Bio:
Susuka (wwsusuka.cl) is the Chilean base of its parent organization Supersudaca. The studio includes Juan Pablo Corvalan, MArch from the Ecole d'ingénieurs de Genève (1996) and MA, Berlage Institute, Rotterdam (2002); Nicole L'Huillier, architect, Universidad de Chile (2010); along with the collaboration of Gabriel Vergara, architect, Universidad de Talca (2006). Both Supersudaca and Susuka collaborate with many other individuals and institutions in the fields of education, research, design, and urbanism; their work has been presented and developed in the format of lectures, publications, and workshops worldwide. They have received coverage in Icon Magazine and their work was recognized at the São Paulo Biennale (2013) and by the Prince Claus Fund's partnership at the Venice Biennale (2012).
Statement:
Santiago lacks distinguishing public spaces-no central park, no Trocadéro, no Eiffel Tower, and no Sidney Bay. Social interaction, therefore, is very limited and tends to happen in commercial spaces, such as the shopping mall. Citizens are limited to commercial transactions and stay within their own social groups. The one exception is the historic parks built along the Mapocho river.
Fear (2013) describes a proposal of a green ring of almost 100 kilometers of cultural and recreational public space stretching from the airport to the Andes mountains. This would be created by extending the few vibrant parks over the rest of the abandoned riverside. The result would connect all the disaggregated principal public spaces, as well as create an ecological corridor. This solution could dramatically reduce physical segregation and create a sustainable transport system.
