On January 28, 2024, at approximately 12:17 pm, I, Trooper J. Peters (1477) was conducting speed enforcement on State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd) at the intersection with Braewood Street in Brooksville when I observed a grey 2022 Dodge Challenger bearing Florida License plate JJYT50 (suspect vehicle), traveling east in the outside lane at a high rate of speed. I visually estimated the speed of the approaching vehicle to be approximately 75 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. I observed my assigned Stalker Dual Radar, rear antenna Target speed display of 77 mph with a continuous audio Doppler tone consistent with the approaching vehicle's speed. I overtook the suspect vehicle, activated my emergency lights, and conducted a traffic stop on the grey 2022 Dodge Challenger at the median break between the east and westbound lanes of State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd) adjacent to Lockhart Road.
Prior to approaching the suspect vehicle, I conducted an FCIC/NCIC query of the attached Florida License plate, which returned PV Holdings as the registered owner. I also noted the "PM" registration decal consistent with a rental vehicle. Upon closer observation, I noted that the rear window was dark tinted externally, as well as the door windows having extremely dark tint. Using my patrol vehicle's Public Address system, I verbally instructed the driver to lower his door window, turn the vehicle off, and place the keys on the roof. At this time, the suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed westbound on State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd).
A vehicle pursuit ensued from the initial stop location westbound on State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd) as the suspect vehicle continued in a reckless manner at high speeds, demonstrating a wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property for approximately 7 miles to the area in front of Everglades Equipment at 22255 Cortez Blvd. An unsuccessful Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) attempt was executed by Trooper B. Hoagland (610) that redirected the suspect vehicle westbound on State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd). The vehicle pursuit continued east for approximately 4 miles until the suspect driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle, resulting in a vehicle crash at the southeast corner of State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd) and County Road 541 (Spring Lake Hwy), and a secondary crash involving another motorist as the suspect vehicle crossed over the raised curb/grass median north of the initial area of collision.
Upon making contact and subsequent arrest, the driver was identified by his Social Security Number and Florida Identification Card (J-525-063-95-102-0) via a DAVID query, identifying him as Brandon Corey Johnson (DOB: 03/22/1995). The suspect was identified as having never possessed or been issued a valid driver's license.
Three other occupants were identified as passengers in the vehicle, including 2 minor children (a 10-year-old white male and a 15-year-old white male). The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified, responded to the scene, and initiated an investigation regarding charges for Child Abuse without Great Bodily Harm.
Upon querying FCIC/NCIC, a hit response returned for a Violation of Probation Warrant (Battery) in Hernando County.
A search of the suspect vehicle incident to arrest discovered the following controlled substances:
- 7 grams of Cocaine wrapped in a One Dollar bill located on the driver's floor
- A clear plastic bag containing 9.9 grams of Cocaine, another clear plastic bag containing 2.2 grams of Cocaine located in the "DABTIS" backpack in the trunk
- A clear plastic bag containing 9.9 grams of Marijuana located on the driver's floor
- A clear plastic bag containing 3.2 grams of Marijuana and a digital scale with green leafy residue labeled "Cookies"
A hit confirmation for the warrant was received from TBRCC at approximately 1:26 pm. At approximately 2:17 pm, the defendant was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center and booked without incident.
