I’m so glad your back Shane! I’ve missed seeing your videos! I hope you and your family are doing well. I also wanted to add one point about sutures that you touched on. Which helps explain the importance of sutures. As the majority of the human body contains sterile cavities. Closing wounds which penetrate the skin and the sub-dermal layers. We decrease the chance of internal infections by restoring the barrier created by the skin. Which creates these sterile cavities. Without closures, the cavities could become septic.

Hi Shane, Thanks for all the videos. I'm an English RN and have been out of practice for a while, I plan to make a fresh start next year and hope to work in theaters. Your videos have given me a great insight and made me feel very enthusiastic about going into this field of nursing. Your expert knowledge and love of your job come through on the videos very well. You really do have a talent at explaining things clearly but yet keeping it interesting. Thanks again all the way from the UK 🇬🇧. ❤

One thing I’m loving right now is knowing and understanding what you’re talking about. For example, you’re mention of using vicryl or monocryl for skin. I’m thinking yeah most of my surgeons use 3-0 vicryl for subcue and 4-0 monocryl for skin.

I love these videos.. they really helped me decide I wanted to get back into the clinical arena at the beginning of the year (new scope of practice) so I set about enrolling...fast fwd 10 months and I am just enjoying another vid in some downtime between studying for my first set of exams as an A-tech.. what is cool is some of the generalist OR videos "who's who in OR" even featured in some of our classes! Would love to see more videos from the Anaesthetic end of the table..loved the interview with surgeon Ken's perspective...Maybe you have an anaesthetist and a tech colleague you could interview too? I mean surgeons get all the cred for their artistic skill and genius, but the Anaesthetist is the pilot and engineer keeping the lifeline during surgery!! ...keep up the good work

Im currently finishing my prereq courses for my surg tech program and i have to write a paper in my psychology class asking current surg tech questions about the job. If you could please take some time to answer these few questions id greatly appreciate your input. 1. What was the most stressful or challenging surgery in which you participated? How did you cope with the stress?

-How do you manage your stress -Does having routines help with stress? -Do you have any type of routine before or after a case? 1. If you have a disagreement with a surgeon or another staff member, how do you handle it?
-Have you ever been in a situation where because you were 'lower' then someone, that you didn’t feel like you were being heard? If so how did you resolve it.

 1. How do you deal with people from other cultures or who shared different values/ views then you? -Have you ever dealt with or experienced prejudice in your workplace, whether that be with a coworker or patient.

These are great videos. I’ve been watching for about 3-4 months, but this video made me think to myself, do Surgical Techs (or Nurses) do the stitching? Not the surgeon? Is that the norm, or only when there is a rush? I’m only tangentially in the industry. Not directly in patient care, as I manage construction for healthcare facilities (including design/construction of OR’s). Thanks in advance.

I need to practice hand tying. I work in urgent care so we always use the instrument tie but it’s nice having different options. Seeing a video showing how you manage to hold the suture and your instruments all while tying would be helpful. Obviously I don’t have to deal with sterile fields like you do so I have more leeway and can put stuff down but I’m sure it’s more efficient to be able to hold them like you do.

Glad to see you making vids again, how is everything over there with covid? I'm in nyc, and work mostly in a surgical center, during the worst of it we Had no elective cases. So basicly a lot of fractures, nerve and tendon repairs and reconstructions. I was the only tech there everyone else got laid off for that time. The hospital was crazy and it was very hard to travel. Not to mention we had a massively hard time getting surgical gloves and gowns. Idk you you use cardinal health for packs and other supplies but they had a massive recall on most of there packs and gowns do to a contaminate. So covid hit around the same time when we where already having a shortage in supply's. Just been a crazy time.

@SurgicalTechTips
@SurgicalTechTips 4 жыл бұрын
I did instrument ties on the vertical mattress part of the video. Only time I instrument tie is when I need to make the suture go far. I personally like to feel the knot go down with my finger to ensure good pressure so I hand tie almost everything I can w/ the exception of needing the suture to go long with interrupted stitches.

I think it depends on your own personality. I tried nursing and HATED it because I felt like I was just pleasing patients all the time. I'm currently in a surg tech program and I love it SOOO much more! I am definitely a technical worker, so choosing surg tech was the right move for me. My best advice would be to do extensive research on both fields and find which one would suit you better as they are extremely different. Best of luck!
