After garland and Isabel and the pain he went through from their deaths, he decided to keep everyone at a distance, never getting too close, so when they die it won’t hurt as much. Really sad but it’s the reality in that world.hes humanity’s strongest, so he knows he’s gonna be the the one to watch everyone else die.

I never saw him as heartless.. cold, yes absolutely. But in his introduction he gives a speech to a dying soldier just to make that soldier feel a little better, that's not heartless in the slightest. We saw his heart in his very first scene. The combination of his cold demeanor but huge-ass heart is what made me like him so much. On the outside he's one of the most brutal characters there is.. but he's also one of the ones who cares the absolute most about other people. Even Hange forgets about others from time to time. The fact that he still cares so much even though he's seen so much, makes him so compelling to me.
