Just found your channel. Good review. I bought an 08 DL 1000 4 years ago for commuting. Once I started taking it off road I realized 1) how fun it is and 2) the V Strom is huge. So I got a KLX 250 for the trails. Going from riding the KLX to the DL 1000 off road is like trying to ride a greased pig! Here in New England we have narrow single and double track through thick forest with mud on the surface and rocks underneath. Sometimes it's silty sand that will suck your bike down like quicksand. Even with a bash plate and engine guards the V Strom would get trashed. But the DL 1000 is a superb sport tourer with the capability to explore gravel roads. One other additional upgrade: a sidestand plate. Really helps balance the bike on soft surfaces.

Thanks for your message. I agree about the dirt capability, or lack there of with the Vstrom - I have a dedicated range of dirt tools, the DRZ400, and BMW Sertao G650GS, as well as the KLR650. All pending reviews so please stay tuned - my Sertao had a very short side stand so I added a hockey puck (way easier to find up there by you than here in San Diego) That raised it and helped create a bigger footprint for soft sand. Thanks for your suggestion! Stay safe - Nik

Hi Jon! Thanks for the message! Glad to hear the Vstrom is treating you well. You wont believe it, but just last weekend I re-purchased the black Vstrom I had when you and I went out, from the guy that I sold it to a year ago. He is looking for a cruiser and I recognized my old bike on Craigslist so I snatched it back. I like the Vstroms too much. If you are ever back in town please hit me up and we can go for a weekend ride, and when we organize a quick trip through Baja I will let you know. If you ever need help with planning or suggestions - you know where to turn to - there are so many opportunities for great riding near you now. Stay safe and be well in the meantime!

I have a DR650 for hardcore Colorado mountain passes and the DL650 for traveling including light off road exploration. I've ridden all my life mostly on Harleys plus various dirt bikes. I chose both of these bikes in part for the predictable power bands (ok the lower power). I don't want to be surprised. Reliability is next on my list and the affordability is shocking. I compare the DL650 to the BMW GS750. A very nice ride with proven reliability. Drop a Suzuki and you swear a bit and keep riding. Drop a BMW and I spend the rest of the ride calculating the cost to repair. At 68 I am starting to downsize my bikes and it's surprising how freeing it is to ride a smaller bike. I still love my Harley but it's the Suzuki's I ride. 650? It's a great V-twin engine with more than adequate power for my riding style.

I do prefere the 650 over the 1000 in this 1 gen mod, l do think it runs smoother. On the highway the 1000 do how ever shine... Alot:)). Its a personal refrance i guess. Great review of a fantastic bike. I cant imagine the vstrom not be able to do whatever a GS ore a GSA can do. I got shad hard panniers with the bike when l bought it, but l rather have soft luggage, but l cant trow it away. Tnx for sharing sir. Love that red one.

Thanks for the support and sharing your opinion - I just can never let myself get the smaller engine when a larger one is readily available. Stay tuned for more videos - we publish regularly and thanks again for the support.

Wonderful review. Here are the essentials I use: Skidplate, Bark Busters, Foot Pegs, Engine Guards, Radiator Guards. For wheels, depending on how deep into the bush you go, but a spoked wheel 21" wheel is something to consider. A headlight guard is also something that should be considered.

As well as welding rod holders you can buy a tractor manual holder from tractor supply to hold tools etc. Shinko 705s are great for packed dirt, but suck for anything else. They are at best 90/10 tire. Mitas E07 or Heidinau k60s are more of a true 50/50 tire.
@pegasusmotorcycletours
@pegasusmotorcycletours 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the Tip! Welding rod holders have been increasingly harder to find at Lowes and HD - at least the ones I like most. And yes, the shinkos don't have too much lateral support since the knobs are perfectly in line and not staggered, but I think at that point when it starts to make the difference, it's usually the rider's limitation rather than the tires - for me they are simply excellent looking and performing tires... for the price point which is significantly lower than the Kendas. Thanks so much for the input - I really appreciate it - please stay tuned for a review of a sport touring bike releasing tonight!

