Why compare at all. Each brings their own talent, interpretation, style, artistic choice and heart to what they do. Just like any profession, everyone brings their own uniqueness to the page of music which would be nothing with out the actual live artist!!

why do people love to compare? it's so annoying, I love and enjoy Horne, DiDonato, Graham, Fleming, etc, they are all different singers, voices and persons. You don't have to "pick" one. Allow yourselves to enjoy them all in their own right.

Why would anyone compare Marilyn Horne and Susan Graham? They are completely different artists, sang completely different repertory, belong to different eras. Graham is a great interpreter of Mozart, Berlioz, French chanson, Strauss. Horne was a great exponent of bel canto and Handel. How does one make a comparison? If anything, Graham and von Stade were closer cousins, and Horne and DiDonato are closer cousins. Is it simply because they are both mezzos? Then we can say Polenzani is not Melchoir!

Good point. Maybe the only way that they would be linked or compared is that they both were closely associated with extremely talented conductors who guided and influenced the course of their vocal/musical development.

Yup. Stop comparing and stop playing favourites. We have so many great mezzos, including the great Joyce Di Donato and the up and coming Kate Lindsay. Graham is unique among the 'light' mezzos, and we love her, but she has lots of great company.

vast repertoire? the woman is singing as classic mezzo lyric her entire life... that is not vast that is actually unbelievably limited for someone with her vocal talent... probably too afraid she will lose it?
