Personal finance expert Suze Orman wants Wendy Gonzalez to think bigger when it comes to her money goals. The Los Angeles-based millennial earns $80,000 a year working as a logistics supervisor for an auto tech company and eventually wants to make $95,000.
“Why limit yourself to $95,000 a year?” Orman asks, reacting to CNBC Make It’s Millennial Money episode that features Gonzalez.
Orman also wishes the millennial hadn’t splurged on a BMW, which sets her back $720 a month. In addition to the car payment, Gonzalez spends about $90 on gas, putting her monthly transportation costs at $810. “What you deserve is a life of financial independence, not some car,” Orman says.
There is good news: “She’s saving money, she’s working ... and she’s making coffee at home,” says Orman, who thinks that buying coffee is like “peeing $1 million down the drain.” Gonzalez sets aside about $1,000 a month. She saves in a Roth IRA, high-yield savings account and a brokerage account. Gonzalez has around $25,000 saved in a high-yield savings account, which she has earmarked for a down payment one day.
Watch Orman’s full reaction to Gonzalez’s spending and savings habits.

People like Wendy bought into the idea that "life is short, enjoy it". I wonder what she will think when she's poor and unable to pay medical bills at 65 and wishes she rode the market instead of riding in a BMW for a few years.

I fell into this trap unfortunately. I'm 24 now with two years left on my car loan. Thankfully, I bought a Honda and not a BMW & my income has substantially increased since I originally purchased the car. Still, I consider it a mistake I've learned from. Financial independence is worth way more than a shiny new car will ever be.

My car got power windows, sun roof, power seats etc. and runs great! She takes home around $3,500 (I don’t know how that is, I ran the numbers through the Calculator and making 80K she should be taking home around $4750.00 after taxes... ) But would’ve been best if her payment was $350.00 or less on $3500.00

I saw some of her investments and she would have definitely gone down a lot on her portfolio if she was still holding on to those stocks. My biggest investments regrets was not investing more on Amazon and opting to put more money into a mutual fund I had purchased at the beginning of February. Thankfully am only down about 2% on my Roth but I could have avoided the loss by using the mutual fund money on Amazon. My 401k and HSA are another story. mutual funds are down a lot and those two accounts only allow for the purchase of mutual funds. I rebalance my new contributions to take advantage of lower prices but am definitely glad that I started my job six months ago and the balance on those accounts are low.

Yes, she needs to work her way up to experience cars. Besides, BMWs are expensive to maintain, they break down more than average and are overrated. I'm 57 and have $1.1 million in retirement accounts even after the crash. We paid our house off 3 years ago. We drive used 2004 and 2014 Camrys and have only bought brakes, oil and gas.

Buying or leasing any BMW is crazy unless you can write off the car payments! Buy a 2 year old Hyundai and pay cash. Then put the money you're saving in a Roth IRA (if you qualify).

I totally agree Suze I don't believe in purchasing vehicles new the deprecate in value time you drive it off the lot. I purchase a use vehicle in great condition and my car note is 306.12 I trying to pay it off this year.

"what is it now??? It went up and back down and you're probably back at 14K, so learn from this experience" if she was at 14k at the bottom and held low-cost index funds she'd be back up to 20k lol

Suze made some great points. Wendy, you're going to make it either way because you do have drive. Just remember that the YOLO and I deserve it attitude in general is just an excuse for people to spend money. It's why so many people are BROKE and in DEBT. Getting rid of debt frees up income to invest and save for the big items such as car. Also, an emergency fund is a must before you get too heavy into investing.

Buying the car was dumb, but she also got a second job to make the payments. Buy whatever you want as long as you come up with extra money to pay for it. If you wanna spend an extra $10k a year you better have a way to earn an extra $10k a year.

LOL. My sister is recognized as one of the wealthiest women in California. And everybody in our refugee family of 10 are all successful. The Dream Vision car upon graduating was a BMW for her, and quite a few other siblings in my family. And they fulfilled that vision...and moved on to loftier goals that got them into exclusive zip codes. Was a fancy car my Dream Vision? No. But there is some utility in scraping and scrimping and getting.
