I would suggest that you add a small ferro rod with striker, it's small doesn't take up a lot of room and it's very light in weight.

I have a similar EDC survival kit (5-Cs, small medical kit, pistol and spare mags) within my HPG Heavy Recon chest rig. It's a great setup along with a 100oz CamelBak Mil-Spec Antidote hydration bladder.

Speaking as a ham of many years, we like the Baofeng radios because they're throw-away cheap not because they're anything like the best. Companies like ICOM and Kenwood make the best radios, but they cost four or five times as much. For wilderness emergencies, you might look into carrying a Gamin InReach. They do two-way text via satellites and work where cellular and ham radio repeaters do not. All you need is a patch of sky overhead.

I find it funny how alot of us grunts end up rocking very similar gear. I've been using a Hill People chest rig since I was a PSG in Hawaii and still use it back in my woods. As always, good stuff brother. Keep it up.

The Baofeng UV-5R is wideband and can transmit on FRS/GMRS/MURS, VHF/UHF amateur radio bands, etc. BUT it also has spurious emissions. The newer Baofeng GT-5R can ONLY transmit on the VHF/UHF amateur radio bands as well as receive FRS/GMRS/MURS, etc. but it DOES NOT have spurious emissions. I have both which is why I carry a Yaesu FT5D w/AA battery pack. Why? The FT5D can also pickup airband as well as shortwave with a small longwire external antenna clipped on it and is more rugged and weather-resistant than the Baofeng radios. Wideband the FT5D and you can use it with FRS/GMRS/MURS freqs - not legally outside of an actual real emergency of course. Glock 19 in a Safariland ALC holster using their low-ride belt-slide adapter to keep it on my belt but out of the way of the rucksack itself without having to resort to that horridly overpriced and uncomfortable-to-me drop-leg holster system they sell. Tops BOB knife that's been modded to throw sparks off a ferro rod using the spine in a leather sheath on the other hip. 32-ounce stainless steel water bottle in it's own carrier strapped to the pack with a Sawyer filter system and purification tablets for backup and is used to re-fill the Camelbak reservoir in the ruck. You can put a stainless steel water bottle in a fire to boil water, can't do that with plastic canteens. Small flatpack stove w/alcohol stove burner for those "no campfire" areas when I need to boil water. Then the usual rapid ridgeline/tarp/mat/Helikon-Tex Swagman roll system in a buttpack on the belt for summer overnights.

I think I've got the Recon chest rig or the heavy recon chest rig, I can't remember what it's called, but I have a couple grenade pouches and a compass pouch on the front, I take it hiking and have worn it on hunts. My pistol and a fairly similar kit to what you have goes in mine. If I've got the rifle a spare magazine goes with that too. I'll have to check out that map app, I don't love the one I have.

I'm often too lazy and forget to put on sunscreen, but when I do, I'm good for one application for the day. Many folks are like you and detest it and get by with the layered approach. You know me though, short sleeves, shorts and a trucker hat and I'm good to go! The legs never get sun screen though.

I like to carry a compact hand chainsaw. It can fold up into a pouch no bigger than what you would carry handcuffs in. As well as a very robust machete with serrated edge on the back. I totally agree with the Chapstick! I like to use carmex because it has menthol in it which helps for pain relief.

I think that shirt style is a good choice for edc in warm weather based youtuber reallybigmonkey's extensive advice. I have been searching for one in my size, but cannot find. I wear long sleeve, button down, polyester outershirts with a synthetic blend t-shirt in warm weather. But they are not thick like the shirt you have on, which appears to be cotton. If i had to spend a night out in the bush, i would prefer the thicker shirt to keep the mozzy's at bay.

Hay Randall, With further regards about the 'Chap Stick' when you said "you can use it on any crack", Um can you use an antiseptic based one, for cuts and abrasions, while in the mountains? and should you either get the biggest stick size or multiples for any large cracks as well?

I just read this so please don't take it the wrong way! My question is about the issue of sweating with anything such as zinc cream applications, sunscreen as you are mentioning as well as how these can be absorbed into your blood while sweating does this apply for chap stick as well.? As I know that there some many natural ingredient ones out there that may not affect you in the long run from extended use in the wilderness?

Did I miss the important papers in your EDC? 😂 That's a great setup. Totally agree on sunscreen, but SPF Chapstick for the nose lasts for hours when necessary. Do you also throw in some sort of plastic garbage bag/reflective sheet/tarp shelter or does it not rain there much (from the looks of it, no)?

@memathews, I have done some hiking in the southwest. Sun protection is an absolute must. I always carry chapstick with an SPF rating of 25. I also wear Dr. Shade fingerless gloves. Bought mine from Cabela's. Silver in color, very lightweight, and aids in protecting the hands from the sun. Water and ice carried in a Camelbak. I carry a separate water bottle with water mixed with Gatorade Propel. Easy to wash out the water bottle. In extreme heat, will carry extra water in a Platypus soft bottle/bladder.
