Just so you know, the year after the assassination of Commodus (not in the arena but by his mistress and personal trainer) is called the year of the 5 emperors. So if they went back in time, you could get part of your wish. :)

Part of what made the original work so well was that it was a great presentation of the chief virtues of Stoicism. We see Maximus go from an ideal soldier who wants nothing more than to go home to his family to a broken man on a search for vengeance and then returning to a man of virtue as he puts aside his desire for selfish vengeance in persuit of justice. The bittersweetness of the ending was that he did finally get to return to his family again after his service to Rome was done, but he could only do so in death.

Guy from two successful TV shows is now everywhere, hes fine, but there are so many other great actors from former TV shows that are not getting nearly enough recognition, while their co-stars are in everything. Jon Hamm, nowhere, Elizabeth Moss, everywhere. I think the criteria has to be that they have to be in two major TV hits, and have to be either woke AF (Pascal) or a scientologist (Moss).

Ok it's a horror science fiction masterpiece (which i'm old enough to have seen in the cinema when it came out) but sadly no one ever seems to mention his 1977 beautiful film THE DUELLISTS starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel set in the Napolionic era. It's an overlooked classic and deserves a mention in any Ridley Scott conversation.

Pedro Pascal is fast on his way to becoming box office poison. Too many projects, meaning his talents are at a sheer saturation point that folks get tired of seeing him, too Pedro Pascal as in he basically plays himself in almost every film, and too many spitting in people's faces he disagrees with moments, meaning that if you already are tired of him he's making seeing him an even greater annoyance. If you're going to be in a lot of films you need to keep people at least "meh" about seeing you constantly not openly thinking about "Hey isn't that the actor who called people who voted for X terrible people?"

Its this luck actors seem to have who are in two hit TV shows. Elizabeth Moss was in Mad Men then The Handmaids Tale, and maybe her Scientologist buddy Tom Cruise got her into a bunch of big movies as a result of those successes as well. Bryan Cranston was in Malcom in the Middle and Breaking Bad. Pascal came off two major TV shows (though I did not remotely get the hype over The Last of Us), and hes a woke mouthpiece as well.

Jurassic Park CGI was and is spectacular. Its used somewhat remotely though, actually. And practical effects its ALWAYS better in my opinion. It solidifies whats happening on the screen, it makes it more grounded yet at the same time more impressive. CGI get rids of all the obstacles and many of the "if buts and should we really?", it removes true old school craftmanship. Alien was literallt puppets, and its one of the most atmospheric movies ive ever seen. Aliens was also mostly puppets (if i remember it correctly). So like with "The Lion King", "The Jungle Book", and "The Little Mermaid", they apparently felt the need to milk the IP for a little more dough. Nah, they didn't fill the Colosseum with water, not during those times. The original design could have been flooded, but by Domitian's reign the entire substructure was added and there's no way to waterproof all that; moving platforms, lifts, tunnels, trapdoors, gates. Sea battles would have been held in a Naumachia specially designed to host those. Trajan's Naumachia probably, right about where Vatican City is these days.. although I suppose Circus Flaminius would work too, it could be flooded, it'd be closer, and should still have been in operation during that time (a bit outside my are of expertise).

Cameron is WORSE than Scott. Dropped Terminator to make silly Avatar and Avatar 2 that are the SAME story with 3 more to go and I'm tired of that world already. Making the the other tribe pacific islanders made me roll my eyes. Where are they going to go next, outer space? This is Scott's only sequel and I knew it would suck but at least he's tries different things.

@@midnighthour733 Scott has made some stinkers in the last decade and a half or so, but he also made The Martian, which is fantastic, and over his career he's made more iconic films than Cameron in my opinion. To me, Cameron's last truly awesome film was Aliens, which was 1986, and everything since then has been okay at best.

I think he currently just takes the script that someone gives him and starts filming, without critically analyzing the script. I remember that the first Gladiator had a really bad script, and he hired other screenwriters and worked with them to rewrite the script. It doesn't seem like something he would do today.
