Pro tip : For camping in the wind, place a large rock in each corner of the INSIDE of your tent. This will hold your tent down even in high winds. If you need to , you can remove the poles to prevent the wind from damaging your tent during the worst part of a wind storm.

I would honestly recommend upgrading your sleeping bag, tent, and other accessories first. That way you actually know what size pack to purchase. Otherwise, you'll end up upgrading your pack twice -- once to get a large enough one to hold your current gear, and again once you end up with smaller / lighter / less gear.

A BACKPACKING STORY. When I was a kid, age 11, at the local YMCA summer camp, I went to sleep one night on the edge of the pine grove we were all sleeping. I slept on the edge because the younger campers were making a lot of noise and I wanted to sleep. The edge of the pine grove, where I chose to sleep, was located on the edge of a long, long slope... it was all in a wooded area, including the pine grove. We picked that because it can be pretty comfortable sleeping on a bed of pine needles. I slept well. Then, when I woke up in the morning, the pine grove was GONE, COMPLETELY GONE. I had NO IDEA where I was not except there was no pine grove to be seen anywhere and the sun was just coming up. I wondered if the other campers had picked up very sleepy me and moved me somewhere, but there were no campers around anywhere... so, that couldn't be it. As I was wondering where I was, and wondering how I was going to find my way back to the YMCA camp, it got lighter. And, as I was looking around, I finally looked very slowly and carefully and way at the top of this very long hill, I saw what looked like it could be the TOP of some pine trees, like one might find in a pine grove. So, I, what the heck, began climbing up the long hill and, glory be (I was a dramatic kid), all the way at the top of the long hill was our camp in the pine grove, with all the other campers still sleeping. That's when learned that, if you're going to sleep on an incline, in a sleeping bag, it might just be a good idea if you tied one end of the sleeping bag to SOMETHING.

Another drawback to Dyneema tents, based on videos I’ve followed, is they have a lot more condensation than a double-wall tent. They are super light, though. Then you, too, can dance down the trail. Josh is pretty funny. Love the cooking skit. 😂

You have to remember that you were packing for not just 1 person but 3 altogether. The extra weight was from having to pack blankets for the dogs and they're food and they're sleeping mat. That all adds up.

Great hike in the Sierra: up above Bishop to Golden Trout Lake via Paiute Pass. You can either come back down the same way, or trek further north and down Pine Creek Trail to round Valley. With two vehicles, you can leave one at the end of the road up from Round Valley and drive the other to the trail head above Bishop.

Uh, I realize that you're not a hiking guru/youtube influencer, but when in bear country, avoid cooking at your campsite. You mentioned it but you didn't move off very far. Second, don't wait to set up your sleep system until you are getting into bed when it's dark and you're tired. Do it as soon as you set up your tent so you can deal with any problems while it is light and you are not dead tired.

I have a Nemo hornet 2p which weighs 2lbs 1oz it’s a good tent and I really love it. I used it on the AT last year and will be using it again this year on my second attempt. I have a Kelty 30 degree bag which keeps me plenty warm between my mid layer and my puffy. I also have a big Agnes sleeping pad which is very light, quiet and insulated.
