The drawing he made is actually quite useful despite him saying that he might make a how-to video about this. I'd just need to know the sizes and then I can adjust ratios and whatnot. Shape is quite easy to draw.

Most excellent handcraft you have done there Lars! Your children are so very fortunate to be growing up in the countryside. Whether or not they stay in the "country" and embrace the small village lifestyle, or if they move to the city and make a life for themselves there... what you and your wife have provided them with by being out in the countryside with them, is going to provide them with life lessons that will hold them steady no matter where they go! Thank you for sharing this project with us. It is this type of content that keeps your subscriber numbers growing. In a world full of "Look at me" videos, your honest and enthusiastic approach to each challenge that country living presents too your family, and the care that you show for your friends and neighbors is very refreshing to watch. Again... Thank you for bringing us along on your adventures, and letting us peek into your daily life as well. Munro

Lars, when I was young and living "in the country", we had several Hickory trees that we used to make handles for axes, hammers, etc. After cutting, shaping, and sanding, I used pieces of broken glass to do final "sanding" before treating the handles with used motor oil. They would last forever! Excellent job making the carpenter's axe! Suoah Supah AWESOME!!! The saw you used is much like a Japanese carpentry saw. I've used those type saws in my career as a Master Craftsman Carpenter for over 35 years. They are excellent saws. The handle you made came out beautiful for just using basic tools! Supah Supah AWESOME!!!

Perhaps woodsmen of Russia used birch because the boreal forest in which they live doesn't have hardwoods such as hickory and maple growing naturally. They used what they had and made the best of it , isn't that the essence of survival? Your channel is the best Lars !

Yep I am impressed - for finishing wood for a gun stock for example I slightly wet the wood and rub with steel wool a couple of times -the water makes all the minute slivers of wood curl up and the steel wool cuts them of to give a mirror finish. Of course you might not want a mirror finish for an axe handle. For gun stocks I also water down the linseed oil with turps for the first few coatings and rub with steel wool between the coats untill all the grain is full then use pure linseed for about 10 coats and add a bit of meths and furniture polish to the mix for the last few coats -lol the whole process takes about a month and who wants to wait that long .

Hi Lars. I'm originally a carpenter by trade, but I never really owned a carpenters axe until last year when I got a Hultafors carpenters axe. I love the way it handles for bushcraft with the straight ground edge. You would never guess how big a difference it makes when you are used to a curved edge on axes. :-)

I found six old axe heads on my property in SW France , they turned up when we dug up the garden the old farmhouse is over 2 hundred years old . And the old farmer near me said they were at least from the early 1900s . The iron is incredible after a clean up and sharpen they are axes you could use as a knife almost . I only had to make handles .I wouldn’t have bought new shaft for them but anyway modern handles don’t fit these old axe shapes . You are right it looks easy to make one but you need to have the shape just so .
