I have hunted with Spinners in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Montana with very good success in open crop lands. My home in New Hampshire they don’t seem to help. Not one bit. I use them a little in NH every year hoping that they will make a difference but they never seem to. One anecdote for you. I had an evening in Saskatchewan that I wanted to hunt but didn’t want to set out a big spread because I was leaving early the next morning. I found a small pothole, set out 1 mojo and shot 5 ducks in 45 minutes. I absolutely believe spinners work, just not in NH for some reason.

Haha! Your first experience with spinners was exactly like mine! They were so expensive back then, I couldn't afford one so I made my own. I used my son's remote controlled car for the motor and an arrow for the wing shaft too! I was laughing so hard watching this I had tears in my eyes! Brings back good memories. Thanks for making these videos!

1998 homemade doober duck . First group of guys on public hunting area to have one! Wired through a reastat heater switch. We could control the speed and being able to turn it off was great for geese. That years hunting saying was “Turn up The Heat” !! We now put them in a group to look like a landing flock and play with the on off button!

I introduced them to northern Iowa when they first came out. The only way we could kill them in corn fields before then was to jump them or lay up wind and let them feed into you. Totally changed the game. No one believed it. Took 2-3 seasons for anyone to buy in.

Hello from New Zealand. I first purchased a Wonder Duck in the late 1990’s. On opening morning I paddled out to turn it on (no remote then) and immediately had ducks trying to land on my head. It was unbelievable. We were pulling in all the ducks on our large pond and got our limit in no time, while the guys in the other blinds got next to none. The next year the other guys all had two spinners each. The ducks seem to have wised up to spinning decoys so I now tend to use jerk rigs and other forms of water movement.

These are phenomenal videos! Thank you. I hunt in Nebraska (public land). I've always had the mentality to make my spread look different from everyone else. In the past I was not using motion decoys. Few years back I added the vibrating discs with no real improvement. Last year I replaced those with a jerk rig. Instantly I noticed ducks were landing more regularly. I still do not use the spinners, but I am seriously thinking about it this year.

We started with the styrofoam spinning kites in the early ‘90s, and killed a ton of ducks over them in the Sacramento Valleys and Delta. Then I found a “Fatal DeDUCKtion spinner that sank in a pond at a refuge and still use it sometimes. I’ve replaced the o-ring belt drive at least ten times!

I first used a spinner in probably 2002. My brother and I hunted a river and every duck we saw came straight to the spinner. Great hunt! They don’t seem to be as effective now as they were that day.

Joel, i live and hunt in northwest Indiana. The first year we saw the spinners had to be 98 or 99 because my son started to hunt with us. The first time we saw was in teal season. One blind had one spinner and limited lime in 10 min after shooting time. Let's say by 2000 you would not shoot a duck of you didn't have one. But like you said buy 2005/2006 they weren't the magic decoy. We still use them but we watch the birds of they start too flare we pull them. Also, this all took place on public land and any of the 3 public properties we hunt.

I like to use them close to the blind on bright sunny days . but cloudy days i dont use the full body spinners. I use a jerk rig ,and just a few flock of flicker to make it look like birds just hanging out .but my one exception is on busy public land .rain or shine if most of the guys i can see a running them i put them out .but then i turns into a compition of who can put the most spinners out . most me and my buddys have put is 8 full body spinners and 2 dozne flock of flickers .

I think it was 1995 or 96. There were these guys who hunted the banner marsh walk ins. They used a garden cart to haul their stuff because.of the 12 volt battery. They'd rigged up a windshield wiper motor inside a duck decoy on a pole. They also had a home made wind duck. Those two got the idea from making wind powered lawn ornaments. I'm not sure but I think they're the guys that started the whole mojo thing.. Man I was sooo jelly of how quick they limited out.

Spinner ducks have been restricted to early Dec here in ca because according to studies they draw in too many young mallards. I love to use them but it seems by the time we get used them the ducks are so used to them from other states they don't work as well. We get to use dove spinners right away for dove and they work like a charm.

great video. hope all is well. the real story of the spinning wing decoy. but before that they had a company from texas. they made a thing that would strap over a decoy and the wind would blow these paddle wheels with stickers on them and the sun would shine on them and make them flash.

