Packers were dirty & so were the Bears, but "Da Monsters" got away with it! When you have 8 outta 11 guys that played in the Pro-Bowl on defense & 5 more on offense, the refs tend to instead watch the other guys....ESPECIALLY ones on losing teams. These Bears went 62-17 from 1984-'88, & 52-11 from '85-'88!

In my opinion, the Bears should have won more super bowls. I think Jim McMahon should have stayed more healthy. He was injured in 1984, and 1986, They should have won those. What gets lost in this is that GB actually had a pretty talented team, especially on defense. George Cumby, Randy Scott, Brian Noble Alfonso Carreker, Ezra Johnson, were a formidable d-line. And the offense wasn’t too bad with if they had a consistent QB and running game. Lynn Dickey was done with injuries(he retired after this season), Jim Zorn was not what he used to be, and rookie Randy Wright was too small. Just couldn’t put the right pieces in place. They had good receivers, Lofton, Epps, Coffman and West.

@Chazz man well, during the 1984-1987, the Packers were one of the most penalized team in the league, the Charles Martin Body-slam, the The Blindside game of Stills and Mark Lee, but it was with Bears, so it wasn’t surprising. Watching this game again, I am tempted to rate it as the “best” regular season game for the Bears in 1985, in terms of a competitive and meaningful game. But for Zorn’s complete inability to hit an open receiver in the 4th quarter, the Bears may have lost-it was really close. Other games from 1985 ranked: 49ers=Revenge; Vikings MNF=Comeback; Cowboys=Annihilation; Tampa (both Games)=Sleep Walking through first halfs (but Wilder and Deberg gutsy performances); GB (MNF)=Fridge Hype starts; Lions (in Detroit)=Most Massive Hit on QB I have ever seen; Miami=Pride (Buddy using Marshall to cover Moore in first half) Before the Fall; Then a bunch of filler snoozer games. Also, scratching my head at the NFL schedule for the Bears in 85. They only had one division game after week 10, and had played GB both times in weeks 7 and 9. Playing almost back-to-back doesn’t provide enough time to adjust and for injuries and recovery to play out, so it’s basically the same game each time. As good as this game was, could have been even better in December, with a huge build-up.

If that fucking thug Martin hadn't assaulted McMahon the next November, the Bears would've won at least 2 of them. Then that idiot Ditka brought in Flutie instead of going with Fuller and/or Tomczak. Martin is dead now so there is some justice in the world.

1:02:44 Walter's typical yardage after contact that made him the greatest. Watch his next running play after this. Same. Listen to what Johnny Morris has to say from here to about a minute after the second running play. He's spot on about Sweetness always being "the offense" and being "the greatest." Gault had slippery hands. McKinnon, solid. Jimmy Mac, whom I adore, was injury-prone and didn't have throwing ability to match his charisma. But it's the defensive focus on Walter that made any passing game possible. Before, Jimbo, Van Horne, Hilgenberg, Bortz hit their primes, Walter had no O-line most of his career, with Suhey his best blocker as a FB. If he had such o-line help, he would have had multiple 2000-yard seasons and would have had an even longer career. He mastered making something out of nothing and taking a brutal beating. (Perfect example here at 1:57:32.) There wasn't a better all-around football player ever, IMO. 1:47:46 Another bounce off of Noble by Sweetness, who has 91 shaking his head on how to knock 34 down.

Let’s never forget Roland Harper and Robin Earl, who blocked as FBs before Matt Suhey.

For as good as the 85 Bears were, opponents were able to get to McMahon, regularly. 43 sacks on the season is a lot to give up for a run first offense

I knew Detroit RB Wilbert Montgomery and asked him once was there anyone he FEARED in his playing career? He thought for a moment and said " I don't know if I FEARED anyone but I certainly went out of my way to know where Wilbur Marshall was at all times because if a play was called to his side of the field? You just prayed someone would get to you before he did".... Now THAT'S a legacy!!

Ah, the famous Horse Manure Game. I still cannot believe that the Packers put a pile of horse poop in Ditka's locker. It only made the Bears want to kick their ass again. That rivalry never gets old even though there haven't been many instances where both teams are good at the same time.

1:25:05 - Look here and you will see a rarity. Gary Fencik got his hands on the ball carrier but did not bring him down. Fencik was one of the best tacklers in history and usually, if he could get to you, if he could get a hand on you, you went down. Give Jesse Clark credit for that.

As dirty as this game was, the seventies Raiders/Steelers was worse. George Atkinson clotheslining Lynn Swan and Mel Blount driving Cliff Branch into the ground head first was pure hatred. They also went after the knees and forearms and elbows were thrown by the dozen. The qb's as a standing target always seem to be the most often injured too.