Thanks for the video. I'm still in doubt: GS, Stelvio, V-Strom (for 2up riding with gear)... Moneywise I'd say the V-strom, but I like a shaft drive. That's (for me) the downside of the V-strom.
@pegasusmotorcycletours
@pegasusmotorcycletours 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there and glad to have you. Thanks for your comment. The Stelvio is gorgeous and more on the luxury touring level Id say, for the reasons mentioned. The shaft drive is great since its largely maintenance free, and if you are touring 2 up, the chain stretches more requiring more frequent maintenance (and the sprockets wear quicker). On the flip side, the weight is a factor, and the Stelvio is pricier to own and harder to equip. Test ride both and see what you prefer - definitely stick to the bigger Vstrom though. These Suzukis keep their value and sell immediately once they pop up on the market. The GS is very heavy for my taste - with all the luggage options you are nearing 600 pounds - not suitable for serious ADV touring (solo bikers) since it would be very difficult to pick up. It's also very expensive to own and maintain, and parts and accessories also are quite pricey - but no one I knew that owned one said later that they regretted it. Ask yourself how much dirt ( and how difficult) you intend to ride? Domestically or Intl? The Suzuki uses lots of parts generic to many Japanese bikes and easy to source. Thanks so much for the comment - please consider supporting my channel by subscribing so that you can get notified when other reviews in the ADV world of motorcycles come out. Good luck - Nik

I really like the older generation V-Strom 1000. The dual exhaust works so much better with rear bags. I also like the added fuel capacity. The beak on the new one is just a visual thing, but I personally find it ugly, and silly. Of course I don't think any V-Strom will win any beauty contests. That is not what the bike is about. Value is their winning feature. You can pick up a good used first generation DL1000 for less than $6K. I rather do that than spend $25k on a new GS1200 and risk damaging it. That's just me.

how do you feel about the V strom 650 older models?
@pegasusmotorcycletours
@pegasusmotorcycletours Жыл бұрын
I've never owned the 650 vstrom but did own that engine in the SV version. I found it to be underpowered for my taste. I sold it within a week and bought me an SV 1000 instead. One of my all time favorites. I've owned three 1000s. That's the same engine that's in the vstrom. However, the 650 is lighter so better for dirt road applications.

I have finally let it go - in hopes to snatch the new one. It's exciting to see the new design changes, although I am typically conservative on the tech and gadget array of offerings all the new bikes seem to be coming out with.

Are you still actively riding your '07? I have an 11 650 that works fine but I just feel like it's getting old.

I am not actually - I fist sold it to a gent, and then a year later saw it up for sale so I purchased it back from him and ended up selling it again simply cause I have no space or time for so many bikes. But you can expect to get well over 100k miles out of it - it was the engine of the year in the 2000s.

Hi, skid plate alluminium or steel? Thanks
@jonbomb400

I'm the owner of the red strom. It had an aluminum skid plate, but currently awaiting a custom steel one, as the aluminum plate did not survive a tough Arkansas single track!
@pegasusmotorcycletours
@pegasusmotorcycletours 5 жыл бұрын
The black one has a SW Motec Steel skid plate, however I prefer the style of the red one due to the fact that it is easier to get to the oil filter.

Everything is possible. The biggest thing I've transported on a bike, successfully, is a door size mirror. So yes, gold bag for sure.

Vstrom is a better buy then the BMW GS

I dare say it can do as much, for a third of the money. My problem with the BMW is that when my partner crashed his near Moab, the dealership was closed Sundays, and Mondays, so we were stranded for 4 days in terrible weather waiting for a simple part to arrive from Ebay. Can't imagine how long that wait would have been in Patagonia, or Alaska.

I tried naming the video with a properly descriptive title so as to avoid any misunderstanding in expectation. I hope you found the video useful. This was the very first review I did over three years ago so my style has evolved and improved. I've since reviewed nearly every competitor in the adv thumper market. I appreciate the support. Cheers. Nim

The question is preposterous. Of course it's a capable ADV touring motorcycle. Who says otherwise? It's actually one of the best. Dude, your entire video is about dropping your bike and running into walls. Maybe you're just a crap rider. I never drop my bike - on road, off road, whatever.