When they were first introduced spinning wing decoys made a dramatic difference in duck hunting. I hunt public land and remember how the guys who first used them would set up and pull all the birds from far and wide. Now, they are used just as a regular item of duck hunting gear. Since everyone is now using them, the old tactics of good scouting, proper decoy placement, good calling and concealment factor into making the difference between a good duck hunter and a bad one. Btw does anyone have an opinion on using spinners on cloudy, overcast days? I really like these videos. I have watched a number of duck hunting videos on KZbin and these are by far some of the very best! Excellent film making and informative commentary. I can tell you know the craft. To me, what draws me to waterfowl hunting is watching the birds work, circle, cup their wings and come into the decoys. These videos capture these incredible moments. Keep making them! I am now a subscribed and in the off season I will watch. Good hunting and God bless!

First of all, thank you for the encouraging comment! It means a lot. As for cloudy days- it's tougher, in my experience, on cloudy days no matter what you do... but mojos aren't as effective for us on cloudy days as they are on sunny days.

New subscriber. I remember these days as well. I fabricated a goose shell decoy on a stake with light black fabric that would flap in the breeze back like wings in the mid to late 80’s. Friends made fun of it at first calling it super goose until they noticed how the ducks and geese tried to land on it time after time. Didn’t take me long to get a Mojo when they came out. Still have the original with bent up metal wings from years of hard use. I believe it still works to this day.

Like you said, late 90s it was nuts. I'd go set up one Mojo at any random place where the flight path allowed the ducks to see the decoy, and it was easy limits. These days I use a spinner the first week or two, then when the ducks stop responding the first change I make is pulling the spinners. If you are the only one not using spinners you are different than what they have been seeing day in and day out and I've had much better success without them especially during late season.

I shoot a lot of natural marsh here in California and I like to use 2 mojos maybe 3 at times. I typically like to obscure them a bit behind a tule patch that I’ve set up around, I don’t like the working ducks to see them constantly. I run them on intermittent cycles too. The Robo Duck was a hot item here in the late 90’s and early 2k’s too

I am still using them in South Texas but I mostly just use the teal spinners and we use them usually for the first hour of shooting light. After that we pull them and really try to create as much water motion as we can. We are using the feeder butts with jerk rigs and the splashes more than ever now. By the time the ducks make it to use they are so educated on the spinners about the only ducks that still like them are the red heads and blue bills. Puddle ducks will shy away from them big time by the end of November. Pintails want nothing to do with them by the time they make it down to us.

I've finally damaged myself with too much work so I probably won't be making it to the blind anymore and with all thsts going on in the world I'll probably do a little more fishing. But I'll say the best thing about duck hunting for me was I got to watch the birds the migration is a beautiful thing I made foam decoys for myself and used them several times and watching the birds come into your spread knowing they were wild and didn't have to was a joy that never ends. All the frustration of setting decoys the guys who's calls sounded awful the rowdy comments from others the passing and moaning, the how many you get in the parking lot. The bird that you shot that another hunter picked up. The guy who held a parking space for ransom at gun point the raining of pellets on your blind the sky buster shooting at geese in orbit and getting into a blind full of shells and beer cans someone else left and that one flock of 100 birds falling into your decoys made it all worth it.

I still use a couple Mojo's but only towards the start of the season. In Idaho the birds are mostly local birds and get educated pretty quickly. I tend to put my spinners out earlier in the morning or toward the later part of my hunt. During mid morning I pull them and run with a Jerk Cord. It adds enough motion to get them interested without flairing them 50 yards out. Spinners are so overused now adays that the only way to appear different to the ducks is to NOT have spinners.

My buddy and I where hunting public refuges back when the first Fatal De Ducktion or Mathews spinners arrived on the scene here in N CA. We saw them suck the birds away from us once. And I found them and bought two. They are still in the garage in disrepair. We always killed ducks anyways but we had to keep up with everyone else. I did not like them since it was hard to finish the ducks into the decoys. The ducks tend not to land they pause then they flair. I like to shoot ducks right as they are about to land so we can maximize our opportunities. We also bought a vortex and hauled that out to refuge hunting along with a heavy sealed battery. That thing was amazing on the refuge. We played the refuge game with the best of them until we hung it up and got back into a rice blind. We started the rice blind hunting in early 80's with the first to get water near Sutter refuge. My uncle had a field and all you needed was water! That was the magic back then. 👍👍

Obviously here in Arkansas I can’t use them on public land. But on my farm we have some flooded timber and I use them for the first couple of weeks in the spread. But the jerk rig is the way to go in many cases cause I have just grown accustomed to it. I have set them on the edges of the hole and it tends to work great.

