I think I should explain the origins of this kit and put it into context, since nobody in the comments seems aware of this. I suppose you'd have to be British and of a certain age to know this. This was never issued in the British Army but put together with privately purchased items by members of 22 SAS (Special Air Service) Regiment, from the early 1970s. It became well known about in the UK in the mid 80s as it was featured in the very popular BBC series hosted by John Lofty Wiseman, ex SAS survival instructor. Even the SAS were not really well known in the UK until they stormed the Iranian Embassy to release hostages in 1981, with TV cameras filming it from outside. After the TV series Wiseman wrote the bestselling SAS Survival Handbook and outlined how to make on of these kits. This book is still available now and is considered by many to be the bible of survival. SAS soldiers were allowed to adapt their kit and add privately purchased items and also carried a slimmed down version of our webbing i.e. belt kit consisting just of ammo pouches, 1 or 2 water bottle pouches with metal canteen cup (which were not standard issue) and another adapted old-issue pouch containing a 2nd tier survival kit consisting of mess tin, signalling flares, and other items to help them survive and be rescued if they were behind enemy lines. The survival tin was a last resort kit in case they were seperated from that kit by for example being ambushed at night when asleep and could only grab their weapon and fight through or run from the ambush. The rest of us had to carry more gear on our belts, adding respirator (gas mask), boot cleaning kit, washing and shaving kit, and food and a hexamine cooker with tablets, plus a poncho, the idea being that we could operate for 24 hours in the field with that equipment, if we didn't have our Bergen (rucksack) with sleeping bag etc. in it. So the kit is very out of date as many items that we take for granted nowadays were not available in the 70s/80s, like mini water filters, or purpose made collapsible water bags, hence the purification tablets which were in every 24 hour ration pack, and the condom. The vast majority of the rest of the Army never carried anything like this. Most of us did carry tobacco tins, but with a pack of cigarettes and a lighter inside, to stop them getting wet in rain or when crawling through a stream. I do remember in the late 80s a lot of guys used to keep an old camera film pod in the field dressing pocket of the combat jacket, filled with matches. Most of my colleagues never even carried a pocket knife, I only started to do that after I had been in for a year, I bought a Victorinox German Army Knife and carried that. Nowadays I'm not a fan of survival tins like this. I actually do carry most of the items in it on a day to day basis, the purification tablets, stormproof matches, fishing kit and snare wire and other small items are inside a zipped money belt I wear, a bit like the Wazoo Cache Belt but customised and much cheaper. For pocket EDC I always have a torch/flashlight, 2 small lighters (one is a peanut lighter on my keychain), and knife and/or multitool, for example today it's a VIc Farmer together with Nextool Mini Flagship, maybe tomorrow it will be my Farmer X with Knipex Cobra XS pliers. I'd advise anyone into survival to try to incorporate survival items into their normal EDC like I do, then you don't have to think about carrying the tin and let's be real, if you're going to the shop or a restaurant you are unlikely to put a tin like this in a pocket. My 2nd tier kit is in a more modern military pouch, and instead of a mess tin I have a M1981 Swiss Army issue canteen cup stuffed with food items, plus firestarting gear. I may or my not have that with me on a daily basis, normally in a bike pannier bag even if I'm in the city, as well as a poncho. That would also be an ideal kit to put in your car as a bare bones minimum, along the lines of Survival Lilly's recent upload on the car survival tin, but to be honest I'd advise carrying more gear, not your best gear but extra clothes, cheap sleeping bag, some tinned food, bottles of water, first aid kit and so on.

Lilly, can I suggest that you take this kit for a 48 hour test, trying as much as possible to use only the items in the kit to survive,but also taking your own EDC equipment so it doesn’t become a real issue within the first hour or two. What I am saying is try to make it a real world test. Then do a follow up making and using your own kit to repeat the test as close as possible to the same conditions. This could become a series of testing other available kits to the point of failure, an important step towards making and selling such equipment yourself.

