Would love to see this exercise done with a dog who's never done it before. I had many things offered besides two front feet on the perch and didn't know where to go from one paw on or both paws on and lying down. And when I thought he'd finally passed the value test, as soon as I try to move him a step to the side, he just walks away. The dog in the video obviously knew to move sideways from pressure. It feels like there are some in between steps needed.

I just gave this a try with my 7 mo old GR. I used a big towel and folded it as we moved along, getting it to about a 12 square at the end. Honestly, I don’t think he ever ‘got it’ that he needed to put both his feet on the square/target. He would get both at times, most often 1 or 1.5 paws on it or he’d stop one inch in front of the square. If I stood there and waited, he would stare, maybe bark at me, lay down ending with one paw across the corner of the square. Susan’s dog was trained so she always put her paws on the target. Susan didn’t show us what to do if the dog stopped shirt or only got one paw. I decided to throw another search treat and give him the chance to come back and put both paws but it didn’t help. I also started over, opening the towel and folding it after he successfully got two paws on it. Once I fold it down to the 12” size, it seems he was maybe only lucky in stepping on it when it was bigger. Any suggestions? I wish Susan would do some of these with a dog who hasn’t learned it yet so we could see how she handles that. Thank you!

Another reason to do both sides is Rodeo Dog! Just barrels and tunnels, so kind of a mini agility, but a lot of the exercises are done with the dog on the right. Great exercise, especially for older dogs and dogs with joint issues as there isn't any jumping or possibility of falling off an obstacle. Hope that helps.

My dog LOVES target training like this! Plus she's super smart and has a good memory. I kind of forgot about our target stick training for a while and just brought it out again. She still remembers it. 💖 So far she knows how to target things with her nose and front paws. She just got introduced to spinning on the target. Looking forward to teaching her to come at my sides. I'm gonna have to use my target stick for that because it really got her confused. Just gotta figure out what to call those "commands". Since english isn't my native language. So far so good though. I'm so proud of my dog. She really is the smartest dog I've ever seen. Love her to bits. And it's amazing to see her in action, seeing her figure out different games and watching her develop. And what's so amazing about perch and target training is how tired they get. It really does take a lot of energy for them to do these exercises. Which is great. A tired dog is a happy dog. ❤

I have a 2 year old Boston that I have been doing agility training with or 1 + years. Recently she has become disinterested and distracted while training. I want this to be fun for her not stressful. She also has always pulled on a leash. I practice this perch training one time and took her for a walk and was amazed. She only extended the leash one or two times and I said closer and she corrected her behavior. We are going to take a break from agility training and work on some of the foundation stuff to reinforce our relationship then take another go at it. Thank you. Look forward to learning more from your videos

OMG thank you so much for the great demo with This! Hopefully with the foundation from Recallers games, my dog will nail it as good as This! did. Tried... he got frustrated while I waited for his hind legs to move. Will keep at it while I wait for more new tricks to learn from you... I like how you taught Mentum (I believe) to cross her front legs. Oh... and also the stretching of hind leg one at a time. Whatever you teach your dogs are soooo coool. I'm going to teach my dog the 'beg' trick to ask for more lol.

Same problem. My dog will just stand and stare at me and then jump off and get up again. Even walking right round to stand beside him just makes him look up at me. I tried using a target stick to get him to turn but he just twists his head and neck right round. Not sure how to get past this phase of waiting for his back legs to shift.

This has been really helpful, thank you. I already have quite a few “tricks” that I do with my border collie,Floss, but wanted to find some new things to broaden the scope a bit. She is 10 years old and really seems to still enjoy learning new stuff and she picks things up very quickly so hopefully not too old to learn some more. The things I find hardest of all is finding new things to teach her and then putting across to her what I want her to do. Sometimes she looks at me as if to say “ well, I can see you are trying to teach me something, but I have no idea what it is” 😂 the fault is clearly with my lack of teaching ability! I have subscribed to your channel and will be studying closely. Love the colours in your room, by the way. Many thanks from France xx

This is great! I need to definitely get my puppy to learn these pivots. He's not old enough yet to go out in public until he's had all his Parvo vaccine boosters, but I want to get him used to staying at my side rather than pulling on the leash in his excitement. He is starting to rush ahead when I take him out in my back yard to go to the bathroom. I have been doing the search game with him in my kitchen but not with a perch yet.

