I have some bases where I have torch spammed to such an extent that mobs don't spawn at night. Once I have a reasonably large area covered in torches I stay up at night and take note of where I see mobs spawning as I move around my base. The next day I torch up those areas. It gets to the point where it doesn't matter if it is day or night unless you plan to go somewhere on the surface.
