I have been doing courses from Susan Garretts online programmes, and they are amazing. I have had dogs all my life, and trained them to be great pets (German shepherds and various rescue dogs), and I loved them all but these courses have the connection between my dogs going at a whole deeper other level - just love it. Really great interview, great questions and so glad he took on the advice for his dog Molly :) xx

Hi Tim, that's an awesome interview. Great to hear someone who has a good knowledge of dog training and trainers doing an interview of this type, it allowed for some proper discussion. Congratulations.

Great podcast with lots of great real life, helpful information. As a respectful point of education however, you repeatedly used the term "negative reinforcement" incorrectly in the context of giving the dog a correction, or in punishing them . Negative reinforcement is the removal of something in the environment to REINFORCE a DESIRED behavior to make it happen again. For example, my significant other might continue to nag and nag me to take out the trash and the moment I do, she stops nagging. That would reinforce my action of taking out the trash and hopefully I do it sooner to decrease the amount of nagging i must endure. A correction such as saying "no" or as you provided the example of rubbing a dog's nose in the accident is called positive punishment. Positive punishment is the addition of a stimulus that decreases the frequency of a behavior, which is commonly referred to in dog training as giving a "correction". For example, if I left my unfolded laundry on the couch for too long my girlfriend might take it all and throw it on my closet floor as a consequence to discourage me from leaving it on the couch again...(all real life examples lol). She "added" something I found "aversive" as a consequence and I learned to not do that again because I don't like my clean laundry being thrown all over my closet floor. We always want to remember that when discussing behavior, the words positive and negative don't mean good or bad, happy or sad, they mean addition and subtraction.

I once trained my Yorkie to ring a bell when he wanted to go outside. He figured out that the bell ringing got him attention so he would ring the bell, I open the door, he would turn right around and ring the bell on the outside and come back in. He didn't have to go pee, just wanted me out of my chair and work to focus on him. The bell went away. :)

Haha. We did this as an exercise in clicker class. My big dog uses it well. He understands it and uses it correctly. My little rescue wouldn't touch the bell with any part of her body. She hated it. She seems to tell the big dog when she needs to pee and he will ring the bell so when I open the door; she will go out and he will stand next to me until she comes back in. But all the other little dogs in the class drove their owners mad by constantly ringing the bell and expecting treats so their bells are all in a cupboard somewhere LOL

Hi, Please help me. I don't have a dog but I have ferret. I trained him to hold hands, he can turn around or stand up from my orders, he also poop in the box I set in the house. I am really impressed. He is very smart and has great problem solving skills. But he doesn't seem to understand when I say yes or no. I mean I tried to reward when he fellows me so now he fellows me everywhere. I can pretty much get him to do whatever I want him to. But he still go up to my desk and eat my banana and drink my milktea when I am not looking(self-rewarding). How do I get him to know something is bad?? How to teach him when he shouldn't do something?

I cannot even punish him because he is so small. He loves when I attempt to hit him he would start dancing around from joy. He doesn't get scare when I yelled. He fall asleep when I put him in a small cage. There is nothing I can do do make him unhappy.

For training most animals teaching an alternative behaviour plus some management works well. Management would mean keeping things your ferret wants out of the way when you can't supervise or restraining your ferret with a crate or leash. Training might be to train your ferret to have a 'place' where he stays while you can't play and learning to ask you for food. I don't know if I'm allowed to share a link - if not google how to clicker train your ferret and look for Karen Prior this is the link if allowed clickertraining.com/node/839 Some of Susan Garrett's dog training would probably work well too - like the 'It's Yer Choice' game that she describes in the interview Also look on KZbin for clicker training ferrets
