The Most Unhinged Touhou Fanwork: Cookie☆

Touhou Project has a lot of fanworks, and when it comes to the race of influence, there can only be one first place: a fanwork so unhinged, so bad-yet-good, so "totally filled with a wacky community" that it has become taboo/infamous within the internet at large. How do you even accomplish that?? Ask the people who made Cookie☆ (and the Inmu community)!
This was a long time coming -- I always wanted to cover this yet had no idea how. A certain special someone from Touhoufest influenced my choice to make it, yet could never figure out the best way to put it... I guess that's what Cookie does to you, hmm?! It's like a little talisman they put on your head as punishment -- watch Cookie while paying full attention.
If you want me to do more Cookie (since there's a lot to it), I am open to doing it! You just gotta recommend me something, or idk. Anyway Cookie fans don't do any "funky" things to me xd

My only interaction with the Cookie ☆ sub culture was the time I commented on post with a picture of Nazrin, only to be told and ranted at that it was not infact Nazrin but instead this other characters who's name I forget and to be told a lengthy explanation of why the designs are different, and when I asked okay but what is different about the character, only to be told that a certain voice actor voices them so that's why they are named after them which somehow makes them a completely different character, and for some reason this all makes perfect and reasonable sense to this unhinged individual. Hey Cookie☆ fan here (I am mentally sane and well I promise) but essentially the multiple incarnation of characters are all because of the different voice dramas that falls under the Cookie☆ category of videos. Essentially, characters in this subculture are referred to by their VA’s name (For example the Marisa in the OG Cookie☆ video is called UDK and the Reimu here would be caused RU (the shortening of names is part of the Inmu culture and how they refer to their characters)) and are treated as being separate from their Touhou counterparts due to how they not only stray far away from Touhou canon, but are essentially the voice actresses themselves as bei the characters. The VAs got doxxed and a lot of shit was figured out about them such as physical appearances and academic ventures. Because of the info gained from doxxing, they associate that with their Cookie☆ counterpart to further make fun of the project (mainly stuff like making RU fat since she’s chubby irl or giving UDK glasses and making fun of how she made terrible art pieces, etc.) This goes on for future voice drama projects where similar Touhou characters would be used but with different VAs and so new info to be doxxed, and thus entirely new characters. This is seen prominently with Marisa who have roughly 21 different VAs. Hell one of the voice drama made fun of this where the gimmick was between every scene there would be a new Marisa/Marisa VA and was pointed towards and made fun of. Uh yea I did a really sloppy job at explaining this and what I said was scattered all over the place so please if you have any questions or need further clarifications I’d love to explain more. It is my hyperfixation after all lmao

At least in Japan, Cookie☆ is hardly considered a Touhou community and is treated as a derivative or part of the A Midsummer Night's Lewd Dream(＝inmu) meme. Inmu community was trolling not only Cookie☆ but also various anime and japanese subcultures by linking their meme. For example, the anime "A-Channel" fell prey to inmu simply because the title of episode 6 was "A Midsummer Night's..."

Fantastic video! I'm from the Cookie☆Community in Japan, and I must say there's no other video out there that explains that 'terrible voice drama' in such detail! However, there are many wonderful MADs and creations derived from Cookie☆. One I particularly recommend is the voice drama '自己矛盾☆.' It's more enjoyable if you're familiar with Cookie☆ and Inmu culture, but I think you would have no problem appreciating it. I'm not fluent in English, so my words might not come across clearly.

It's pretty easy to understand actually, just like Daiyousei, Koakuma serves the role of Patchouli's assistant in most fanworks, just like how Daiyousei is often portrayed as being Cirno's friend. The relation between those characters is what makes their "personality". In most fanworks, Koakuma is shown to be a more talkative and less serious in contrast to Patchouli. Similar to how Daiyousei is portrayed as being shy and worrysome in contrast to Cirno's defiant personality. Just compare these two to Lily White, who has way more appearances, but lacks a compatible stage coleague. Relation matters.

From what I also understand as well, the production and community growth around 2011 and beyond for the Inmu community was due to also a major pushback against mass deletion of videos, known as the "Homocaust" in a familiar term to the Inmu community. The backlash as a result brought a lot more attention within the Nico Nico Douga community to rally against "UNEI", or the administration staff at dwango. As you mentioned the "anti-commercial" part of these videos, does seem to be play a major role in why niconico is flooded with this content for over 13+ years compared to other phenomenon like Wrestling Series, KYM, and others I cannot name off the top of my head.

If anything, Touhou cookie is a very good example of a fanbase when it lacks grounds rules. Touhou project had a lot of fem-to-fem shipping due to it's lack of male characters and all the characters having a somewhat friendly relationship with the others even though they cause problems. However, the shipping is usually just a friendship, sibling, or mother-daughter type and most fans had an unsaid mutual agreement that anything going beyond that should stay in the dark. It also didn't help that many characters in Touhou don't exactly have a proper backstory or consistent characterization which make most attempts to create proper rules, futile. ZUN, the creator of Touhou project also didn't create such rules as he seemed to like the idea of people having "free reign" of his characters. Due to all these rules(or rather the lack of), when Touhou Cookie came along, they were technically free to do as they pleased and unfortunately disregard the unsaid mutual agreement mentioned above. This resulted in one of the very dark parts of the Touhou fandom being dragged into the light as it showed how crazy and hardcore some of the fanon could be. Not even ZUN knew or heard about this due to his idea of free reign for the fans until someone brought it up in an interview. Nowadays, this type of material and shipping is almost "normal" in the eyes of many because of the numerous pride movements and promotions to support these movements. It's also because of this, many Touhou comic or writing fan works are yuri shipping.

Hi, I am Japanese and a fan of Cookie☆ and Inm. (Not something I can say with much pride anyway.) Personally, I feel that the current situation of Cookie☆ is not so good, or rather, there is a section that is growing sluggish. With the rise of voice dramas with synthetic voices (Zundamon, Yukari-san, etc.) and the emergence of HIKAMANI (Japanese top KZbinrs "ヒカキン" edited into MADs), I believe that the people who used to be around Cookie☆ and inm have been drained by them and have become multipolar (not only on Nico Nico Douga but also on KZbin (The same can be said of KZbin as well as Nico Nico Douga). Since 養殖Cookie☆ (contributor of しりり and 自己矛盾 etc...) in the late 2010s, there seems to have been no feature-length works that could be the source of MAD (This is because the community's population has decreased and it has become less vibrant I think). well I like all cookies☆, so that's okay.

Shiriri was found to have a very dangerous criminal history of manufacturing fake methamphetamine and also was discovered to be a failed VOCALOID producer prior to making Cookie content, which he found major success, but was ultimately rewarded by the wrath of the KRSW followers and anti-Cookie internet vigilantes.