I have had great success with the Flock of Flickers for the last 3 or 4 years. I get to hunt ND and my home state of Ohio. Teal & Mallards seem to really hone in on them!! Also, great in dove field!!!! My one very conservative buddy just laughed at me, but after 2 dove hunts in Ohio, he wanted to borrow a couple. He took them home, and the next weekend, he finally broke down and told me they mostly definitely worked. Then, in ND the same year, my son & I used them for the first 2 days. We were limited out by 9:00am both days. The same buddy and his partner took till noon both days. He finally said...... I suppose you are using those Flock of Flickers, and I said ""Yes"", Why??? He just shook his head and finally asked to use them on Day #3. All 4 of us were eating a hot breakfast at the diner by 9:30. Sold!!!!!!!

I have left mine at home the last few years. They still do the job early season on young birds that haven't seen gunning yet. I can't say they are a deal maker later in the season. Location, pressure and concealment are much greater factors. Just another piece of kit to haul around that isn't really necessary.

I had a decoy that worked on a similar principle but not quite as well long before mojos even homemade one became available. I bought it from Cabbalas. It was a super magnum water keel decoy with a motor in it that turned a shaft facing straight up and had two foam wings that were grey colored with some off-white areas attached to flat plastic pieces The plastic pieces attached to two different spots on a round plastic piece that was attached to the motor. This resulted in the plastic shafts going in and out a few inches as the wheel turned. and the tips kinda shook some too. Just like you I wasn't convinced that this worked but I quickly became convinced. I still didn't like it that much because it was kinda noisy so ducks flared in close and I liked to see the ducks land . We had a good spot and killed the limit most days anyway so I didn't use it that much. We also used pump ducks and shaker ducks and jerk cords even motorized ones and swimmers on a cable I rigged up to an electric motor kinda like the wavemaker that came along later and of course mallard machines and ice eaters. . We ran all these gizmos from golf cart batterys so we could tap for 6 or 12 volt and started a generator when we left to charge the batterys. I wish I had made some similar decoys to that one that were quieter but I didn't even though we had so many wires coming in the blind that it looked like a power substation LOL. I even had three sets of 4 switches each , one on each end of the blind and one in the middle so different hunters could operate different things and turn them on and off while ducks were working. We even had monofilament line and pulleys up into trees that we put the flying style decoys on and operated with a fishing reel. At the most opportune time would release one and then another to look like ducks coming down and landing in the hole. When we started making the spinners from dual output 12 volt windshield wiper motors the biggest difference was when we put them up in trees near the hole to get the ducks to come look then turned them off. Then later used the Vortex etc. The one thing I have not tried are the LED flasher decoys. Now, I use some splashing spinners similar to wonder ducks and shakers decoys only. Occasionally I use teal spinners early close to the water. I even carried two spinners to Canada and wire to run them from battery in the blind. We hunted in 2 provinces so we could kill more geese by hunting geese in afternoons. Our group of 6 killed 880 ducks and geese in 5 days on those hunts. That number included full 16 geese per hunter per day for 5 days of hunting and the rest were ducks ( except for maybe 25 snow geese rest of geese were darks) which we did not target. We used an outfitter to do the scouting but they did not hunt at all with us. They said we had done much better than the next highest bird group they had ever had even compared to larger groups. Now I wish the spinning wing decoys were outlawed federally . Not all motorized decoys just spinners. I have got to have some fun playing with my electronics !!! BTW I hunted a field next to Coca Cola woods in the first year we used homemade spinners . We killed 2200 ducks that year. We had the farmers son and all his friends on standby to come in and hunt around 8 o clock waiting on a call, I am talking already there and dressed we were so sure of limiting. Then if it was really hot they would call others to show up around 10 there were several weekends were we had 3 groups of hunters limit out in our pit.

