Using charcoal (activated carbon) and moss ( contains iodine) these filters will also help pull heavy metal contaminants like mercury and lead from your water, it takes patience but with a large enough filter you can make water that is on par with what comes from your tap.

Honestly I think activated carbon alone might even do a good job. Its basically the same thing that's in gas masks. You dont even have to run the water through it you can just let a stick of activated carbon sit in a pitcher of water overnight and it draws out the contaminants.

Key is to filter the water at least 3 to 5 times before you get really clean water. also, Before you pour the water in the make-shift bottle, you can sieve out the larger particles and debris with a cloth (T-shirt you're wearing) and then put it in the bottle. That quickens the water purification and doesn't clog up the bottle (this filter also has a life, you will need to replace all those ingredients after a few days of use)

It looks like your filter is working good, Lilly. The reason the filtered water coming out is initially dirty is mostly from the dust/debris in the sand you used, not the dirt from the water you poured in. I used to have an aquarium for many years in which I used sand, and I had to rinse the sand over and over again, for hours, when I first set it up in order to prevent cloudy water in my tank. Of course it's a bigger problem in an aquarium because there is lots of water current stirring things up, whereas with a filter there is very little current, so that's probably why the output clears up pretty quick.

Another tool I carry is a Scotchbrite scouring pad. Among other uses it serves as a mini filter which well. Must boil though.

another good thing to do is keep some coffee filters with you and screw a piece of one into the cap so it holds back the sand and just lets the water through ... other wise you might have gritty water, and i dont know about you .... but i dont really like gritty water !!!!

This is a very interesting concept. I have run aquariums for over 40 years, and have made many, many filters with carbon and charcoal, and other media, so this was a lot of fun to watch. I know the charcoal has a limited life, so it's interesting that in the field, you can easily generate your own charcoal to rebuild your filter. Really great video!

Thanks Lilly for this very timely outdoors survival content you posted last week...i am gleaning tidbits here and there that could be useful for a post-apocalyptic adventure story where my participation is that of writer/scriptwriter, a story that has good potential of being adapted to a series for a streaming TV service such as NetFlix. BTW, the story centers on the personal growth/evolution (and perils in the journey) of a young professional woman who bugs out of a ruined capitol city, with zero bushcrafting skills, 8-9 months after a worldwide economic collapse, on her way to a rural sanctuary community deep in the country's tropical interior. This can also be done by alternating sand and charcoal layers if you don't have anything else, 3 layers of each should be good. Also keep in mind that filters of this type and what Lilly is making here are only really good for filtering water caught by rain. They will not purify water from germs and such, only clean it of dirt and debris. Still a good skill to know, Thanks for Sharing Lilly.

There are several videos available on KZbin which show how to make activated charcoal at home. It does take some time, though. Bottles are very useful items for emergency situations. I have used aluminum bottles to make decorative citronella candles for cook-outs, and have also used them during power outages.

Pops was a Cobra Gunship pilot in Nam back in the day. He trained just like all of his US army brothers with survival manuals. I read the book and it was interesting. My favorite one was the water still. If you are out in the boonies, you will need a cup, a long hose or straw, some saran wrap, a shovel, some grass or plants. Ya digs a hole in the shape of a reverse cone set the cup in the bottom, put a straw in it up to the top so you can drink. place grass and plants up high and set the saran wrap over the top. Hold it down with pepples and rocks, and put a small rock in the center so the saran wrap hangs low over the cup, thats where the water drips in the cup, and bam it heats up and drips condensation in the cup. Takes a while, but you get a cup of water and it makes water all day long...You want tips on hillbilly moonshine? LOL..Heh-heh..

Unfortunately, with this method -Without boiling.- only less bad water can be made from very bad water. However, it is perfect for cleaning it from visible dirt. After boiling for ten minutes, the microbes can be killed. To remove chemical residues and unpleasant off-flavors, add a half teaspoon of activated carbon (/2l) resting for a few hours, sometimes shaking it, the result will be perfect. So I drank some pretty poor quality water. (River Zala, River Raab) But I think the most important thing is boiling! In a survival situation, a severe diarrhea equals death.

Hi Lilly, man kann auch aus Kiefernholz und einem Schlauch einen Splintholzfilter bauen. Die Poren können auch Bakterien bis zu 100nm filtern. Problem ist der notwendige Wasserdruck der aber mittels langem Schlauch und genug Zeit auch gehen sollte. Vielleicht könnte man mit einem größeren Gefäß auch mehr Druck aufbauen.

Oder Holzart mit größeren Poren, allerdings geringerer Filterleistung.. Wäre ja vielleicht auch mit Holzgefäß machbar wenn man das dicht bekommt

Finally a good opportunity to point out not only can one bring a jar self prepped canned stews and etc., one can also can water to store up. Twenty minutes and a sealed glass can of water is a great emergency reserve. I say twenty minutes merely because that is twice the minimum health standard of eight to ten minutes of boiling any food on the stove. I am single, and have learned to can that which I do not eat, from videos. Those jars, plus water jars, can travel back and forth. If one keeps going to a place like Survival Lilly is, with these reserves, well, when dedication hits the rotary oscillator, you end up running to your refuge, perhaps even without fresh food. But having a glass canning program, including bringing back empties one at a time if you actually use them, it will not take long to build a two or three month stash of canned food and WATER, it is very surprising how quick. I make a stew, now, not on the stove in a pot. Now, I have no waste because I cook all of the stew in small jars at once. They can last twenty years if done correct. No pressure cooker needed just brains. Canning water helps on her camp, sometimes the stream may not be sufficient, or one loses their container. Lily has a great forum for ideas so I thought this might be a good video to throw this out there to all of us. Water. Can some for emergencies. Thanks for the videos Lilly.
