“When I was in the Army….” We use Vinegar to soak in our plastic Army Canteens. We let it sit overnight and dump and rinse the canteen. It eliminates the plastic taste. Same for the water bladders. The vinegar also takes out the nasty mold which grows in the water tube. All the canteens I owned, I still use the Army Issue.

This is a really good review, thank you! I love titanium! The disadvantages to all the bottles shown: - air in the bottles will allow the water to slosh and make noise thereby reducing stealth - the ridged bottles won't conform to available pack space - pack space remains the same even when the bottle is empty As for water bladders, I'm willing to endure the plastic taste and long-term risk of some sort of chemical poisoning if it means an increased chance of surviving a bad situation in the short term. I only use water in a water bladder, and I clean it out when I can with either boiling water or chemically treated water (e.g. with chlorinated water) For cooking, I prefer a two quart titanium (aluminum for cost) pot into which I stuff my sleeping gear. This results in no noise and virtually no added pack volume.

Miss Lilly, I like these type of videos and your archery ones. I carry a military canteen and metal cup,2 of them, one plastic one is steel. O haven't found another steel one at the surplus depot yet.. I also carry a sawyer mini with the backwash cleaner and a Grayl with an extra filter and coffee filters to pre-filter the water. All these are in my BOB. Which I hope I never use..I'm bugging in for as long as possible. Stay safe

The company G.A.K. makes a pot stand/stove that’s compatible with the nesting cups that fit the Nalgene bottle. There are stoves that match the U.S. military canteen cups as well. They can be found for around $15 from military surplus sellers. If you want a stainless steel lid for the real USGI canteen cup the pathfinder lid will work. I have a lot of tips for nesting bottles, cups, and stoves that Ive learned over time. If anyone is interested I could make a video expanding the topic. This video would have saved me so much money. Great content as always Lilly 👍

To relieve plastic smell and taste from bottles, I fill them with water and add some lemon or lime juice to the water. Let it sit over night and the taste will go away. If it ever comes back do it again. Leaving the lids hang loose usually keeps from coming back. I have used it on large saddle canteens for years. Learned it from an former Vietnam soldier who later back packed in the 1970s - 1990s. He was the one that suggested carrying orange chewable Vitamin C tablets to add to treated water to make the taste more palletable.

I am glad you are going over this subject! I don't plastic taste and things that hard to clean. Have never used water bladders! That titanium water bottle is nice. Stainless steel is good, and I use one daily for my water. I put ice 🧊 in it with my water and it stays cold all day and durable. I should get a cup for mine. I love the canteens, and you have mentioned them before. That cup with the canteen is nice. The plastic option seems good , however I never used before. I might have to try that titanium canteen. Makes sense boiling in the cup and then pour into the canteen. That bottle with the water filter seems to be nice and agree is convenient for emergency use. Thanks for your final recommendations at the end!! Very helpful!!

I tried water bladders and had all the same issues you had with them. Plus, I originally got them to use while snowboarding, so I didn't have to take off gloves, and rummage in a backpack to find a water bottle.This just introduced the problem of the bite valve freezing up. (you can blow your water / isotonic mix (I started using isotonic mix in a futile attempt to lower freezing point) back down the tube into the bladder once you've finished drinking, but there always seems to be just enough left in the valve to freeze, so you have to keep it in your mouth to unfreeze it before you can start drinking again. It's all just too much hassle.). I still do though have a bladder, which I use with a screw cap. I like this because it's flexible, and shrinks as it's used. On metal /Sigg type water bottles, I now always buy 1L bottles,... puritabs are dosed for 1L of water, and if you forget and drop a whole puritab into your .75L bottle, it doesn't taste very good.

Nice survey and discussion! An in-between option is also worth considering, if you're not on a limited budget -- namely, a wide-mouth titanium bottle. Keith makes a 0.9L and 1.2L version that come with an insulated cloth carry case with lightweight webbing sling. I like them because of the large capacity and the extra flexibility for use with foods or beverages. Though less stable than a canteen, they are much fatter than a typical drink bottle.

