What wonderful singing from both of them. I adore Joan Sutherland's voice and revel in all the music that is available online. My days would not be complete without my daily dose of opera. I just ignore the mockers and scoffers and am deeply appreciative of those who take the time to download music and videos for the rest of us to enjoy.

aside from the gorgeous singing from both, I keep watching this from 1:24 on just to see how wonderfully and dramatically her blocking is, the way she lifts her arms while singing and the ways she moves around the chair and table to open the secret exit. That's beyond what a director can instruct an actor to do, and she accomplished it by simply LISTENING to the music. That's an opera singer par excellence.

I was in the audience at her very first performance of this opera, with John Alexander in Vancouver 1972. I was seated in the front row of the balcony, and in the audience hysteria following her final aria I'm rather surprised I didn't levitate right off it. I'm normally rather reserved, but I think I was the first to scream 'Brava!'

If someone asked me---What is opera?---I would show them this clip. It's like you're at the opera in 1835 or something. Kraus is like a divo from the old Paris Opéra. Sutherland and Kraus are divine. This is 'The Opera', folks---as it should be, used to be. The final C6 in unison is to die for. Donizetti = sublime.

@eradesso What an absolutely ridiculous observation of Sutherland's performance in this clip. She was completely involved in the character, her words were understandable and her singing was, as usual, magnificent. I, too, am a great fan of Caballe's; her rendition of this aria in the clip on KZbin from the 60's is stunningly beautiful. Sutherland bashers are pathetic; enjoy both of these great performers and thank God their work was extensively recorded.

I always reference this production when I hear drabblers whine about how she declined in the 70s. Without a doubt, this is one of her greatest accomplishments on stage (as was her Anna Bolena four years later). Any and all Lucrezia's should be measured against this blistering and virtuosic assumption of the part.

For those who do not understand Joan's words - can you NOT hear the tone, amplitude and flexibity and range.?
@wilsonwatt92835 жыл бұрын
You identify the problem. Opera is drama and unless the tone, amplitude, flexibility, and range support and convey the drama then it is not fulfilling completely the intent of the work. Frankly, I find Sutherland understandable in many of her performances but perhaps less so than singers who do not have the problem of an Australian accent, which makes understanding even an Australian talking a little difficult.

@eradesso I love Caballe, and saw her in the 80's, but acting was not a strong suit for her either, or movement....it was the "mere" vocalizing. Sutherland was the greatest Lucrezia I have ever heard, and she most certainly did act, and very well, as evidenced in "oh, A te bada" with the baritone. Your trash-talking this amazing performance will not elevate the inferior ones. Nice try though.
@eradesso13 жыл бұрын
@Eiswirth1 the fact you know the lyrics doens't mean they are clear. i love sutherland, amazing technique, power, colour and what have you but even the most fanatic of her fans wouldn't have the guts to say she had a clear diction. in any language, in any time of her career. end of it.
@wilsonwatt92835 жыл бұрын
Actually you are wrong. In some of her earliest recordings, particularly the Baroque arias conducted by Adrian Boult ever word is understandable although certainly affected by her Australian accent. It was only with the encouragement of Bonynge to ignore the language so as to perfect what he saw as bel canto [which to him meant only beauty of voice and not proper use of that voice to support the drama] that her diction suffered.

If Sutherland wasted half the precision she had for music on diction she would have been unsurpassed and unsurpassable.... BUT.. she did not. Always mushy, always "merely" vocalising her way through scores. No drama, no acting, no enunciating. Specifically for this duet, I'll stick to Caballé-Vanzo for vocality and acting - one of opera's best moments. Check my videos for a NY Pirate.

@Hako2004 @Hako2004 your reading skills are even worse than your hearing, it appears. if there is someone you can't describe as a vocalizer is indeed Caballé, A if not THE Queen of Verismo. Being static on stage is hardly any worse than running around on stage speaking a language unknown to mankind. How do you get the drama if you don't even know what Sutherland is singing, EVER? Caballé was less brilliant in Era Desso, but she owns the role, fanatism doesn't change facts. Nice try though.