@@Cameron_F My reason for proposing a 48 hour time period was to be fair to the company that made the original kit and to Lilly as the “test subject “. Such a time scale would allow for testing all of the components for practical applications such as setting up a fish trap or fishing spear, as well as having the time to build a shelter and all of the other necessary tasks for a short duration survival situation.

This is my favorite kind of video. I have been adjusting my survival kits for many decades and I always get new ideas from looking at other people's kits. Here are my thoughts on this particular kit. I would substitute a space blanket for the condoms so you have shelter covered. I never go on a long trail run without a space blanket. I agree with you about the saw. I would substitute some paracord for the saw. 10 feet of paracord is actually 80 feet of cordage if you pull out the inner strands. Even the inner strands can be broken down further for a fine fishing line. I agree with you on the other enhancements. Great video. I would like to see more of these.

I have a little survival kit in my purse. I need to recheck the supplies in it. I also have a Swiss army knife in my purse. I got in trouble for it once taking it into a courthouse with my daughter when she was taking care of a ticket lol. I just took my purse to the car and left it there. My daughter asked me why I had that "knife". She was much younger then and knows better now. Before I started preparing 8 years ago I started making jewelry and wind chimes. You'd be surprised as to how much of the jewelry supplies are survival supplies.

I use a razor blade like that to skin a deer. It worked for every thing except cutting bone. Those blades are awesome.

Hi Lily! There's nothing wrong with the flint striker. You just have to scrape off enough of the lacquer to get to the ferrocium underneath. Ferrocium is extremely vulnerable to oxidization (which is why old lighter flints sometimes turn to dust), so they put a coat of lacquer on the rod to protect it from moisture. Those hacksaw strikers aren't fancy, but any of the edges will work for striking sparks.

I have the combat survival kit. Is a bit smaller, doesn't include flash light, condoms, razors , zip ties, signal mirror and the base for the tin can. It fits perfect in pocket. The tea light better to put it in a separate bag because with the heat melts inside the kit, specially if you store it in a car during summer. The electric tape outside of the kit can be used as a fuel to start fire and water resist the kit also. I usually use those kits as a survival core to build bigger kits.

This kind of kit is great for something one can carry almost all the time, as it fits easily into a pocket. The next step for me would be like a small day-pack for an "every day carry", which I would then also have space in my main back pack for, if I needed to be able to grab it all. I lived out of a backpack for many years and learned just how little one really needs to survive. AS I've heard it said, "The most important part of any survival kit is one's mind. If one has the knowledge and the mindset, one can survive almost anywhere.

Seams to me they call it military only for the purpose of marketing. To be honest a small amount of small plasters, no real bandages, nothing to treat bullet wounds and a lack of a real water container really make this a very basic kit for basic hikers. Because if it were a military one, it should adress better more common and possible situations in a military setting.

Survival Lily is actually one of the best outdoor related channel on YT. Unfortunately in southern Italy, where I live, is extremely rare for a lady to enjoy some wilderness time, and nowadays even men usually don't like it. It's a shame in my opinion, because outdoor activities are the best sport out there and also because we have some interesting woodland, in particular in Calabria, Basilicata and Campania regions. Your Austrian accent speaks for yourself: I really admire how Germanic people love being in the woods, and this goes for both sexes. Keep going on, we need more channels like this

Good review, Lilly and I agree with most of your assessments, especially in regards to the signal mirror. As a former aircrew member, we would carry something like this, with a space blanket, contractor grade trash bag, and our fixed blade aircrew knife in the pocket down on our calf. When you have to exit out of a downed, damaged aircraft in a hurry, you may only have what you are carrying/wearing on your body. This would give you at least something, but like you said "One is none; two is one". I would also add to my on-body carry kit a poncho in the other leg pocket with a head lamp. I had this with at all times when flying and then there were full size kits in the aircraft that were packed in backpacks. Keep up the good work. Gott Segne from the USA.

