We did Wahweap years ago, and thank goodness we did the easier route, or, I would have never made it :-) You are much younger than us. Hello Tristan. Really enjoy your videos. As an old man raised on ranches I thought I’d venture an educated guess on the block cabin you found. Especially since there are old corrals near, and there were multiple bunks in the cabin, I’d bet that this was built as a roundup site for whoever had the grazing permit for the range land when it was BLM. They’d gather the cattle every year to separate the young market stock from the breeding stock, then take the feeders to a dry lot ( a location at the home ranch) to fatten up for market. Just a guess, but I’d put a few bucks on it 😏. Again, thanks for sharing your travels. I can’t get out as much anymore. Been rode hard and put away wet too many times i guess😂. Happy trails!

Thank you for the PA on the Crypto Crust (as we call it). Such an important part of the ecosystem in the desert. We have done a lot of creative rock hopping and toe jumping so we "Don't bust the crust!" on our many hikes down there. New zoom lens is impressive. Looks like a new pack as well. I always tell my friends that southern Utah is my favorite place to explore & that Grand Staircase Escalante NM is #1 on my list of impressive nat'l monuments. I hope to get back to Utah later this year. On my last trip (2017), I wanted to drive down Cottonwood Canyon Rd, but alas, the rental I had was a FWD type & the mud in the low parts of the road forced me to turn around & head back to Rt.12. I especially wanted to drive thru the Coxcomb - maybe next time! Your explanation of the hoodoo formations, toadstools & living soil was spot on! You have a true fan in Pennsylvania. Judging by the presense of the cattle and the correl, I would guess that the cinderblock stucture is a line camp for the cowboys to use when they are working the cattle, etc. Such cabins are scattered around the southwest where livestock are grazed or where they are rounded up for veterinary needs or loading for shipping.

If you're ever in the Santa Fe, NM area, there's another national monument with some pretty spactacular HooDoos on it. It's called Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. It's about 20 miles due west of Santa Fe on the on the very south end of Carson National Forrest.

The rocks in this area are about 120-80 million years old. They where formed in the late Cretaceous period (when T-rex lived), when this area was a tropical forest right on the ocean that used to split North America in two. So these rocks where formed in a shallow ocean/ mangrove forest environment. It’s a very interesting place FULL of fossils! This was such a great video! I am so proud to be a Southern Utah native. P.S thank you so so much for mentioning the Cryptobiotic soil! It is so very important to know, and avoid stepping on it!

This was amazing. And it brought back memories because I have been to these HooDoos and they are special. Even the cows which was a cattle drive and we had to wait for them to get out of the way. Hey Tristan, This place is a blast. Thanks for sharing...Just a thing or 2 concerning the hoodoos formation... Is it true that the rock on the top protects the dirt column underneath... But not only... because the water let the column dryer, it creates an ion transfer between the wet dirt and the dry column. This ion transfer makes the column much stronger and resistant to erosion through a slow chemical reaction... If the rock collapses, then it won't be long before seeing the column disappearing...

There is a neat hike that leaves around Big Water that traverses through a shallow creek that ends up at hoodoos like those. The ones you saw were pretty spectacular as well. So many cool areas in Escalante that I couldn't share to avoid getting too busy.

Years ago, I followed that "main road" where you turned off and parked a bit further down to access the hoodoos. It'll eventually lead you down a really steep hill (which at this point is probably fully washed out because it was badly rutted and loose bentonite clay when I did it, but thankfully I had a rear locker in my truck). Following that down, it actually brings you right to the main wash to access the Wahweep hoodoos within a mile or two. Definitely much nicer than hiking the 8 miles up the main wash from Big Water. I like the way you did it though. Definitely lots of interesting canyons along the way. Maybe I'll head back out there this spring and wander some of the side canyons. I always love that area!

That's a free shelter and free to be used. You find old miner cabins throughout the Desert Southwest and standard protocol is to raise the flag above the cabin to let others know it is occupied. People go out of their way to keep old cabins up and even stock some with water and canned food. You surely must have come across some at some point? When it was BLM land it was not illegal to build a small cabin for shelter/hunting. Now to live in it without a mining claim wasn't allowed.
