The imagery of this hymn is so breathtaking, that in the coldness and deadness of winter, when the earth is (in poetic vividness) symbolically harsh and hardened, this was when Jesus came. In his first coming, he was "despised and rejected of men" (Isaiah 53:3), and "his own received him not" (John 1:11), but what a contrast with his second coming! "Heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign."