A condom in a wool hiking socks is about a l liter of water +/- that's how I always gauged it. Those are good little kits but you being survival savvy, you will find other items you'll want to add to. Good video.👍

Thanks for taking on the issue of these "SAS-style survival tins," Lilly. I've been working steadily on building a kit like this for a while, and it's surprisingly hard to do, despite how many experts recommend it, in part because they all tend to disagree on what items to put IN it! It's also somewhat hard to find some of the components, like the tobacco tins that the kits were originally meant for, and even then, it's often a tight squeeze to get everything in. So it's good to go over the nuts & bolts of what to carry and how to get it inside the tin. (You're also absolutely right that it can be advisable to buy a good, pre-made kit like this, and then upgrade it.) One thing I've observed is that it can pay to use small "combination" items (like the firesteel with a compass inside it). In my case, I got a tiny Swiss Army Knife that had a pen and a light inside it, allowing me to free up the space taken by two or more other items! It often seems that, whatever, you want to put in a kit like this, you need to scale down to a smaller version.

I've carried one of these since the 1990's. Yeah, wire saws... they just snap as soon as you start using them! I would suggest hanging on to the water purification tablets - water is too precious a resource to pass on, even with chemicals. That mirror was pretty rubbish. Agreed - the longer the length of the firesteel, the easier it is to light a bundle of tinder material. Yeah, a serrated blade is kind of a waste of time... a smooth blade will still cut cordage!!??? Serrated edges don't make good feather sticks for fire and not easy to gut with. I do like the idea of the silicon tubing as a straw - very useful for avoiding spilling water when trying to drink it and a useful first aid item. The nylon cord - nylon does not hold knots well. I'd replace that with a good bank line, or even dental floss. I really liked the fishing kit - especially the line holder (and the larger sized weights - they can be very difficult to open and close when they are smaller). I would also replace the candle with a quality waxed hemp line. Question: - Why do they always put the non-use side of the hacksaw blade as the longer side.... why not make the shorter side the blunt edge and the longer side the cutting edge???.... It just needs the angled cut across the blade to be in the opposite direction!... weird.

I think what I would want to use, instead of a candy tin would be a plumbing pipe. You could use PVC or similar and glue it together with threaded end-caps or use silicone caulk or tape dope, etc. It can be waterproof even after you open it. You can use 2" (50mm) pipe or 3" or 4" depending on what you want to pack in it. The filter would fit in easy. I think I might want to use threaded brass or copper pipe. Maybe. It would depend on the overall weight.

You have to remember that a military type kit is mean to be carried in a small space because you are carrying it in addition to your combat gear. As a civilian you don’t have that issue and can carry a set of gear meant to address your survival ie backpack with actual camping/survival gear not extra ammo and mission gear.

I will say as a civilian who survived the siege of the city with survival experience (Kyiv a year ago). When you run from your house under fire, you have NO TIME to collect or store such "good". I had an "emergency pocket" Plastic bag with the actual bare minimum. These are: documents (passport, driving license, diploma) collapsible node, medicines (specific ones were needed) a plastic bag-2-3 pieces (capacity and much more), shoelaces (a rope is also VERY much), money (hryvnias and dollars ) salt (in a plastic bag) and matches (there was both a lighter and a steel). All this was placed in the pocket of jeans or a jacket when you run under fire in a bomb shelter. We didn’t even take food all the time and we found water where we can

Actually no it's not for beginners but the opposite, it was a last ditch kit for SAS soldiers in case they got separated from their more extensive belt kit, in an ambush while they were sleeping for example. I say was as it's really outdated now and what they used to carry in the 70s and 80s before better gear was available, I doubt if any of them have carried anything like this since about 1990 lol.

Agreed, leave the "condominiums" at home. Add one or more one-liter bags (your Sawyer Squeeze was a good choice) where you can do chemical disinfection. You will now be able to kill viruses that no filter can remove. Personally, I want my kit packed in a container in which water may be pasteurized. Remember, "about three days without water, " rule of threes. Arrange your priorities for survival according to the conditions surrounding you.

