Great lecture as always. Speaking of antibiotics... if I ever need them I always take a probiotic about 3 hours after taking an antibiotic in the hope of replenishing the "good guys" as you said. Does this practice do any good and if so, how many CFUs do you need. I usually take 5Billion CFUs. Thanks, love your lectures.. 😎

There just isn't a lot of clinical research out there yet on how effective probiotics are time-wise in conjunction with antibiotics. As far as CFU goes, what really matters is the quality of the supplement (in my opinion). If they say "10 billion" but only 1 billion are alive, then the supplement isn't much good. 5 billion live seems like it would be a good start. There is some reasonable clinical data that the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii may be able to inhibit overgrowth of Clostridium dificile during antibiotic use. That said, some people are so immunocompromised that they can even get sick from the supplement, so people really have to do their research to find what they are comfortable with trying. I believe that taking prebiotics is equally important - a supplement like Heather's Tummy Fiber is one I love. There are some good studies with ICU patients that were given prebiotics and they had a significantly lower rate of developing C. dif. Just some various thoughts on this topic - it is a rich topic for clinical research with lots of areas of unknowns and controversies, at this point.

susannaheinze Thanks so much for your reply! I do my best to maintain good gut-health, it’s so hard to find products that do what they say they do, lol. I’ll look into the one you mentioned. I keep telling people that knowledge is power. if you take your health casually, you’ll wind up a casualty. Thanks again for all your great work!
