@@tauncfester3022 its not at all a "b" but an eszett which replaces the double ss sound in German :)
@TJJewett7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I love that he tries to explain the German origin, but completely messes it up. I nearly had a coronary when he said the eszett makes the Z sound... dude, no. in German, the S makes the z sound and the eszett makes the hard hissing "S" sound. I shouldn't freak out over it but it is like nails on a chalkboard for me.
@denisesanders39835 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Great video! Markus is right it does translate to Freshwater Seaweed (or kelp). "Suss" actually means sweet. In german when you say "sweet water" it means that the water is unsalted or "fresh water" in English. Kind of like we have salted butter and we call unsalted butter "sweet" butter. It isn't actually sweet it is just not salted. The word "wasser" means water and "tang" is seaweed or kelp. I don't know why they still use the Eszett-I mean I know it tells you which sound to make but it just seems outdated and creates confusion for people trying to learn German! Ok-now I'm going to "sew" my Susswassertang into long kelp ropes!! Thanks for the great idea!!

+Bradley Vaughn, when you say that, it means the world to me. You made my month! Im just passing on what im passionate about and trying to learn the new and quirky connections that occur when natural history and human history intersect. Every view, subscriber and like, means a lot to me. Im learning how to work KZbin as I go, but the channel is only 2 months old, and im trying to build a community as well. Also i want to keep this channel ad free unless it's for relevant products and responsible/quality companies. But until I get to 1000 followers I can't control that too much with KZbin's new policies. In the end my patreon page is how I hope to fund the hours of research and care of my animals. My first purchase with 30 dollars on patreon was a tripod haha. So if I earn it, in the future, I value a dollar or two patreon supporters immensely as well. I make my living jumping from art gig to graphic design gig and the last 2 months it's been slow, so i decided to put my heart into pumping out content. So again, Thank you, im never hoping to get rich or live off anything like this, but sustaining my animals and actually engaging with people and entertaining them while sharing my learning process is the goal

Sußwassertang - pronounced Soos Vasser Tang. Translated from German to English: sweet water seaweed. the funny looking B is a double S "SS" in German. the U in SuB has an umlout which gives the U a OO sound. W has a V sound. Is it known where it derives from? Java fern makes spores and clones of itself. Double SS not a Z, as a Z in German is pronounces TZ like blitz, not the English Z as in Zebra

Susswasertang is neat. A fern perpetually stuck in the Gametophyte/prothallium stage but never develops further and continues to grow and replicate staying as a Gametophyte. I wonder if the genetic variation comes from exposure to genetic information of other related fern prothallium sex organs. I'd imagine that's what those 'spore' spots are supposed to be, and they might allow for genetic 'mixing' under the right conditions.

welcome and thanks for being active in seeking knowledge... yes, it is a wandering jew heh.. (I'm Jewish so it amused me) ... I've gotten them to grow in the hang off the backs...they simply remove nitrates and ammonia, but are not aquatic plants so I just do it to give them a nutrient boost and level off my tanks parameters. almost any plants that have running roots will do this just fine...just be aware that they can grow into sponges and filters over time and clog thrm in like 6 months

Well it was confirmed dna to be a fern ... gamophyte but other than that and it not having a gene to age it's tissues they're still studying it

I’ve been looking at pictures of it, and it’s really hard to find any that doesn’t have Java moss in it already. I was kind of hoping to avoid Java moss in my next tank.
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
yeah java moss gets everywhere since it uses spores and a single cell can turn into a clump...I've totally drained a tank, changed the substrate and put no mosses in it, and 5 months later the rocks and sticks have moss growing.

I had no luck with subwassertang!€

Maybe your water is too hard?
@sharronmiller4513 жыл бұрын
No, I have soft water. It just floats around in separate strands and then dies! Help! I would love to make it work.

Love this plant but grows very slowly for me.
@Fishtory2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are several kinds and some are really slow....some like nitrates and others don't handle it well even under 50 ppm or so.
@sphinxwidget5 жыл бұрын
so im confused. one minute ur talking about pH saying that it can handle 7 or 8 pH then u follow up with "thats like brackish". doesnt brackish have to do with salinity? at least thats what i was told. and if i remember correctly salinity can affect the pH but not pH affecting salinity.
@Fishtory5 жыл бұрын
yes Brackish is about salinity. Salinity will increase tds and generaly also increase ph. And you are correct that ph change wont change salinity (you could be dumping battery acid in some ocean water and the ph would go nuts but salinity could remain near the same (minus some ionic bonds, I believe)

I thought they conclude that it was a fern gametopyte that doesn’t produce a sporophyte stage
@Fishtory6 жыл бұрын
Still debating it...and also genetically deciphering how many variants there are (according to a University of Washington Botany Prof). There could be many different DNA strains all over, its all still a topic that gets "settled" every year or so, then new info is added
