📍Locations
Mt. Meakan (雌阿寒岳)
Lake Onneto (オンネトー湖)
in the Akan-Mashu National Park, Hokkaido
Mt. Me-akan is an active volcano and the tallest mountain in the Akan mountain range in Hokkaido’s first national park, Akan-Mashu National Park. The Akan volcano complex consists of 9 overlapping cones and Meakan has 3 craters at its summit. Standing at 1,499m tall, the mountain is not too challenging to climb, but as it is continuously observed for activity closed to hikers when the volcanic risk is high. The hiking trails reopened in 2009 after the volcano’s last eruption, but local authorities believe it could erupt again in the near future, so hikers must check the current warning level ⚠️ (beyond the 7th mountain station, you can no longer hear eruption warnings 😬) and sign in and out during their visit. Luckily during our Hokkaido hiking trip we were able to climb to the peak safely to see the steam rising from the crater - a must-see sight if you visit northern Japan - and to bring you along for a little guided tour!

Your easy and my easy are very different, also I always forget the times they say is usually one way in Japan. Where as trails in the UK are round trips. Also bears little chat with those women was so cute even if did mean didn't get to see it together for the first time. Proud of you two as always

If the volcano was very active, it would erupt in anytime.🌋 So lucky that both of you survived while hiking there in Hokkaido.

Thank you! We were relieved to make it down safely 😅. The volcano is constantly being monitored because the local authorities think it will erupt again soon 😬, but luckily for us the trail has been open since 2009 (after it last erupted)!

I think after a hike like that I would be in need of an onsen soak. Do country onsen allow you to sleep in the van in their parking areas overnight?

@@OshareJapan 😆👍🏻 Greetings from Norway. (Btw.. We have only one volcano in Norway and it isn’t even on the mainland. It is Mt. Beerenberg which lies on the island of Jan Mayen very far north-west. Not so far from Greenland and Svalbard. So there’s not much chance to ever go there. A close friend of mine worked on that island and he got to summit it. It is a loong march and very very hard he said.)