Hi Lilly - the plastic tubing is primarily for use with the condom as a drinking container - you place the condom in a sock for support fill it with wtaer from a stream and put the plastic tube into the neck of the condom and sip the water - like a very low-tech camelback. You can replace it with a small section of drinking straw to acheiev the same aim

Replace the Condoms with a couple of Sealapack 1 Litre Resealable pouches. These are much more durable and have fill marks on the pouches. Get a descent knife such as a Fallkniven U2 along and/or a Swiss Army Alox Farmer Get a descent compass such as a Silva button Compass or Polymath CMP-20 Compass Replace the light with a better torch such as a Nitecore SENS mini and some spare CR2's Replace the Water purification tabs with the Katadyn Micropur Silver Ion Classic Add some Elastoplast Silver plasters, steristrips, a couple of Aspirin and Ibuprofen and a couple of Gel blister plasters Add a small reel of Kevlar thread Add some Dyneema Cordage i.e. 1.5mm If space allows a couple of boiled sweets A Mylar Poncho won't fit inside the tin but can be added to the outside of the tin with some elastic bands. I would probably replace the Ferro rod for a Fire-Maple Ferro rod as well.

Bigger container, better light, decent cordage. My concept of a survival kit includes my EDC, which includes a Leatherman Wave, but I'd leave that little knife in, because the way it is made it would be easy to take it apart and attach the blade to a stick for a spear, security component handled. Love the matches and ferro rod, throw in a small Bic lighter, just because you have room.

hey, thanks for showing. My top items are a good knive, fire and a metal pot for boiling water. The rest is bonus. The knife is way too small but better than nothing. You can boil water in the small bowl, but it is very laborious. The matches and firesteel are okay. the rest is rather 0815 but definitely better than nothing. I wouldn't buy it myself.

Most people would have a 1 liter military style water bottle on their belt and sometimes a second one in a side pocket of their backpack also a temporary shelter is easily made out of some para cord and lightweight groundsheet which you would also carry in your backpack or if you are skilled enough you can build a shelter from various bits and pieces you find laying around in your average wood

If you are going to take that can, I would recommend a metal thermos or metal can with lid. It should fit more items. Obviously, you are not going to carry that on your hands, but in a backpack or bug-out-back. I would use a larger hunting knife, maybe even a survival rifle for hunting and defense. It all depends on what reason you have to use those items in that survival kit that you are evaluating. I live in Maryland, USA, so it would be easier for me to get certain items that you may not be able to get there.I just bought a Charter Arms AR7 .22 LR caliber which fits the barrel, magazine and action inside the stock.

This is a wonderful, fun exercise. As kids, my military friend and I would compete with our can survival kits. Now, I wonder specifically what the actual application is. In the house, on standby it is a bug out bag. If camping, you already have most of the important itmes. I think the car is the likely location. If so, I think it can be larger and contain more and better items. I guess another good use for a compact version would be that it could be thrown in a daypack for dayhiking.

Hi, Lilly! I put together a kit similar to this one, but with my own choices, after watching "03 The Woodsmaster - Survival Kits [RT 1h 30m 45s]" in Ron Hood's survival series of videos. He also suggests a larger, EDC that fits in a smallish daypack or larger fanny pack, (which I also put together), as well as a larger backpack type that one can carry the above in, plus some comfort items like sleeping bags and a small tent. Not sure where to find the video series, but I do suggest the whole series for anyone who would like to learn more about (mostly) wilderness survival.

Bought a 2 pack of Sawyer Mini kits for emergencies.Wanted to try while safe at home to get a feel for use... do NOT FORGET to add the included plunger in your tin kit with your filter bc it's not worth a damn without it unfortunately. I'm using clean brook water to drink with and found it blocked up every glass or less, like entirety, not a drop came thru until you backflush with the plunger every other use or so. In a situation where you were drinking from mucky puddle or algae filled water sources, the mini will be all but useless on it's own.

Great review as always Lilly. I'm a bit surprised how few of these emergency kits come with a space blanket. I realise they take up a fair amount of space but exposure is what will end you the quickest and aside from essential fire making and water gathering/purification and signalling I would sacrifice much to include one.