We actually have already do this while walking. I use “tighten up” for left side and “this side” for right. I discovered that when I sidestep my dog also sidesteps. I appreciate you reminding everyone to switch sides. I have found my dog need to practice to work both sides or it becomes very difficult for him. I like the way you had This switch sides by rotating. I’m going to introduce that to my pup. I have been asking him to go around me. My dog is 8 months old. I like to break up my loose leash walks with games. We stop & play games like tug, food toss/search, hand targets. Can you share games or behaviors that would be easy to do and make loose leash walking in the neighborhood more fun?

I’m going to do this with my girl, Fada! She’s a Kuvasz mix and could use the proprioception skills and fitness gained in these exercises. Plus she already understands paw and nose targets, I hope it makes the process easier =) I love how you broke down the steps to have the dog move da butt, she’s a big girl and tends to step backwards to move the rear legs, but w/ the small lateral steps like you did, it’ll be much clearer for her to understand.

Just tried this on my kelpie boy who's a puller and reactive walker. He did it straight away then was testing me by standing next to the blanket i waited 3 secs and then did search again with lower value treat. It worked he quickly realised if he didn't step on blanket no nom nom treats...i took him outside to play fetch after and he was dropping ball right in front were the blanket would be which is better his usual throw it vaguely at me. 😂 I really hope it helps his walkies, doing your challenge of 3-4times a day for 3mins. Crossing fingers😊

@Emma-fe6yt
@Emma-fe6yt 3 жыл бұрын
@@katsim6799 I did, and the target sticks definitely helped! Also, if you take a treat in your hand (same side as you're heeling on) and get them into a heel, hold that hand on the outside of them and pull it around their head so they have to turn their head a little bit. That swings their butt into your body so it can be in line with you, and you can reward with that treat! I did the same thing with a target stick, but found it easier to steer him with the treat since it was a more immediate reward. When using the target stick, as soon as I would click, he would start to turn to face me and break that perfect heel position.

Teach your dog the “search” cue of throwing a cookie on the floor to chase. This will get him up and moving to reset him, then pay him a higher value for paws on target as she shows would be what I would do

Thank you! I really appreciate these short training videos. I want to help my dog (and he loves training games) but I get overwhelmed. He did great with this but when the blanket was about the size of a perch, he overshot about 30% of the time. Did I make the target too small too soon? Thanks again

We're still at the beginning stages, but have found that Zoso, my 2 yr old Dobe, comes in so much faster in the morning right before breakfast because he's going to get to practice with me. Has nothing to do with his breakfast, just that I've been consistent about practicing at that time. Before starting this perch work practice time, he'd take forever to come in.

Susan you're the boss!! Since I've found your videos I'm only using your method to train my puppy. He's loving the training sessions and I'm loving how easy you make it. Thank you!!! One question, do you have a video where you show how to make them go to their beds, like yours does in this video?

Thank youuuu!!@@DogsThat I have another question. Im rehearsing this everyday. My dog will soon get it 100% (which im super grateful for!), is there a video where Susan shows how to transition from this to a lose leash walk?

Do you have a PDF of this training? I have to keep going to the video in the middle of the exercise cuz I can't remember all the steps, haha. By the way, Susan you were right about the 7 day challenge. My puppy was walking better on leash after 5 days of this training. However, we have reactivity to work on so that has not improved greatly. I am working on some other techniques for that. I finally had to see the Vet about medication to calm my Havanese down. It is a temporary fix until we can get him into a training mode for the things that he becomes anxious about.

What do you do after you dog is pivoting into heal position on your perch, do you add the verbal and then phase out the perch? Do I add a hand signal?

For the roast beef and tripe, is this something you purchased or did you make it at home and chop it to use for treats?

I would be interested in learning more about perch/pivot work. Currently struggling with getting my dog to move her but, when using the target stick and having her target towards her should she just moves her head but not her back feet or she will get off the perk completely to touch the target. Really interested in learning more about target work and targeting different parts of their (the dogs) body. Currently doing the pedicure please program in recallers and it is Amazing! Thanks in advance for more perch/pivot/target videos and any time you have for getting the but to move!

Hi Susan. I love your training. My 6 year old dog seems more focused on the reward than the actual task I am trying to teach her. How do I correct this?
