How to make T-Shirt Yarn using the Whole Shirt in a Continuous Strand

Little did you know that, when you made this video three years ago that your instructions would help people who are making masks for health workers during the Covid 19 pandemic. I ran out of elastic quite quickly and needed something to make ties for the masks. I remembered that loops of old t shirts would roll up but could not figure out how to get alot of them out of a T shirt. Your video helped. I've made over a hundred and have ties enough for lots more. Thanks

This is exactly why I came to this video! I am a nurse and my sewing group created during COVID for the sole purpose of making and distributing masks far and wide, have now taken on the task of making masks for the local elementary school students and staff. T shirt ties were the easiest way to accommodate everyone's head and I had no idea how to make them. The first tutorial I watched discarded half the shirt! Yikes! Thanks for this video!

I don’t throw away any scraps of yarn or anything soft and squishy because I use it for stuffing when stuffing dolls or pillows! So you really don’t need to waste any of the T-shirt at all!

This is the first tutorial that I've seen using the whole t shirt instead of just the main torso part up to the underarm and the rest was discarded. This tutorial is environmentally friendly. Especially in this day and age when everything is readily discarded.

Oh! What a great idea! I was thinking of stealing some of hubby's holier shirts but, my daughter died and left me with dozens of T-shirts, not my size, that I can use to make something for myself as a keepsake.

And still be able to wear a part of her with you. Like maybe use them to make numerous things as gifts, and distribute them among her family members. Maybe even sew in her intials or something that was her signature icon, name, a symbol, a heart etc. Anything sewn into each of the things you make that's in memory of her for all of the loved ones. I've seen where brides would have a small patch of material shaped into a small heart that was from a deceased loved ones favorite shirt or whatnot, sewn somewhere onto their wedding dress. I thought it was a nice loving idea.

Another thing you could do with em, after turning them into yarn, make a blanket using a pattern that'll make it look a lot like a quilt. Maybe add some pictures to some of the parts etc? It's just an idea. Make it a family crochet quilt or something.

Just found this video, and WOW! I just went through all the t-shirts in my house to donate last week, to only turn around after watching this video and pull most of them for yarn. I have been wanting to try this for the longest time and just can't bring myself to pay the high prices but now I can make those rugs and save on both ends, thanks for sharing your process. Been making masks for our large family and some friends because of the Coronavirus. I researched the mask making and talked to some nurses,surgical assistants, etc and they said that the masks with the elastic over the ears really make the back of ears raw. Even those those masks are faster and easier to make I wanted something different. So, I’ve been making masks using a halter style closing where the loop is at the back of the neck and it ties at the top. I cut up one T-shirt without side seams to make some continuous yarn by cutting around and around. But, not having any more no side seam shirts I started looking for alternatives and found your video. Love your method and I do have some tshirts with side seams. Will be doing it now so I can finish some more masks to help protect other people. I’ll bet you didn’t think when you made this video years ago that it would be used during a pandemic. This video may have been made 6 years ago but it is even more relevant today when we should be recycling/reusing as much as possible. I like how you used every little bit of the tee, and I even have a way to use the seams and other parts left over: In the garden! Those little strips would be great to tie up tomatoes and other plants that want to spread out and fall over. TFS! (BTW, making a plarn waste basket right now.)

This is the best video- creative, well done. My Great- grandmother made rugs from fabric in wool clothing and cutting and foldinging in and stiching in swirls... This tee shirt yarm reminds me of that and LOvE IT. ❤💕🎁😇

I wish all vid makers were as efficient as you; thanks so much! I've made Tarn (t-shirt yarn) and leave the goofy ends on the Tarn to more or less create a fringe effect, country-style.....once crocheted or knitted, etc., any too goofy ends can be trimmed out.

I've seen lots of people who make t-shirt yarn and this is the best video for making it because of the least amount of waste. Others just toss it and don't take the time to get the most of the t-shirt. Thank you for this video

Here is an idea for using the rib eye neck piece once you have trimmed it away. It's perfect for a headband for yourself or your daughters. You can even sew buttons or other cute accessories on it.

Planning to make a tee blanket for my newborn grandson with my son and daughter in laws old tees from festivals & concerts that they attended in highschool w hen they were younger👍💙👍can't wait to start !! Thank you so much for the tutorial !!! 📍🐕🐈📍🐈🐕📍 PS: being ALL for the little to no waste ideas like this, if you or someone you know sews toys or dolls for kids or pets the scraps you end up with can be shredded with scissors and turned into very soft stuffing. I made cat toys with left over crafting felt. Sewed up a few simple little fish & a ball, combined shredded balls of yarn that were too small to use, mixed stuffing and organic cat nip , sewed them shut and POW my 2 fuzz faces went to town lol

Oh no,I hope they didn't get upset w/you for using concert & festival tees. Mine have sentimental value to me,& my husband loves his even more than I do,lol! I know your heart was in the right place for the baby & all,but I'd have probably used a brand new pkg.shirts b4 any of my tee shirts from the souvenir booths @ concerts that cost around $30-$60ea,that can never be replaced in most cases...Now making them into a quilt,that you can keep most of the front pic.(& back sides usually show the venue/dates,so that'd be good to keep & use if u do),would've maybe been a great idea if they agreed to it,of course!!That would prob.only increase in value if kept intact,actually..

Thank you! I love that you did not waste the top of the shirt! I have been making net bags using a fisherman type netting technique. This should work great with netting to make shopping bags.