The condoms ( lubricated ) can be used for burn dressings , both hands . The silicon tubing thrown out also acts as a tourniquet . Everything in the kit has more than one use . The wire saw will bag bigger game as a leg snare with paracord . You have to learn how to use the items from an expert . Compass is not good next to ferro cerium .....work that out yourself .

I had the combat version with a less nice wire saw and still cut down a tree that was 10in in diameter. You can get the ultimate version of their tin for less than £30.

I only trust the "Katadyn Micropur" Water Purification Tablets. In Austria the Brand "Katadyn Micropur" is the only Brand which is used for profesional well construction and well Renovation. Also the "Button Compass" is a little bit "funny because it is places over a Firesteel. And we all know that Metalstuff should never be near to a compass. I want more of your Videos😊 Thumbs up👍

It's not too bad for a basic kit. I would consider it to be good for 3 days or so, mostly because it contains only 3 water purification tablets. It would be time consuming to boil enough water to get by using only that tin, but it could be done. I might add a single-use packet of topical antibiotic ointment, such as Neo Sporin, and maybe some bank line or waxed nylon string for additional cordage, and a heavy-gauge sewing needle or suture kit. There is enough in that kit to survive, provided that the user has at least some basic survival knowledge and skills. Cheers.

Hi, the light was chosen to be discrete so as to not give away ones position when you are on the run, its for reading maps etc the greenberets had red lights for a time for night vision. With training the saw can be very effective. Condoms can have many uses, as containers, protect wounds etc. Have seen better versions of the kit, like your improvements, keep up the good work, lg from emmental

I enjoyed your review on this kit, a couple of things, I think you should at least try the wire saw before condemning it, I realize you had experience with them in the past and maybe they aren't the best, but they are small and fit in a kit and are better than nothing secondary cutting tool. I do believe the knife could have been a little larger considering the size of the tin can. And more useful. If they had just put a simple emergency blanket in there for shelter it would be a much more complete kit. I 100% agree that they could have done a better job with these signal mirror in that kit of course at the time that was manufactured originally maybe they didn't have a technology. Good video, keep up the good work.

A massive strike against this kit I see without even opening it is that It has a majorly recessed bottom to the tin, which both makes the kit larger than it would otherwise be and makes it less useful as a cooking device. For a toss in and forget, one piece survival kit, I would much prefer something along the lines of a proper cooking mess tin. That isn't just a container and it's big enough to contain 'real' survival items like a proper water filter and container, a proper folding knife or multitool, an actual space blanket, etc.

I agree with you on some of those items are good and others not so good and yes there was no shelter even a cheap clear or coloured plastic raincoat would be of use. I was also not keen on the wire saw as they usually break quite easily. I have seen better pocket knives and honestly one really does not need one that is serated especially that size. The cordage in this tin is not the best either in terms of length and strength I suggest swapping it for some 550 paracord. I would also add some smaller fish hooks than the ones supplied as the bigger the hook the less likely you will get a bigger fish. The mirror needs to be swapped out as it is really crap and so flimsy. One could add another sewing needle which has been magnetized I also would use some better tape like gorilla tape as opposed to the electrical tape which does not last long in the elements and loses it's stickiness. Everybody has their own personal thoughts personally I think it is better for individuals to make their own emergency tins just saying.

I still don't know why are preppers and survivalists obsessed with condoms in their survival kits. There are more useful things that they do not have in their personal survival kit. It seems to me, that it is something "freudian" 😄 For example 3 litres pvc bag is much more practical and take less space than condom. It can be used as hand/foot cover, improvised glove etc. Btw. i started work on my mid-size survival kit, where instead of tin box will be mug or flask for cooking or boiling water. But i haven't found proper mug (with lid).

In general I think I would rather make my own kit with gear I have tested and used then to trust the gear in an unopened can. As these cans typically don't have the best of gear (Sure some items are better then others) but in general you can't know for sure the quality until you need it and open it. And when you need it and open it is not the time to find the gear in the can is bad. So I think I would rather make my own kit so I know and can trust all the gear I put into it.
