The Goblin music was composed before they started filming and was played on set very loudly to help the actors.

The opening scene where Suzy is walking through the airport is proof enough of the film's masterful vision. The wind, the rain, the sliding doors, her eyes lit up by sense of foreboding! As good as it is...Argento's 'Inferno' is probably even better. Every scene has its own jewel-like elegance.

Great review!! I hold this movie in high regard especially as far as horror movies go. When mentioning this to other people, I describe it as “The most beautiful nightmare you’ll see”. It’s visually stunning (wish they’d remaster this in HDR) yet completely unrealistic but still genuinely creepy and scary just like nightmares I’ve had. You get that same frightened and confused feeling after it’s over.

I watched this movie few months ago and for me was like a nightmare with vivid colors and disturbing music. It is the kind of film that deserves to watch again and again because is very hypnotic.

Amazingly intuitive and insightful analysis of one of my favorite horror movies. I had never considered how the bad dubbing adds to the general over-all feeling and mood, creating an uncomfortable, unreal, almost dream-like quality to the film. Great critique, I greatly enjoyed it 👍

A newly restored Blu-ray of Suspiria is in the works, and the company that is making the disc, Synapse, has released screenshots of the disc, showing much improved picture compared to older discs: synapse-films.com/news/suspiria-comparison-pictures/ The new Blu-ray is scheduled for 2017 release, but it could be delayed till next year if more work is needed.

Fun fact: All the ballerina characters come off almost like children, because originally they were supposed to be children. Argento couldn't finance a movie where little girls are being slaughtered, so he changed the characters to young adults, but didn't change the dialogue at all.

As I commented earlier, a newly restored Blu-ray is coming out this year. The maker of the disc is now taking pre-orders: synapse-films.com/dvds/suspiria-40th-anniversary-limited-edition-steelbook/ . It will be shipped out Nov or Dec. It is a 2-disc Blu-ray and a CD soundtrack. It is limited to 6000 copies and it costs $49.95. Currently this is the only way to order this.

Mario Bava is my favourite movie director. Rabid dogs is my favoruite non-horror movie from him. Black Sunday is realy great movie, great atmosphere, brutal opening, but i more like Bava's colorful movies because of his way of using colors, like Black sabbath (italian version), the whip and the body, lisa and the devil, operazione paura. A bay of blood, blood and black lace and hatchet for the honeymoon are one of the best giallo movies. I don't like his comedies and spaghetti westerns. Sorry if my English is bad.

Argento and all the big names of the italian "Giallo" showed us that movies can be cheese or even ridiculous but also tell us something. There is a whole world under the surface of every giallo movie. Good review Maggie. Greatest mindfuck ever made. Oh, if you think you've meditated before, read anything by Helen Keller, literally a woman who walked in a void her whole life being blind and deaf. Never hearing people, never seeing them; her only verification of reality was through 'touch'. Think of the endless hours she was 'forced' to meditate in this void, having nothing else to do. More hermit-like than a monk in a cave for 20 years. Now that's true introspection. And her writing was that of a silver-tongued wordsmith.

There are some mistakes in the movie but I overlook them because the overall piece is excellent. I'm not sure there are much hidden elements, you have to take it as an artist's odyssey and appreciate the overall feel. I felt like I was in a real witch world and the climax was top notch.

Just finished watching and reviewing this movie for our show. I was rather bored by the film as a whole while my co-host said he often felt bored and amazed. I agree with the Alice in Wonderland feeling to it. It's very dreamlike/nightmare-like and that, I guess, is the "scary" part of the film. I liked the music in the beginning, but after hearing it for the umpteenth time 30 minutes in, I got tired of it. It's the first film we've reviewed where we had different views in the end.

You can start with his 1970 directorial debut "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage," which is a landmark Italian giallo. A new restored Blu-ray came out only 2 months ago but it's already out of print, showing how sought after this film is. You'll have settle for cheaper DVD or BD with lesser picture quality. Argento's follow-up films are also noteworthy: "Cat o' Nine Tails" and "Four Flies on Grey Velvet." My favorite of his films is "Deep Red," made right before "Suspiria."

@92ninersboy7 жыл бұрын
Great review, Maggie, probably my favorite of this film. I think you nailed what makes this strange, beautiful movie work. You've got to give yourself over to Argento's sensibility. I don't feel his symbols are, for the most part, all that consciously planned; it feels to me more like an artist pursuing his aesthetic longings through images, which are so strong they can't help but reveal something about their creator (and the audience). Guillermo del Toro said that as far as what Argento is trying to say in his films, "it's more something between him and his psychiatrist" - I took that as meaning it's not so much about trying to communicate a specific message to an audience - it's more personally cathartic. Yes, the acting is VERY cheesy, which has always been a problem for me with Argento. In Cronenberg's early films there was a lot of bad acting, but unlike Argento, he went on to attract some of the best actors ever, and direct them in some of their greatest performances. True, this movie has a lot of flaws, but its unique and a wonderful cinematic ride. "Opera" and "Deep Red" are also among my Argento favorites.

Very cool review. The soundtrack was intrusive and hella unsettling - i think it did exactly what it set out to do, lol. Also LOVED the explosive ending, poor Suzie was put in far more actual peril than most action stars are, these days. Can't make good art without a dash of danger! If i had but one criticism, it'd be the reveal of the coven of witches. The terror came from the unseen, unknowable threats, and once the movie gave a face to the danger, the movie lost much of its edge. Fabulous movie over all, though.

It certainly has atmosphere, unlike modern films, most of which have no atmosphere. Most cinematographers don't know how to create expressionistic lighting, and this seems to be partly due to the lack of interest in older films, along with the fact that proper cinematography is not being taught.

i recently learned that the acting is bad because originally the characters were written as 11-13 yo young girls, but the movie was too violent so they couldn't cast actors that young. So instead, as a compromise, they asked the actresses to act in a very childlike way.
