@@Dreamex12 Of course music can make you feel something. But there's a difference between feeling something and typing something like this in a KZbin comment section because you want attention. If he didn't want attention he would have kept his thoughts to himself. But he wanted attention. That's the only reason he typed a comment like that on a public forum. That's the way I see it. OK all you mid 40's-50 people, if you could go back in time to relive the 80's, BUT you would lose 15 to 20 years of your life, would you it??? The 80's were a unique and amazing decade. The music! The parties! The dances! The friends (many of which you still have 30 years later). Even the movies (ET, The Breakfast Club, Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Dirty Dancing ("Nobody puts Baby in the corner!")!! Now that you know that the worst that can happen to you is to be grounded for a week or two, would you have done more than you did the first time?? I gotta say YES to both questions. Many of us want to get back to the big hair, the leg warmers, and the jean jackets! The 80's were the last decade that, as a kid, we could stay out until dark, safely go into neighbors houses, and there was no reason to get out of bed if you fell asleep and forgot to lock the front door. We didn't have XBox or Wees, or cell phones. If we had a day of technological gaming, it was playing Frogger, Space Invaders, or Pong! We were totally happy playing hide and seek or Cowboys and Indians (I'm part Native American, though being an Indian never bothered me) and we never heard of being PC. We made complex tunnels in the snow banks, used ropes to swing 5 or 6 kids at a time 20 to 40 feet in the air (and we all lived when we fell off!), and fed marshmallows to raccoons from the back door steps (that ended when most of the Northeastern Raccoons were killed off when the rabies scare hit) . Some of us with a lot of patience even taught chipmunks to eat nuts out of our hands or on our shoulders. Life was easier, and a hell of a lot more fun than any kid has today. Why? Because we were safe. Children could wander the neighborhood, ride our bikes along roadsides, and enjoy running through connected yards sometimes until 9 or 9:30! To put it simply, we were safe. Everyone knew everyone but maybe it was because we could go OUTSIDE (and we preferred it that way)!

When I listened to this song for the first time while being able to understand the lyrics ( I am not a native english speaker ) , it hits me hard, because the way Suzanne Vega created this song I was able to really understand that not everyone had a childhood like I had. This song hit too close to home, because as I was growing up, my sister and myself were severely abused by a male family member. He had this "rule" that if anyone weighed over 100 lbs, they could get hit like a man; I weighed 105 lbs. I'd go to school with "goose eggs" on my head, huge bruising on the back of my legs and back, split lips, bloody noses, and I'd tell people -- if they asked -- that I fell down the stairs, or I fell hit my head, or ran into the door. The first time I heard this, my best friend made me listen to it. I began crying, and she knew immediately what was going on with me. I begged her not to tell anyone, because I didn't want to get beaten that night ( I was anyway, because of something that my sister had done). For 9 years, almost every single day, I was beaten. IF I hear a child cry and them begging whomever to stop, you better believe that I phone the police. I also ask for an ambulance to come as well. I did save a little Boy, about 6 or 7, and his effing "mother" (I'm using that term very loosely here) had beaten him so bad that his poor little face was twice its size, 2 black eyes, and he looked like he hadn't eaten in weeks. The police did arrest the woman, and I'm even having a hard time calling her that. People, if you hear ANY abuse going on, call the police immediately! Please! Don't think that someone else will do it, because they're thinking that same exact thing.

A statement by Suzanne Vega in a 1987 Swedish TV special regarding the song: "A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child-in real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different." So yeah... Luka is a boy yo.

Prince was one of those musicians that if he suggested a band to you, it meant they were probably better than most crap you'd hear. It's easy to see why he expressed respect and professional admiration for Suzanne Vega. To me Vega is Kate Bush level talent. It's sad more people don't see her that way.

@@malpete I'll tell you as a 56 year old man, that I was disciplined as a child and grew up admirably well. It was just discipline for the stupid things I did. That gave me a sense of respect for the elders and talking well to another person, and in all a great lesson in life. I know nowadays, it can be a fine line, as there are psychopaths, and pedophiles etc., but back in the day, that was how we got to be the persons with respect and goodwill to everybody we met, otherwise we would have our asses whupped. We need to get that back in the curriculum. Children are just crazy nowadays with the "child services" threat, for nothing at all most of the times, as they don't wanna do their chores.

I oftentimes wonder if Miss Vega all those years ago actually understood what a profound effect she was about to have on the entire world by releasing this. Even today in 2023, still has the same effect as when I first heard it. Physical pain heals, but the emotional scars truly do last forever. It's nice to be reminded of what made you become you sometimes, even if it strips you to your bare naked soul.

Your words remind me of a poem I once composed: How deep they are So we soothe them with laughter And bandage them with smiles But every now and then They ooze with painful remembrance And time must treat them once again Those ugly scars of youth.

Jesus came to heal the scars and generational curses of those long after he was crucified, died and conquered death so we all could be born again. All we have to do is ask and receive Him as Lord and Savior. He renews the rest. ❤✝
So, you know that one song you heard when you were younger and liked it because of the beat, but when you get older, and actually hear the lyrics, it...feels different? Yeah, that's me listening to this now.

I remember this song from my middle school years and Its nothing like I remember it. I remember it being a funny quirky song... its not that at all. The message went right over my head. Probably because I fortunately had no experience or awareness of the message.

Me too. Back in the 90s I always jive on this song. Not knowing, that this song is also about me. Growing as battered child. I certainly understand every lyrics on it. It is really hard growing up and these things will affect you in latter part of your life. Having diagnosed with Major depression and General anxiety disorder. It is so hard. To all parents out there. Don't physically abused or mentally abused your kids they will still carry it on when they grow.

My mother was abusive and I really connected with Luka. I remember her losing her temper with me because I'd lost my slippers, I was five, anyway she found them and threw them at me and they hit me straight in the eye. She was so scared and made me rehearse some bull's hit story to tell my teacher at school...she wouldn't let me leave until it was word perfect and stood over me while I told the teacher. It was the first time I thought to myself: She knows this is wrong. This song gave me a lot of hope.
