agree with other comments here... great video Joel.... I used to carry a duck call with me all the time... listened to real ducks, listened to other callers in the blind... no better way to learn that to learn than to listen and practice every chance you get until you figure out how to make the same sounds that a duck makes ;) Like a musician, there's always more skills and techniques to learn... and you have to practice, practice, practice.... used to drive my mom (when I was younger), and my wife... and my kids crazy with practicing all the time... a really good time for me was in the truck, but, enclosed spaces are NOTHING like calling in the blind, or in the flooded timber.... call outside... your neighbors will love it!

Crazy that the duck hunting is so different from where I'm at (missouri) than one state to the south in Arkansas. I kinda wish we had some good flooded timber to hunt but where I'm at it's a public lake unless you wanna take a drive to go to a managed marsh

Thanks brother! I've been hunting ducks for years and have slowly perfected the art of decoy spreads and blind building but never could blow a call. I come from a family of tone-deaf non musicians and just didn't seem to have it in me. THIS VIDEO explained calling in such a simple, step by step manner that I can now FINALLY perform simple "quack" and feed calls with some level of confidence. Hi, I bought this caller (BG) to help me round up my ducks when I need to close them in for the night (2 Cayuga drakes, if that matters?) I'm trying to blow through it in short bursts and no matter how I do it all I hear is straight whistle. The flat end is the mouthpiece, correct? Am I holding it wrong? Am I supposed to cover the opening under the mouthpiece?🤔🙄🥴

Keep practicing. It’s the same technique we use when playing wind instruments and as a former teacher I can tell you it can take a long time to be able to move your tongue that fast, either the singe tut-tut-tut or the double tongue tutu-tuku-tuku. Try going slow and when you can control that, gradually work on speeding it up.

Great video! I always seem to have trouble with my calls freezing up on cold weather here in Wisconsin. I will try that tip on keeping the reed down so the spot doesn't build up.

You need to run two identical calls. One for in your pocket warming up and one to blow on. The "arkansas style" call was first patented and manufactured in pekin, illinois by a guy named PS Olt.

This is probably the best instructional video on calling I’ve ever seen. I’ve been duck hunting for years and I have friends who are excellent callers, even competition callers, but they just could never explain it in a way that was easy to translate for me. So I would say I’m an OK caller. But I’ve been trying to get my technique improved so I can be a GREAT caller. This was a great help

I like to use a gadwall call more than a mallard call. Especially if I’m in a blind with some one hammering their mallard call. I think it adds more realism and since everyone else is using a mallard call, the ducks will have confidence to fly over to me. I try to observe what everyone else is doing and try to be different. It usually works.

Thanks for the tips, Joel. I’ve been successfully blowing double read calls for several decades (actually the same call) and now trying to get better with the single reed. You made the comment about not grunting and I’ve seen that in another video by a prominent call manufacturer. I have always added a sub-vocalization, like saying “oot” or “uut”. I think there may be slight amount in yours as well. The problem is that in both your video and the other I mentioned, you guys only say don’t grunt and that one should learn to control air better but there aren’t really any details on HOW one does that better air control. So, how about some details on exactly what is meant regarding this air control?

So, I am wondering.. People learning to call these days seem different from when I learned. For instance, the quack as I learned it was "quack" or "quick" or "quit". Feeding was "dig-ga" or dug-ga". In addition, the come back and greetings ate "tiiich tick tick". What gives?

So I guess where my frustration and confusion is coming from is the grunt no grunt, voice no voice debate. 90 percent of videos I've watched say not to add voice or grunt into the call but as you pointed out at the start of your call you have a slight "throat noise" as well most other people that I've watched. I'm on board with not grunting but where my issue is what noise is at the start of your call if your not grunting or using voice? This will be my second full season and I'm by no means a good caller but I'm trying. I have my girlfriend stand across the yard and listen too me call and I go to a local pond and call at mallards and I've been successful with getting responses from birds. When I call my call gets condensation from hot air I can feel hot air exting the call so I'm confident I'm drawing air with my diaphragm but I don't have that "throat noise" am I doing something wrong or am I getting frustrated for no reason? Thanks for the content as a newbie who has never bird hunted you seem to have most insite for explaining to the inexperienced. now I'm that guy that wants his truck diagnosed over the phone lol.

There’s no debate lol. No grunt no voice. A little throat noise is ok when your blowing backwards through the call. But when you’re blowing as you should, there won’t be any noticeable voice in your call. Grunting into the call impedes the natural sound of the call and just muddies it up.

Start cheap until you get basics down. DR-85 on Amazon is a really good start. Easy to use and cheap. Sounds good too

I agree with reed down for less sticking ! In freezing cold Minnesota I’ve found that wood calls don’t freeze up as bad as acrylic in late season. Another great video !

I have such a hard time doing a “fast” feed call to mix things up. My “tikka” or “tukka” just doesn’t work fast. Lol. Any advice on how to get “faster”? Or easy way to be faster?

You may just need to take baby steps... start out doing it slow. Progress only a little faster at a time. If you start getting tongue tied, just slow down. You may try doing it for a while without the call. Then once you are able to go faster, reintroduce the call. Main thing is don't get impatient. It sometimes takes a long time. Let me know how that works for you.

Dont bother. Flying ducks do the ticka thing. On the water is different. If you hear ticka ticka its ducks asking to be called imo. They fly right over the spread and do it where I hunt. Theyre asking for instructions. The biologists say that call is used to determine spacing in the flock. Im not so sure.

how do you get the right sound though? I am sure the quality of the call matters. I am worried I am not making the correct tune/sound with my breathing, still in the early stages. Is the call the only thing that matters as far as the accuracy of the sound and everything else the skill of the caller? Like the feed call or such?

Most decent brand calls should be adequate to produce a good sound. It’s going to be mostly the caller and NOT the call, provided it’s not defective. Once you are proficient with a call, then you can choose calls based on subtle differences in tonal quality. It’s nearly impossible to do that when you are still learning to call. Patience young Padawan.
