Very cool song. I remember the song Luka from years ago. I was watching a British crime drama and a character was named Luka. I Googled on Suzanne Vega and this song and have been listening to her songs for two hours. Wow how did i miss her? Enjoying now though. Too early for me to make a decision but i think Suzanne is in Kate Bush territory. Art, lyrics, haunting melodies, a totally natural beauty to both ladies. Very cool. BTW i am 73 years old. Just goes to show never stop searching for great music.

I first saw this music video, and heard this song, for the first time, at nine years old in an early evening in August of 1987 on either MTV or VH1 (cannot remember which one) when I was punished to my room for the rest of the night. I was disrespectful to my dad when he said no after I asked if a neighborhood friend could eat over. After dinner I had to spend the rest of the night in my room until bedtime. It being summer, there was still a couple hours of daylight left and it killed me not going back outside. It was a beautiful summer day. So I put my TV on (I was never told I couldn't watch TV) and turned to one of those music video stations. This video came on and I was mesmerized. I had never heard this song on the radio, ever. Not even since. OR seen the music video ever again until about 2012 or 2013 when I found it on KZbin. If it wasn't for being punished to my room that night in 1987, I would have never known about this song even still. Haha.... It's a funny memory now and I have to laugh every time I watch this video or listen to this song. As a nine year old who was feeling sorry for himself at the time, this video and song comforted me. Such an appropriate name for the song as well since I had to spend the rest of that evening in solitude. Haha... I'm always amused by this memory now. Great song and video. I always enjoy putting this on.

Solitude stands by the window She turns her head as I walk in the room I can see by her eyes she's been waiting Standing in the slant of the late afternoon And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame Solitude stands in the doorway And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time we've met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight" And she says "I've come to lighten this dark heart" And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say "I've never thought of finding you here" I turn to the crowd as they're watching They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm I wanted to be in there among them I see how their eyes are gathered into one And then she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight" And she says"l've come to lighten this dark heart" And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say "I've never thought of finding you here" Solitude stands in the doorway And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time we've met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame

Some of my favorite music videos from the 80s are this one, New Order's Perfect Kiss (also directed by Demme) and Midnight Oil's Put Down That Weapon. They all have the band and instruments at the center of attention and there's something magic about watching the band working I cant explain.
@waterox73

@@animusic432 💯 As humans we talk all the time about "chemistry" between people as it applies in romantic relationships; that's pretty much what happens in a great band of 2 or more artists also, I think, or, a cast of actors, etcetera. You can feel that intangible cohesiveness and reverberation of energies bouncing off one another almost like a taste in your mouth. I used to go to lots of shows and judged a good or bad one based partly on that quality alone, synchronicity!

This was my favorite album when I was in high school, and it's still wild to me that a song like this could have been a hit in any era. Suzanne didn't chase any trends, her music was defiantly personal and wasn't produced within an inch of its life to try and fit in with waht was getting played on the radio. And yet "Luka" and "Solitude Standing" resonated with a wide audience because the stories Suzanne told were so relatable, because there was so much compassion and humanity in her songs. I don't believe nostalgia is a good thing but I can't help but admit I miss that time, when she and like-minded artists like Kate Bush and Jane Siberry were accomplishing so much (and, for a time, successors like Tori Amos and Toni Childs). Apart from the occasional one-off success like Phoebe Bridgers, I don't know if that would be possible now.

In short, she has reached that level of enlightenment. The lyrics are amazing and is a reflection of her alter ego being at one with her fears and openness to the quieting of one's mind.

Remember waiting for the train to Munich on small german bahnfof near Ingolstadt. I had couple of hours ,remember sipping cofee , smoking ciggies and listening to Suzanne cassette on my Sony Walkam in the train station Coffee shop. It was 1987.

the best of the underrated 80's folk-ish underlaying movement: suzanne vega, bruce cockburn, kate bush, lloyd cole and the commotions, the dream academy, the go betweens, aztec camera, indigo girls, prefab sprout... it was there finding its own way - while everyone was slam dancing to punk and new wave, these folks were keeping it real in the undertones...

I can totally see how grunge music took the spotlight with such great inspiring alternative pop tracks such as this I love how it walks through like a hike over a hill & colours the soundscape with melodic runs & bright striking chords. Persevering confident & modest

... but it's interesting the (presumably younger) fellow sees the connection. This is 10 years before grunge but the minimal production and stripped-down focus on the song show they are in the same tradition. Without the mullets and balloon pants, this could be from 1993.

@@lllordllloydyes I can hear a spikey grunge-ness to this song, the cold lyric, the dissonance.

Well, I don't believe there's anything like introvert or extrovert. You might disagree with me but let me tell you why I have this opinion. Actually, I believe, If you're hesitant taking to people particularly girls, It's because you're shy and haven't ever exposed yourself to such an environment. Sometimes it's fear that makes you reluctant to go out and converse with people. Fear that They'll criticize you or mock you for multiple reasons. It may be 'cuz you failed some exam or something else. You know the reasons better!! If someone isn't habitual attending parties or other social gathering doesn't mean He has got an aversion for these but 'cuz either of the Aforementioned reasons or 'cuz That very event or party doesn't suit that individual. If people aren't nice to me Why the hell should I visit them to converse?? No matter what the hell they think of me I fucking don't care!! Whether they call me so called "Introvert" or anything worse than that I fucking don't care!! Afterall, They will come to me and kneel before me and will even be ready to lick my shoes for their benefits. At that point of time I'll fucking kick these scoundrels away. My words might seem aggressive to you but It's the pain inside my heart which has taken manifestation.

@@deepakjoshi823 Is your point that being consumed in your own world (whether school, work or personal relationships) is incompatible with the traditional classifications of introvert and extrovert? I hope your pain has eased in the month since you responded to Peggy's comment (itself posted 9 years after Suzanne's team published this studio recording). Whoever Suzanne wrote Solitude Standing and Luca about, whether autobiographical or not, it's a reflection of the struggles of others if not reflective of your own lived experience.
