reversing out of a cave looks entirely different than when you come in, which is why it's so common to get lost, especially at rooms with multiple junctions. a system my siblings and I developed as we caved growing up was anytime we got to a room with multiple offshoots, we would create an arrow pointing to where we had come from, so all arrows point out. when we were very young, we would make stacks of stones with a line of stones in front of the stack to form the arrow. as we got older and had money to buy more equipment, we got reflective tape and used that to create the arrow, pinning it under the stack of stones. you gather the tape as you exit the cave, never leave anything in there. the reflective tape is extremely visible. being lost in a cave isn't fun, especially since by the time you're reversing out of it, you're already rather tired and your sense of time is actually really warped when you're in that environment, if you think you've been in a cave for 3 hours, you've probably been in there for more like five or six. it's really easy to find yourself in a situation where you are not only lost but really depleting and energy. caves of this type tend to maintain a really decent temperature while you're moving around, but when you stop and sit for 20 minutes, you get cold. on top of that, by the time you're exiting, everyone's really hungry and wanting to get back to camp. it's just a way better experience to have a system to get you out of the cave reliably.
@DrewNorthup4 күн бұрын
Looking for arrows pointing out isn't reliable, as somebody else may have left arrows pointing somewhere else in the cave. In fact, I've seen that many times. What I ALWAYS do is stop periodically and just look back the way I came. It helps my brain build a mental map of where I am, and, more importantly, it makes the way out actually feel more familiar than any other path.

Dive Talk viewer? ;) Bare in mind that cave diving isn't even close to being like regular diving, a good scuba diver would be out of their element in a cave (Note that a cave means no natural light, any natural light means it's the cavern zone, not a cave, so you have to go pretty deep usually), let alone normal caving lol, not that it's safe by any means, but it's definitely not comparable, if you get stuck in a cave that isn't filled with water you don't have a timer on your life that expires when your tank/rebreather is empty so there's a lot more time for people to help xd

Hi Magnus, I love your videos and want you to stay safe so I'm sending a YT video idea your way that doesn't involve dangerous spelunking. Idea #1: Get dressed and go to a movie audition, - audition to be a stuntman. See if you get the role. Then make a video on getting the role or being rejected. At least 2 videos will be made. Idea #2: Go meet a Hollywood stunt man ( or stunt woman) , see what he/she does, train with him/her. Essential questions: How strong do they need to be ? Can a stun man climb well? Can Magnus fall from buildings onto a giant air bag? You must set up some "risky" fear inducing takes, execute & film it like you would a short action film. (If needed go to short film festivals and watch a couple live action films for inspiration. Film your reaction to the live action films, they can be pretty weird. At the end of filming you should have at least one YT video with the stuntman and a short action film. Integrate the 2-3 minute action film into your YT video. Video will feel meta - video within a video. Keep medical staff on standby if super dangerous stunts are attempted and show them on camera so kids know you are serious about safety. And this video it would all be much safer than caving without cell service, light, and extra batteries. Bonus: if you wanted you could submit your short film to short film festivals and see if you win - thus more YT videos can be created for the future (short film submission process & outcome). Side note: please exercise caution when posting videos like this - all the small rock climbers at my gym adore you and their brains are not yet fully developed. They will copy you. P.S.Thanks for the inspiration, I started my own rock climbing related business because of you. Stay Safe & Climb on! - K

The level of underprepared-ness in this is horrifying... One small jank of either of your heads and you're finding out who wins, a Human Skull VS A Couple Million Year Old Rock (21:30 pristine example, look at that triangular rock that was right behind the head). Losing your adequate lighting (even Industrial-Grade / Military-Grade Chemiluminescent Sticks aren't considered adequate by a lot of professionals) in a cave is tantamount to death because you won't be able to see a single inch in front of your face. It's like being in the void of space, so far away from any stars that their light literally doesn't reach you. You both have never done this before so that's terrifying in and of itself due to easily made beginner mistakes that even extremely experienced cavers can make. Though beginners would be a 1000× more likely to make them. Spiders are not the biggest fear in these caves, it's fear itself, because if you panic and you are in one of these caves, that's equivalent to panicking while scuba diving. The more you panic, the more likely you're gonna make a seriously horrible mistake. Even with communicating to others before entering the cave to send cave rescue after a certain time window. In a cave like that? It could take them 1 to 4+ days to reach you and get you out depending on how deep you are, how capable the rescue team is, the state you're in (a.e. knocked out due to head injuries, broken bones, joints popped out of sockets, etc.), dehydration, how badly you're panicking, and a lot more that could make it very dangerous for them to save you and just for yourself.

It's amazing to me how terrified people are of spiders. To those who are afraid of spiders, I HIGHLY encourage you to get a pet jumping spider. You will very quickly learn how misunderstood spiders are. I used to be terrified of spiders, couldn't even kill them. So, I started exposing myself to educational videos, which lead to finding out about the hobby of spider keeping. Long story short, I am now fascinated by spiders and will try to handle any that a see in the wild. It is SO empowering to be able to go around in nature and not be afraid of "creepy crawlies", and instead find them as part of the beauty of nature.

Always bring food water and 3 lights with extra batteries when going in a cave that's 1 of the top ten rules of caving
@Mandragara4 күн бұрын
When caving you should have multiple backup light sources, ideally including a candle which you use when trying to save battery (only use torches when you need both hands free). The candle can also give you an indication of oxygen levels. "Safe" caves can still suddenly develop foul air.

I caved a lot in my 20s and 30s. I did cave rescues. I think caving is not particulary scary, if you adhere to basic protocol (helmets, lights, callouts, gloves etc.). I climb UIAA 6 lead indoors. I would never do free solo anywhere. Adrenaline was never a part of caving for me.
@frankwalker69844 күн бұрын
Magnus, don't do this stuff, man... Like other commenters said: Caves don't think twice about killing you. If you don't know where you're going and what to expect, and nobody who does is with you, then don't go in. I'm a caver with almost 20 years experience, as well as a rope access technician. Safety is ingrained in everything we do. If you did take other measures and did not show them in the video, then please don't upload these videos either. Also not with a 'don't ttry this at home' type of disclaimer. Too many people need rescue or have ther bodies recovered after going underground unaccompanied. I think caving is just the best, if you take all the right steps. There is a lot you could do to make for a much more fun, and safer experience. If anyone tries caving, ensure you have spare lights, batteries, first aid, shelters for hypothermia, as well as a guide if you've never done it. Things can go wrong SO suddenly if you aren't prepared, and without a definitive callout that knows who to contact for rescue, you can be stuck waiting for a very, very long time. There are tonnes of caves that are large and easy to traverse, that are perfect for a beginner. Even as an experienced caver, hellhole looks really demanding and committing to me. Fair play!