We also had similar experiences at a spot we hunted on Peckerwood Lake in about 99. Just had a revolving door of people coming in and out of the duck blind, with somebody shuttling them in and out as they got their limit! CRAZY

Really enjoyed the video I'm from South Carolina, we hunt swamps rivers and lakes that are heavily hunted and I want go with out a mojo. I'm a believer in the spinning wing decoys. I just purchased some of the flocka flickers a few weeks backs and im ready to try them out. Does anyone have any experience with them

We have had good success with flocka flickers. I've used them for the past 3 years. Open them up between hunts and let the dry out really well between hunts and they will last longer.

In our area, we cant even use electric spinners til the last 2 months and the wind seems to disappear the first 2 months so wind mojo is no deal either, by the time it gets to last 2months, the birds are alrdy decoy shy and mojos will not work, most of the time anyways

You need to come to California it is one of the biggest flyways and duckhunting like you’ve never seen before. I love all your videos but a few times I’ve heard you talk bad about California we are not all bad. If you ever want to make the trip I’d be happy to have you join me

You must have me confused with someone else. I’ve never talked bad about California on my videos. I did say I’d never hunted there, but would like to some day. I have several friends who live there and waterfowl hunt there.

I'm using a Mathews Motorized Duck still. It's from the 1990's. The wings fold. Curious if there is anyone out there using a spinner that's 20+ years old and still going. I'd watched a pair of guys at Banner Marsh a few yrs earlier and decided that the first one of them spinners I see...buy it. I did. They limited in minutes... it was like you described in the video only we were shooting spoonies. Now that the public ban (Arkansas) is in place and there are guys giving up because they cant kill ducks without mojos. I'm in Illinois where the things were invented and patented so I doubt they'll ban them here. Another issue I'm interested in is the blow-back from Arkansas business over limiting me to half a duck season on public. I spend half as much there now. Has to sting.

I hunted with a guy who would put out fourteen to twenty mojo's, when we hunted together I added mine to the mix, there were times we had almost thirty mojo's out, and we killed ducks, lots of ducks on the days we managed to shoot decent

Do you think if they outlawed them for about 1 to 2 years at a time and then start back using them would it have the same affect as it did in this video. Maybe the ducks would forget about them. Then it would be another couple years of good huntin

I hunt in Southern Illinois , I sold every mojo I had and refuse to use them when I hunt at home , we kill more birds without them than with them. Now when I’m guiding in Arkansas we have to use them to show clients you are doing everything you can to get hunters their birds. If it was up to me they would be outlawed in the United States for 3 years then we would try them again
@fredclaymorgan
@fredclaymorgan 5 жыл бұрын
Similar thing happened to us in 1998. We hunt on our farm pretty hard. My dads exact words after the first morning was “ we better enjoy these because they are going to outlaw them”. I’ve never seen ducks before or after respond to anything the way they did to these. This was in Northeast La.

From the Great Northwest public Duck Blind Joel I do have some Spinners I even have one that have these feet that you had to have Wing nuts to put them on so they go back a little ways right away the pole that comes with it I saw that worthless so I put them on eight foot conduit painted black one end flattened to go in the mud now I use these when I hunted the Tidewater and it worked well as the tide came up mainly trafficking Birds now I only hunt the marsh freshwater don't even use them at all I do take them out once in awhile for the first 30 minutes I pull it don't ask why old school I guess okay that's my view on spinners and I have heard the jet airplanes from high above God bless from the northwest

They dont act like that anymore. Now when they see em they flare. Spinning wings have made birds extremely weary overall with a few exceptions.
@mattbugg4568
@mattbugg4568 3 жыл бұрын
I look at it like this the birds are there they make a look at the decoys they listen to the calls they commit to the decoys they go feet down they flair to land some land and you shoot. That way they have made 5 mistakes before you have shot at them. You get 0-5 of them and 12 fly off. However they will do the same thing next time because they think there mistake was wrong area. Or that they touched down too early or late. Where they didn't think there mistake was seeing decoys or hearing calls or going feet down or flailing it was the physical act to resting. So you or someone else has 5 more chances to fool the birds because they didn't think there first 4 actions caused the problem. Where if the birds come in and they see the decoys and you shoot thats the mistake they made and you just educated them not to come to decoys. It was only one shot and the birds are gone. When you let the birds make multiple mistakes you make better hunting. I see this all the time and think what on earth are these guys doing.

They were unfair the first few seasons. Now they are just another decoy. Sometimes they help, Sometimes not. I personally prefer not to use them they are a pain in the butt IMHO. Wish they were never invented.
Attract more ducks with your decoys.
