When I met my husband he told me about this tradition in his family: They only give presents to the children in the family because Jesus was the only one to receive gifts from the three Magi. Mary, Joseph, the three Magi and the shepherds did not exchange gifts. I have to admit I was a bit appalled by that at first but then I saw the beauty in it. Kids depend on grown ups to fulfil their wishes, they can't just buy stuff for themselves. And it is so hard for the kids to find something to give to all those grown ups who already have everything they need. And what they can't afford, how could a child afford to buy it??? I know some families who do secret Santa and I think that is a nice idea for people who don't want to do completely without gift giving.
@kasironi5 жыл бұрын
My family has done this the last 2 years and it’s gone lovely. The way we see it we’re all adults and can buy what we want when we want it, so there is no need to generically exchange $20 gift cards to each other haha. Instead of present time we’ve added a lot more games into our Christmas party which creates lots of laughs and good memories.
@littlelambwatts56045 жыл бұрын
My family and I have been doing this for years haha it started with everyone just being poor so we would all make food for the big lunch we had and get little thing for each of the kids but now that we could all buy gift for everyone we just don't feel the need to. We go so used to not doing it that it's just a habit haha

Ohh you should do a tutorial! I have so many scraps and I’m a beginner too
@Toffnm5 жыл бұрын
@@clarissagutierrez5015 No fancy tutorial, but I can tell you how I make the most basic bags. Use a piece of fabric that is about twice the lenght than its width. Lay it on the tabletop, pattern side down. Then fold a strip about 1 inch/2,5cm thich along the longest side, press with an iron and then sew it down along the raw edge so you have a gap about 1,5-2cm between the folded edge and the raw edge, big enough to later thread the string through it. Now: first turn your fabric so the pattern side is up, then fold it lenghtwise in half (so the pattern faces the pattern). Stitch along the bottom and side, BUT not over the hole/tube/top thingy that you made earlier, where the string goes through. Turn your bag pattern side out, use a safety pin to thread a string or lace through the top, make a knot so it doesn't fall out and voila you're done. Search drawstring bag or gift bag on pinterest if you want more fancy ones.

an odd „gift card“ i really appreciate is for tattoos! if someone has mentioned they would love one from a specific artist, just stop by at the shop and ask , mine have given me a little card that the person receiving it can then use to make their appt (tattoo artists anyway take 50-100€ deposits here so it subtracts that from the total amount). as someone who wants to be covered in ink but is a broke student w a min wage side job, tattoos can get expensive and this way you’re also supporting a (local) artist

First off, wow! Thanks for the most amazing recommendation ever. I’m so glad you love the spice jars! And secondly, I appreciate how you stressed the idea of giving people what they ask for. This is my family’s struggle. They love giving gifts-and they love deals (and I don’t want or need anything). Now that I have kids, they just funnel that energy through them. They’ll buy polyester PJs because they can get 3 instead of the 1 nice cotton pair I asked for that will last through multiple kids... Listening to your loved ones is the best gift! Oh, and giving art is a great gift, too.

So obviously goodwill isn’t the best, but it’s the best selection you can get in a second hand store in my town (besides Salvation Army which I will not step foot in and antique curated stores). I have noticed that in recent years they have a lot of new-in-package products that are marked up. Like so many, entire displays of home goods, clothing, decor that is new. It’s a very generic looking brand. Most of it looks very cheaply made but some was cute. I got a woven Christmas table runner last time. Where do these products come from? Is buying these things saving them from ending up in a landfill or increasing demand for them? Very perplexed. Also I just want to share my score: I got a couple plastic storage totes that were grubby and had permanent marker on them, saying “so-and-so’s clothes” or something, for like 1.99 each. Cleaned them and took the sharpie off with a magic eraser and they are good as new. Those things can be expensive new and you don’t often see them second hand!
@ab79745 жыл бұрын
Sabine de Vos I think it’s more likely a store donating surplus inventory because they consistently have a LOT of it. I just hope it isn’t goodwill trying to sell new items alongside donated... I don’t know if that’s something we could expect them to disclose or not. It’s probably better to look for used alternatives in either case I guess 🤷♀️

Pantry meals is such a good tip and one that I would really like to focus on this year. I'm just at the beginning of my low waste journey, and one of the things I really want to focus on this year is my diet, eating healthier, and drastically cutting down on my animal consumption. But I'm such a picky eater with the taste buds of a child on vacation at grandmas who only wants to eat pizza and chicken tenders. I'm trying to try new things and cook things I don't really like in new ways to enjoy them more, but that means I need to whip out that bag of quinoa and lentils I have in my pantry instead of going to the tried and true rice :/ we'll get there eventually!

would you advise buying second hand tech before buying more eco-friendly options? i’m thinking of buying some wireless earphones and i’m not sure what to do; especially since with something as ‘intimate’ as earphones lots of people don’t agree with second hand.

Hi Shelby! My friend really wants makeup for her birthday (mascara, highlighter, eyeshadow, etc) but unfortunately earth hero doesn’t shop to Australia, any suggestions for some good sustainable/ethical shops? Thanks! X

Re: the House of Marley earbuds - how have they worked for you? I've found the reviews to be mixed and one big criticism I read was that the battery in the charging case can't be replaced after it starts dying, so you're left throwing them away once that battery fails. There are other wireless earbuds that have the same problem, but there are some that don't, and the reviewer felt that was a major omission for a product that focused so much energy on renewable materials.
