I had the great fortune to hear her and Marilyn Horne in the debut season of their Norma collaboration in the spring of l970 - I can still remember the thrill at hearing voices that this or any other century would never be able to match.

No one but Joan Sutherland could sing Norma so seemingly effortlessly. Callas may have been more dramatic, but Joan Sutherland's vocal abilities far exceeded those of the deeply-flawed and challenged voice of Callas.

Sinceramente ho appena ascoltato la Callas in diverse versioni e ora ascolto la Sutherland e non mi sembra per niente superiore alla collega. A parte l'acuto finale che è ovviamente agevolissimo come da lei, il suo timbro non è per niente più bello di quello della collega. Ne sto ascoltando tante in questo periodo e, anche se non mi sento un esperto, mi sento di dire che non sceglierei la Sutherland fra le 10 migliori di tutte. O per lo meno la sceglierei solo in alcune opere soltanto. Non mi convince mai completamente, nel timbro, nel fraseggio (pessimo) e nel ritmo. Posso dirlo ?

Sutherland's Bel Canto technique was flawless, so was Callas. If you can't say something sensible or truthful , keep your opinions to yourself
