I know this video is from 2017. I have two of the Suunto Clipper, the first one bought sometime in 2019 and it did not break and nothing has fallen. Yet. Last one I recently paid 18 euros. Yes, not cheap, but all the 2 dollar knock offs you find online stop working after a few days. And this is only way I have found that I always have a reliable compass with me. April 2024.

You are absolutely right that the SUUNTO button clipper compass will be deflected by a wrist watch. Every watch I own deflects it. Casio, Orient, Seiko, Timex... also a cell phone, flashlight, VHF Radio, pocket knife. The solution for this is to use a separate velcro watch band with plastic hardware and wear alone on opposite wrist to watch. The best price I was able to find free shipped on eBay was 15 bucks which I think is worth it, The precision checked out to 5 degrees no problem. I picked up mine to backup a Brunton TruArc 3 and a Vion Mini 2000.

@@HaasGrotesk I fought my way through a snow blizzard in white out conditions and a nasty run in with an angry yeti, who wanted my compass. It was a fight to the death! So I just gave it to him. I'm sure he got lost and probably perished in the high mountains somewhere, because this compass doesn't work that well.

I have one attached to my Casio. Going on two years, still working fine. White fingernail polish added to the indicator helps at night. Or perhaps a nice shade of Zombie green in florescent would be better. Its accurate, works great with pace beads. Fun on flights when the pilot banks, you know where you're headed, hopefully not neg vertical. Ha

Thanks Leo--this has been on my amazon wish list for awhile--sometimes the price will drop to about 15 dollars or so but--I didn't realize it was so small. I too have other compasses so this one will be getting bumped from my list--great review--thanks

Its also waterproof though, so good for divers who want a backup compass in case the main fails

I bought it to clip on to my maps so I can orientate the map I'm using. I find it great for this function.

I've had one on a Timex Ironman watchband since 2004 and it works fine. Had to replace it earlier this year, but I've gone through three Timex Ironman watches in the same time period.

I have been successfully using those $4 Callaghan's Ball-type compass. (I have 5 or 6). A couple I clipped off the metal pin and made a short lanyard and plastic mitten clip. -lots of versatility. I agree with the pros and cons. Plus I don't wear a watch, so the trek-pole idea is a good one.

Hey my friend, interesting to see it thrown off by the metal watch. But I’d be interested to see if a larger full size compass could maintain 100% accuracy next to that same watch. That would be a more thorough test.

You're meant to keep compasses away from any ferrous metals. This is not a novel thing nor unique to this button compass. All compasses are thrown off by proximity to ferrous metal.

Anything like a Fitbit will generate a magnetic field and effect compasses. All compasses have this problem, not just button compasses, and it is something that you have to work around. Any ferromagnetic metal or electrical field will cause magnetic distortions that pull compass needles off magnetic north to some degree. It is just physics

You said your one is for the northern hemisphere... what is the difference in compasses for northern or Southern Hemisphere?

In the northern hemisphere, the magnetic field dips down into the Earth so the compass needle has a weight on the south end of the needle to keep the needle in the horizontal plane. In the southern hemisphere, the weight needs to be on the north end of the needle. Appreciate the question, and thanks for watching!

Say Heah, Yeah, I depend on my Compass alot. Usually I will have two on me. My Military Compass I'll set with my home base, My Davly Large Voyager Compass I use as my directional compass. When I'm on unfamiliar territory, I also bring a good map that's current and Binoculars. My Davley is very well made. It wasn't cheap. It L@@Ks like a Pocket Watch but a larger. It's a Davley Large Voyager Compass that has a Rotating Bezel. It L@@Ks like a larger pocket watch. It's very accurate. I could also use it on map reading. For instance. I take a bearing of two distance points. I take the bearings in degrees, and correlate those degrees on my map, Where the two points cross, That's where I'm at on the map. So yeah, a comoass is very important to me. But so is my Binoculars. Plus a good Recent Map is very important. Yup, you got to do your homework. Oh, I have a funny guys joke. What's the difference between Fish and Meat ?,, Well if you beat your fish it will die heh heh heh, Happy Journey using your compass.,,.p

Subjective: It looks like it didn't move much next to your watch. It looks like the compass went off track next to a watch, because you moved it trying to show how off it goes by what you feel you see. Also, not all stainless steel is magnetic. That is how I test the quality of stainless steel, like surgical stainless steel.

i have to say, that the metal throwing it off seems unlikely in a survival situation you would be using it in. i understand how u said the water bottle which id say most of us use and the watch, but if your navigating with it your probably not going to be holding metal or anything and if u seriously want it ud probly have a watch fit for it. but like you said its personal and up to you entirely.

Breaks the clip and the bezel? Damn, what do people use it for? Its a compass, not a hammer. Everything breaks if you dont take care of it, its accuracy among button compasses alone is worth the price.

When on a watch it's more due to the electronics inside. I've had one on a mechanical watch with zero deviation.

That's not the point I made. As I showed in the video when you get it near larger metal objects, thats when it gets off. The watch didn't do it, other objects did.
