Snow is an excellent thermal insulator. One of the warmest, quietest nights I ever spent in a tent it snowed about a foot. Covered everything. I had to make sure the tent remained vented, but even with a bit of fresh cold air coming in, the interior of the tent warmed to 50 or 55F,, and quiet,, utter silence. Didn't even go out the next morning, took the day off and read. Let the sun burn most of it off. Second night just as warm, packed up the next day.

I got stuck in Tahoe Donner a few years back ... more than 6 feet of snow in a weekend just before Christmas. When we shoveled the driveway, we were tossing it out well over our heads. A canyon of snow. Higher than the roof of a Chevy suburban. Snow nearly covered the tops of street signs. Snow covered the windows in the house... a house that was already 3 feet or more off the ground. Beautiful to look at. But an enormous amount of work to shovel. Took more than a day for the plows to show up on our street.

Always carry a 20hp 2 stage snowblower with you with chains on its tires. Get one of those rear bumper racks. And don't forget a snowmobile too. So you will need a slightly bigger bumper rack. And at least 7 diesel heaters because, you know, more is better and stuff breaks. And plenty of frozen pizza, you can store it outside in a snow cave you dug out. And 100 gallons of extra gas for the blower and snowmobile. Get the extra extra big bumper rack. Good to go.

@@TravelersTale A big tip.... Your exhaust - at some point make a removable extension that goes up the side of the van above the roof line and the end facing down wards(stops snow blocking it) that way if you leave the van on you don't get carbon monoxide poisoning from gas building up under the van....... And simple to remove use magnet fishing magnet to hold it in place with a bit of wire or chain wrapped around it... ps put a piece of cloth between the magnet and van it stops damaging the paint.

Tip from a New Englander: Don't walk where you will need to shovel. Removing compacted snow takes a lot more energy. I guess this trip was just to attain bragging rights. Was it worth it? "Completely nuts" does kinda describe it. You weren't in danger, thanks to whatever entity plowed the road out. If the van failed or got stuck, you could hitch a ride out.
