Vintage Story is a game based on the Minecraft mod Terrafirmacraft, so you could probably call it a Minecraft Clone, but it's a bit more than that, in this video I'll try to survive a full year, which means making it through a freezing winter, and then do some fun story stuff on the other side.
Vintage story just had it's 1.20 update go stable (right as I was recording this actually, so the first bit of the video is on 1.19 because I had no idea), which added a load of new lore content, new enemies and also an elk mount to the game, very cool.

The game actually started as a Minecraft mod called VintageCraft, of which was heavily inspired by TerraFirmaCraft, and the modder (Tyron) went "Ya know what? Java Minecraft's engine is poorly optimized and makes modding a real headache. I'm gonna make my own Minecraft, with blackjack and hookers!" except replace blackjack with hyper-aggressive bears and replace hookers with dangerous spacetime anomalies that spawn horrors beyond our comprehension. It's very much like old, pre-Microsoft acquisition Minecraft but all grown up.

I do believe calling this a "minecraft clone" is underestimating it. The little I have seen, the game specializes so far into tech and "realistic" crafting that it's a separate experience than minecraft and minecraft clones
@HazzorPlaysGames

I was going to include it in the title but decided not to because I do agree that it undersells the game, but I mean the game is inspired by a Minecraft mod so it's also not entirely unfounded.

I also wouldn't use clone as a clone is simply a copy of an existing thing. The Dev of the minecraft mod ended up making his own game because he couldn't do what he wanted to in minecraft (to my memory) so he made this game to be true to the vision he had.

@@HazzorPlaysGames funnily enough, the devs who made vintage story was one of the original devs of the Minecraft mod, from what I heard at some point through out the development of terrafirmacraft, some of the devs eventually split into 3 parts, one stuck with the original view of the mod and added to that, another team remade the mod to be more refined and modern, and the third team wanted to get so much more out of the concept that Minecraft just couldn't yield that easily, so they made a new game from scratch with a lot of the points taken from terrafirmacraft, into that new game

Cob is used irl because it's more structurally stable than either packed dirt or plant material on their own, is a good insulator, and is also fire and termite proof. Not sure that the game replicates any of that, but it seems that they might want to at some point.

For those who might be turned off by all the heavy mouse-clicky mini-games related to knapping or forging: There's a mod called Knapster which lets you just hold down the mouse button to perform the knapping/forging/etc automatically, and you can change the difficulty such as how fast, or how much durability it takes from your tools. I love the voxel system but as an older gent who has bad carpal tunnel, I am glad to find a mod that will still let me play Vintage Story without completely destroying my wrists!

For anyone confused about the weird symbol when reading prospecting results, that is not the percent sign (%) but the permille sign. Per-cent means per-100. Per-mille means per-1000. 0.35 per mille means that for every 1000 blocks, 0.35 of them will be that block. That's why you can get things like 15 copper and not have literally one in six blocks in a chunk being copper, because it's actually one in sixty.

VS isn't that hard to learn really, all of the mechanics build on each other in a very intuitive way. And the handbook is full of info on just about anything you could want to do. There are very few things that you need to know that the game doesn't just spell out for you. Prospecting is sort of the only real example I can think of, and the wiki has a very good guide on how that works.

Cue the long list of things: - Cob is most useful if you're playing with the extended gravity effects, in which case you can't use dirt to build much at all safely. - You'll never settle down next to everything you need unless you're ludicrously lucky. Pick somewhere that looks pretty, maybe has fertile soil, and the gear spins to the right, and you're good. - Cattails don't propagate naturally, so if you cook a cattail root you've permanently reduced your access to reeds and will need to go get more. It's more a desperation food than a good source. - Using peat to preheat crucibles is in fact a smart and reasonable thing to do.

I really enjoyed this video, I'm definitely going to pick this game up, it strikes me as a game that's just as much about the journey as the destination.

Im glad to gave this video a chance, it delivered, you delivered (like always). I dont know why I doubted it but man this must’ve been tedious work to get it all done but weirdly satisfying as well I would assume. Very enjoyable

Vintage story reminds of Clanfolk, it’s just first person solo instead of overhead colony, but with more story and fighting.

I don’t know how to say this, but genuinely, I really enjoyed this video. I think this game really does need more content, but the core fundamentals make it so much fun. I think what it might be missing is a world that feels a bit more living. Just some more things to do maybe having the ability to hire villages. But that’s a big ask . Anyway, really enjoyed the video. Looking forward to more.

Heres a few starting tips for new players in a simpler to understand formate. 1. Increase copper spawns by 1-2 [this makes the solo grind less violent] 2. if your world spawned you in a bauxite biome, *restart* . copper doesnt spawn here and biomes arent 500-1000 blocks they can be 2-5 thousand so 10-15 minutes of walking every death. 3. always pick commoner (or hunter) at the start unless playing with friends. [at least until you know what your doing] none of the classes lock you out of things but certain classes will do stuff that you want better than others aka its personal preference. 4. do NOT touch any of the difficulty settings nor enable any of the gravity settings that arent already on, dirt gravity is mind numbing and if you increase difficulty without knowing what your doing or being with friends your gonna get absolutely clobbered. 5. mark any clay, tule, or ore veins you find when you stumble across them they are gonna be something you want as soon as possible. 6. Using a knife you can harvest cat tails twice the second time will give you their roots you can cook these (as well as the roots for tule) as a amazing early game food source. [i recommend not cooking tule roots however and instead planting them near your base they are your only source of thatch your gonna want them to stay around] 7. Trees will drop very little sticks when broken via their trunks first break the leaves then take the wood as leaves only drop sticks when manually broken.
