I am actually only 18 and moving out and this is all such great advice. I was very aware of additional costs when moving out because I have watched my siblings processes of moving out but I do think that a lot of people don't understand all the deposits and things they'll have to put down. And rent isn't the only new bill that comes with moving out, you need to pay utilities and for internet and everything. Things a lot of kids don't realize that have just been paid for before. The importance of having money saved is so crucial. Do not move out because you have the exact money you need to do it! Something will go wrong and you should always have back up!

So cute! I am way past my twenties, and really had a different experience than most because I had completed university when I was twenty, was married a few weeks before turning twenty-one, and owned my own newly built home, where I still live, before I was twenty-two. I know that this is an atypical story, so it is interesting to see how most other people, including most of my friends, live. It is so foreign to me as an experience.

This video couldn't have come at a better time! I'm 21 and have just moved to London and job-wise I definitely came here with a bit of rose-tinted glasses on. I knew it wasn't going to be easy to get a job straight away but it's sad how lacking in jobs the creative (and theatre for me) industry is in terms of what I'm looking for! Not giving up though. One bit of advice I'd give is to be ballsy, don't be afraid to ask companies if they happen to have jobs available and send your CV over to them, even if they don't have anything available now they may have something come up soon and they'll already know about you. That's what I'm hoping for me anyway! Thanks for the advice ladies :)

The best advice I've ever received RE saving money/having an emergency fund is to put 10% of your wages away every time you get paid. I've always done this, I was lucky enough to be able to put a lot of my maintenance loan and grant away while I was at uni as well so that that was there to tide me over between finishing uni and getting a job. I've found that putting 10% of my wages away has helped me to save up a fairly big amount of money considering I've only been working for seven months. I've also started allotting myself a certain amount of money to spend on myself so that I can still have fun and socialise and treat myself, pay all of my bills, and have some money left over just in case, and if that money is still left over at the end of the month it goes into my savings as well. It's taken me a while to get here (the first few months I went wild because I was finally getting some money consistently) but I'm getting there!

on the money budgeting, i use an app called CoinKeeper and you can put how much money you have in your bank account and your wallet and everytime you spend money you just drag money and drop it into different sections labeled things like groceries, house, transport etc. you can budget how much you want to spend a month in each of those sections and it's really handy to keep track of where your money goes!

+Leviosa Lily It's good to begin saving up now (even if your parents claim they'll pay for it). :) No reason to panic.
@cfloster8 жыл бұрын
+Leviosa Lily actually if you start saving 400 dollars a year from ages 16-19 and put that in a retirement fund, you will have a lot of money (like 50,000 dollars) for retirement. It's never too early to start saving because compound interest is your friend.
@BrekkeEl8 жыл бұрын
I'm in the last week of my 20s and I'd add to this: start thinking about retirement now. Retirement is based on compound interest. So even if it's one a little that you can squirrel away, it's worth doing. I think these are great tips - I wished someone would have warned me about security deposits when I was 23!

If I could recommend one thing about living with roommates is to NOT text housing stuff! A lot can be miscommunicated, it can sound very passive aggressive, and then lead to bad arguments... where you get to see how you and your roommate deal with terrible blow-up arguments (I saw a side of myself I definitely did not expect!). So like Rosianna said, just talk it out, communicate!

For two years I lived with a passive aggressive housemate, and it was HORRIFIC. It's such an immature and ridiculous way to be, and I've gotten to the point where I won't be upset by it anymore. If they won't tell me what's wrong, there is NOTHING I can do to change. It will not bother me anymore. But it did take me almost three years to develop that attitude. :/ so I agree, DON'T BE PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE.

Regarding budgeting and general saving, I think people who grew up in a middle class family find it easier than people from a very well off, rich, or very low income family. Growing up you had money but still had to save to get that thing you wanted. Coming from a rich family you might not have needed to save to buy that console, for example, and on the other end of the scale you might have never had any money so now you don't know how to manage it carefully.

Watching this, I feel like I'm absolutely failing my 20s. I'm 23 and I've never had a job. It's literally one of the hardest things to do, look for work in the creative industry when you haven't gone to uni. And I'm now in a situation where I can't go because I wouldn't be able to live on the little money I'd get. Only thing I'm doing good at is living without my Dad, and that's because my housemate is my brother ha.

Beggars can't be choosers- look for *any* job. Any job will give you experience. Creative things can be done in your spare time so you don't have to just give it up, but you need to be working so you need to start looking outside of your desired field.
