Hello Lars! Years ago my son and I would go winter camping in northern Wisconsin, US. We were melting snow for drinking water. There is always windblown bark and lichen in the snow. I was filtering the water through a handkerchief, I dried the wet cloth over a fire. The next time I used the cloth to filter the water tasted of smoke and was not drinkable. Temps were -27 C. Good memories.

Love ya videos bruv so much. I've used cheap store bought 20 dollar folding saws before and they worked perfectly every time. May not last as long but every now and then I replace them for another. Gets pretty cold where I am from in New York but not unsurvivable by any means. It's not unusual for me to visit my grand father a couple times through winter and spend a night out in his woods just for a good ole time. Makes me feel ten years younger every time. Like a little snap and a "I've still got it" motivation. Urban city folk I think are a little to coddled in my parts. Wouldn't last very long if they had to and I hope some of them at least find a video like this and absorb anything that could potentially save there lives or the lives of someone they care about. You just really never know when something you know might save you when you least expect. God bless you and your beautiful family.

I liked your comment on a winter survival kit. So true. A ferro rod in cold temperatures does make a lot of sense. I need to try one at high elevation, I’ve had issues with matches in the cold at elevation.
@SurvivalRussia11 ай бұрын
I they work the same at elevation. They are basically a mix of flint, magnesium and iron oxide, so they don't need oxygen and they spark at something like 2500c.

I've got a tip for you: All mammals recognize that peeing on a tree is marking territory but they also recognize that the higher up on the tree you piss, the larger the mammal and if you pee in a cup and put it as high as you can on the trees around your camp, you will keep them FAR away from you and they wont disturb your camp.
@RavenRedwood11 ай бұрын
A caveat: I once thought that 'marking my territory' would deter mountain lions, so whenever I had to go I'd walk in a circle around camp like I was making a fire barrier 😂 Turns out that just attracts them. 🙃

Hi Lars, first a Happy New Year 2024 to you and your loved ones! I must confess that I like it absolutely, finding out that you and me, that we are "on the same page" regarding skills, thoughts, gear, food etcetera. For example, I even hate it carrying a knife around my neck or throat! For me that looks like an invitation for an accident or bad luck! Bye from CE (Central Europe)!

A new SR video! Awesome! Great tips! Minus 25 celcius yikes. I think the worst I have been in in similar conditions was -23. And without a fire nearby it gets dangerous fast! Only thing I can think of to add is dont underestimate the trouble of making a fire in that cold. And also the pretty short window of daylight. And bring an extra pair of wool socks in case they get wet and cold. Starting the travel home again with new warm socks is a great morale booster! Always great too se your enthusiasm! Continued best wishes for the new year!