I just picked up a Sawyer water bottle with internal filter which is a Sawyer mini filter inside the bottle for $20 at Walmart. A great option for filtering water especially on the go... Whether you're traveling and you don't trust the city water or camping or for emergency use this water bottle and filter system for $20 really can't be beat. So lightweight even as a backup water filtration option can't beat $20

I have almost all of these. I have a collection of 11 nalgenes bottles and I think about 3 of other brands. I have been a prepper for 11 years. My choice and final configuration for my BOB: two nalgene oasis canteens and the steel nalgene bottle. I can carry three liters of water if needed. I live in a very hot country, in the hottest region of the country (Brazil). In addition to this I carry, intend to carry (there are legal issues involved here and I need to be careful with words) on the BOB another three nalgene bottles. Two to carry medicine and first aid kit, and the third to carry ammunition. I have the military steel canteen and don't like it, the striping on the lid is bad. I also have the Vargo BOT, but its seal is not very good. Besides both are made in steel, so heavy.

Without getting into brands, a 32 oz single-hull stainless-steal water bottle is the way to go. Plastic will melt. Aluminum will melt. Titanium will rupture at the seams. 32 oz equates exactly to three drops of iodine so there's no math. And single hull so it can be boiled. Getting into brands, my Pathfinder water bottle does all of that. I've put it in the fire and boiled water in it several times and the bottle held up. It ain't cheap but it's a first rate piece of gear.

That was a very good discussion of the pros and cons of each of those bottles and canteens. I like the weight-saving advantage of the titanium bottles and canteen. Obviously, the water source needs to be close-by, since none of the bottles or canteens holds even a single day's (normal) ration of water. I would prefer boiling "wild" water to sanitize it, as opposed to using iodine or sodium hypochlorite tablets, since boiling does not significantly alter the taste of the water. I've used iodine tablets in the wilderness before - the taste they add is not the best, but when you're really thirsty, it's easy to ignore the iodine taste and they work fast. Adding 4-8 drops of 5% unscented sodium hypochlorite (laundry bleach) per gallon of water to be disinfected does not impart much of a chemical taste to the water, especially if it is allowed to sit uncovered for a while after treatment. Unbleached paper coffee filters can be used as a pre-filter to remove silt and fine debris prior to boiling or treatment with chemicals. You have shown your water catchment system in prior videos. How would you disinfect water from your collection barrels for drinking? Cheers.

Never thought of not boiling water in the canteen because it would dirty the cup. Great advice for any of the bottles as well. my go to system is a nalgene canteen inside a canteen cup with the stove on it. I am considering upgrading to the stainless pathfinder system. I dont know what to think about the titanium stuff coming out of china, I have the same bottle you have here, the round one, from the factory the threads in the lid grind so much that they leave titanium dust in the water as your pour it out, I have polished and ground mine to the point that it stopped doing it but it took several hours of using a dremel with polishing compound. I got the bottle to test quality before getting a full titanium canteen cookset. I think a stainless usgi canteen and cup are the absolute winner for survival. Nalgene and alu cup for hiking / camping.

If you want the cheapest option then a 12 oz or 16 oz stainless steel hip flask, for alcohol, is the best. It is terrible for actually camping but as part of a survival kit it is the cheapest way to get a bottle you can boil in. If you are doing a project for a scout troop then you can get these at $3 a piece. Fill it with sugar and a water proof match on a string.

I wanted a British Crusader cup system by BCB but they are incredibly expensive new. In the end I found the Dutch version, which has slightly different dimensions, but only cost £10 for the water bottle and nested metal cup combo. I swear by it if you want a compact, light system, where you dont have to mess around with different kettles, cups, plates and pans. Just a water bottle, a metal cup, and I cook everything in the cup, and eat it with a long plastic spork. I literally pack foods based on whether I can cook them in that cup. If you take sachets of coffee with you, and you aint fussy, you dont even have to wash it up. Cook your food, rinse with a little water, make a cup of coffee, then rinse again. As long as you dont mind coffee thats slightly of spicy noodle or porridge, its the perfect low maintenance system Just dont be freaked out if the rubber washer is a weird colour. Some soldiers mix their isotonic drink sachets in the water bottle (sacrilege imhfo), so that can turn them yellow or orange.

In terms of keeping water bladders clean; cleaning tablets are available from many outdoor stores or online retailers which quickly clean any bacteria. Another easy way to keep your water bladder clean is to store it in a freezer when not in use (and empty). This prevents bacteria from growing, meaning that it stays clean.

