Ace’s confessional getting interrupted by the elephant is one of my favorite Survivor moments. For one thing, it’s a candid scene where you can even hear the cameraman exclaiming his surprise, but bigger than that, it’s a fantastic emblem for this period of Survivor as a whole. We have Ace talking about his position in the game, the immunity idol, and his alliances, suddenly interceded by nature. It’s reflective of the essence of Survivor itself as a show at this point in time. A focus on the strategy and gameplay, but just enough balance with the nature/survival/world cultures that the show found its footing and audience with at the start.
