smaller stuff, and the charcoal does some more. It cleanses the water of some things and not others. FOR MORE INFO, look up Slow Sand Filter from the CDC at www.cdc.gov/safewater/sand-filtration.html and www.nesc.wvu.edu/pdf/dw/publications/ontap/2009_tb/slow_sand_filtration_dwfsom40.pdf And this explains Carbon Filtration: What It Does, What It Doesn't www.purewaterproducts.com/articles/carbon ..... KNOW what you're doing before your life depends on it.

Thank you that as an expert as you posting your comment here. Perhaps you could share a link to a video that you have made that does a better job than what I did here in this video. Just for your information though the stones in the bottom actually do a good job of stopping the sand going into the filter. I have used this filter to turn muddy water into pretty clear water (as can be seen in this video). From there I suggest people either boil it or run it through this other filter I made in a second video. No one is going to die from drinking the water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqaogZ6PmayNjrc

Sand filters do an effective job at removing large particles and contaminants from water. However, the will not remove all contaminants from water including smaller pathogens. I'm putting in a bottle of homemade colloidal silver and let it dry. Hopefully the silver parts will stick to the gravel, the sand and the charcoal. Because they used to use silver as an antiseptic etc. Like putting in a silver coin in a bucket of milk to make it last longer and it worked. Maybe the silver parts will get flashed out over time. But you can always add in some more.

I don't see the point in having stones be part of the filtration system. Also I would think having the larger sized particles or sediement (for lack of a better word) to filter out the largest sized waste material, you would put at the top or use as the first filter. The charcoal would be the last filter located at the very bottom. Perhaps you could stretch clean cotton sheets over the top and the bottom as a pre and post filter. Also, you'll want the entire system raised up so the faucet is high enough off the ground to get a pot or a glass under it. Otherwise, great video!

Aquarium activated charcoal is fine. That is what I used in this. Barbecue charcoal is not ideal

Ok thanks man, but I don't know why the guy at the pet store said don't use it for filtering water, probably he don't know

+aminutetomidnite add coffee filters in each layer

@@Electromagic27 - Many BBQ charcoal brands add combustible additives. Beside that, it´s in no way sanitized. In the best case scenario it´s picked from the ground/pavement with a front loader. ;-) Aquarium grade work perfectly. Cheers

i don't think it's a good idea to wash your bought and bagged activated charcoal with tap water. the activated carbon will filter all the stuff like minerals etc out out of your tap water! so after the wash the charcoal lost already a good part of its filter capacity. you should only use ro or demineralized water (0 ppm) for washing the activated charcoal. i see that failure in many videos where people want to clean the charcoil and reactivate it for reusing it and wash it with tap water. just think about activated carbon tap water filters - they also need to be replaced frequently because they take up all the stuff thats in you tap water. anyway great work! simple but effective filter. i am thinking about using one like these as a prefilter so my 3 step drink water Filters dont clog that fast. should work as good as many of these small inline sediment prefilter which also need to be cleaned at least once a week..

awesome video. if I was to make this how long do u think I could store the filter without cleaning it.

+benjamin peni I can't definitively answer that question because it would depend on how dirty the water that you put through it was and how much water you put through it. But as a general guideline, a household of 5 people using 2 litres of water per day & if you have used about 1.8 kg of charcoal, the charcoal should last about 6 months before it would need to be replaced.

Does the charcoal have to be activated for this to work
@WhatHappenedIn-vt3vq Жыл бұрын
If it doesn't you'll want it activated anyways. There's food grade charcoals and once activated they'll soak up chemicals that would otherwise hurt you, like mycotoxins
@WhatHappenedIn-vt3vq Жыл бұрын
There's also none food grade charcoals, which will add stuff to the water that can kill you

Where can you get these parts (not the buckets)?
@aminutetomidnite24068 жыл бұрын
+Bonnie Roberts I guess that would depend on where you are. You should be able to get most of them from a farming supplies store or a larger hardware store. The one exception is the activated charcoal. You can get that at a pet store, or a shop that deals with fish tank supplies.

Hi Ive made the exact same filter useing the very useful info provided (thanx) my only concern is after rinsing thru around 30 times i place some cotton wool at the bottom tap , after a min or so when i look at the cotton wool its slighty discoloured, greyish im thinkin its comin from the activated charcol, now im thinking is it safe to drink, dont wanna down any carbon water, any info would be highly appreciated Thanx Iffy
@aminutetomidnite24068 жыл бұрын
+iffy07967 Really I view this as an emergency water filter when you have to deal with water that is really not very clean. After lots of rinsing I think you should end up without the residue from the carbon. But I'd boil the water before drinking. Or alternatively, the best solution would be to run your dirty water through the charcoal and sand filter I made in this video and then run it through a home made Berkey filter such as the one I made in the following video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqaogZ6PmayNjrc

+iffy07967 Granular and not pellitized carbon will be better. Also the carbon should not be applied this way.
