Hey Greg, Another awesome story, and can relate. Me and two other buddies went to the Porcupine Mountains, adjacent to Lake superior in MI, during a college holiday break in the spring. 4 days of backpacking, and a day in it rained for 2 days. We reached our last camp site on Lake Superior a few hours before the sun went down, (stopped raining) and set stuff out to dry n made camp. I had my tent closer to the food bags we hung. At 2 am or so, just about to hit deep sleep, I heard what you described hearing the bear going through the thick of the woods. Snap!, crack!, crack!, snap!, then moooof...... whooo... mooooof!.... whooooo! (heavy breathing). getting closer. other two during the whole bear camp visit! were too scared to attempt anything, and I was closest and shaking in my small 1 man tent. I had only a small knife and no big thing to defend myself, as the brown bear? guessing..(upper MI has brown bears mostly) ... was sniffing at my tent! I had a gernola bar wrapper in there, and luckily all other smellable... things were in my pack strung up the tree. The bear climbed enough to take our bags down, chomp away for 15 minutes with us listening only. It wandered away! a nice snack! and we came out, and looked and went back to sleep. OK, now an hour later when almost asleep, either the same bear? or another one came back! same sounds, and loud breathing.... mmm. and more snacking... then it left. the next morning we had exactly 3 tea bags period.. and a full days hike back to our car! So no sleep as you and not a thing to eat, but thankfully some tea! (I had not trained on survival as much as you! in my child hood. BUT, and awesome story and experience to make us think on the trip! Priceless as your many stories! Cheers, Ric / MN

My first solo camping trip I woke up thirsty went down to the river to fill my water bladder and my head torch wasn't seated on my head and fell right into the river. It was gone in an instant. I knew I wasn't far from camp but I was groggy and half awake. Wandered along the riverbank hoping to see something but it was so dark. Ended up spending the night leaning against a tree and almost got bit by a rattler. As soon as it gets light out I can see my camp.. no less than 50 yards away haha. I hang a chemlight in a tree over my camp ever since then.

I had one bear encounter when I was alone, which I already told you about, but I've had so many rain/downpour camping experiences that all taught me what never to be without in the bush. Lighters (several), large and small tarps (for cover and floor), cordage, bungees and stakes and, yes, a rifle, a knife, some proteins, carbs, coffee in a ziplock, and something to boil water in. My scariest moment was caused by being unprepared in a sustained heavy downpour, and I was terrified as the elements wreaked havoc on body's ability to properly function. This fireside chat hit home and I'm so glad you presented this experience and wisdom. It's so true that experience is the best teacher. Much love to you and Finn.

Love the fireside chats. Can't wait for the next one. Sounds intriguing! One of the things that I love about this channel that you don't see any where else is that Greg is the first one to admit to not always getting it right. And that's authentic. That's what real people do. Some survival guys come across as never making a wrong decision about anything. Greg's done it the hard way, got the scars to prove it but still takes the time to share his knowledge through his videos and stories. And we love him all the more for it!

Great chat. I had the Bronco figured wrong. I had one that quit on me when I hit a pot hole in the woods. After an hour or so trying to diagnose I pulled out the book to check relay and fuse locations and just happened upon the information about the emergency fuel cutt-off under the dash. Check it and sure enough the jolt had tripped it. Great story about bad times. It always pays to have a small daypack in the truck to grab on any hike, short or long. I would have been freaked out.

Greg and Finn, this one's for you. From this 71 years young, woman who still is a lifelong camper and survivor while navigating life below the poverty line. Matter of fact I am looking for land in Tennessee where I can pitch a tent and live year round. Only way today that we poor, elderly folks can get by, and it seems that even younger people are beginning to embrace this notion. Anyhow, I was 45 I took my 15 yr old son to Tennessee to get his friend for the summer, and being poor we decided to camp since we had all the gear. Upon arriving at Rock Island State park, it was somewhat desolate and remote, yet wickedly beautiful. We set up camp and picked up his friend and came back to our campsite, spending hours hiking, swimming and relaxing. I cooked dinner, and followed protocol by putting all food away in my jeep, once finished. Our tent was fairly close to the picnic table where I had stored clean pots and pans and camping equipment, and we went to bed fairly early. During the night I heard a horrible commotion and woke up the boys and told them to remain silent, grabbed my baseball bat and light. Shining the light onto the picnic table I saw eyes boldly glaring at me, ears curled at the tips, smallish body and clearly not in the mood to leave. It began growling and hissing, and I felt my pulse racing. I had never seen a bobcat before but I believed I was looking at one now . Holding the bat like a shield and keeping the boys behind me, we inched toward the jeep and upon reaching it I practically threw the kids in, then jumped in the front. I knew once the bobcat had satisfied his curiosity that he would leave, which he did. Once daylight broke I retrieved my keys and drove up to the ranger station where upon I explained to him what happened. He told me it was more than likely a bobcat and that what I did was the correct thing to do. I knew in my heart it meant us no harm and I feel fortunate to have this encounter as one of my memories. I have had several other encounters with wildlife including black bears on some of my camping excursions and safety is paramount in encountering wildlife. But I also believe that I, over the years, have been blessed by all I have experienced in 71 years of living. Greg, you are brave and gifted with many talents, and we all appreciate you and your endeavors. Stay safe, curious, adventurous, and keep on keeping it real. Peace, from Albany, Georgia, USA.