Thru hikers use a Smart water bottle with a Sawyer filter screwed on top. Of course you can not boil water with this system and in cold weather the Sawyer filter can freeze, destroying the filter. My system is a Kleen Kanteen (1182 ml) which nests nicely in a GSI cup. The cup and bottle fit nicely in the large bottle carrier sold by Maxpedition. This can be mounted outside the backpack with MOLLE straps. Because I camp in the deserts of New Mexico I have two of these (one on each side of the backpack). I found a use for my water bladders. I use them with a Sawyer filter for a gravity system. Good video.

Q Good to know! Having gone literally through shtf.... I will tell you that NONE of Lily's recommendations actually worked!!! So what do I mean??? I have gone through severe rainstorm in 22 degrees F...and extreme heat of 120 degrees F. 😂 literally driving 🚗 from Texas to California in a matter of days. Those water bottles will experience cold water to very very hot 🔥 in the heat. And trying to cook 🍳 anything and keeping a fire 🔥 going in extreme rain 🌧 and cold 🥶 in raw elements and heavy winds was nearly impossible. You need ratings on the bottles to keep hot or cold for a good number of hours and preferably days in a real shtf that I lived through. Experience being prepped still found huge gaps. Do your diligence. Prepare accordingly. Q❤

The stainless steel canteen is a great option but one problem is with the narrow mouth if you want to boil water in the canteen cup and then transport it into the canteen it's a very narrow opening you would need a funnel..(which I do have a tiny stainless steel funnel) .. I would much prefer a wider mouth canteen for getting the water inside and for cleaning purposes.

The hose is what usually tastes plasticy. Green plastic canteens are horrible for plastic taste. Wash them enough and most of it goes away. The two stainless and titanium bottles would be my choice also. Great video! 👍

Great video! 👍I was wondering, you say you boil water in the cup and then pour it into the canteen but isn't the canteen just meant to store water for drinking and to pour into the cup for cooking? I would always go for titanium because of the weight, the durable quality and no funny tastes. But yes, that is of course a larger investment. On the other hand, seeing how many different bottles you've tried, that's been an investment too. Again, great video! Very good help for people to make the right choices.

I had a canteen once made of stainless steel with a rim around the center. I heated it and the seam split destroying it. A tip I'll give to you and all watching. Use 50 micron aquarium filter polishing pads for pre-straining water. I have a Survivor filter and cut them to fit over the intake on the filter, and they are held on by a simple hose clamp. I carry the steel Nalgene in a Wild Wolf canteen/bottle carrier with a flip top Nalgene lid on it and the other lid stored in the bottom of the carrier. There is also enough room for a cup like you show. The carrier's insulation will keep your water cool for a few hours even if locked in a hot vehicle. Thanks for the great content and advise. I've been watching you for years now and you always teach me something I didn't know.

Those 20 dollar amazon aluminum canteens have super brittle plastic caps. They tend to shatter when you need them most. I out the cap on tight and it shattered. I reconstructed the cap with JB Weld and now the cap is virtually indestructible.

A 1 litre steel bottle in the car always, at least one 500mL aluminium bottle on the rucksack, and a strong plastic bag in your back pocket. In an emergency, you might find that the plastic bag in the back pocket is the only one you will have.

Thank you, Lily. This really helped me. I was on Amazon looking at water bottles when I got the alert for your video 😂. I was looking at a few that had a bamboo top. Does that matter, and are they safe?
@tatiananaugolnykh
@tatiananaugolnykh Жыл бұрын
It depends on the grade of stainless steel and where it is made. Chinese stainless steel can have lead, I would suggest lead testing. A bamboo top and a double walled one could be a problem to use on fire. So, a single wall bottle or a canteen are better. 304 grade is the best one. Some use 18/8 - first number is chromium, second is nickel. Titanium is a heavy metal, not for long term use. Cast iron is heavier in weight but can be lead free and provides iron back to a person. Back in the days, we used 1 cast iron pot for everything and wooden cups. A lead-free cast iron item in a car is a must for me. Honestly, 1 traditional Japanese tetsubin is absolutely the best to boil water in ! It is an investment into your health ! Best Regards !
