This isn't nearly as common as people think, mainly happens on poorly maintained bikes run far too hot, too many times, or run over 85-88mph for extended trips. Eventually it happens to them all, but not common under 25k miles according to most forums. Replace the chain, and tensioner if worried, check every 10-12k miles(@3 oil changes. I use synth), it's easier than all this BS. You can't LOOK at a chain to see if it's worn, unless it's too late, use the control marks, or relative length bolt vs barrel, or count the 22 notches on the tensioner for rough safety est. It helps not to bog the bike down often, there's a lot of torque on these chains, and tensioner only goes 1 direction as chain wear happens in 1/1000th's"...not a cert mechanic, just worked on my own bikes my whole life, and put the effort in.

that cam chain isnt worn out....i have the stock cam chain 33000 miles on it before the cam chain tensioner failed in the same way you just need to do what you did....that moddified tensioner will last the life of that bike

+jessie labudde Indeed the Chain should last, I probably made this before I had that knowledge and forget to edit it out. Unfortunately the previous owner rode it around like this and the lose chain did some damage. Bits of the adjuster ground off and were floating around in the oil and went to bad places. Piston is now scored/damaged and the cylinder, even the cam journals. Its a shame someone let it get that far.

What causes this to happen with such low mileage?

The adjuster is almost at full extension from brand new, they start to buckle in the middle. I replaced mine at 72,000kms just!!! in time.

9500 miles only on this engine, no need for a new chain it is still in spec. However, in many cases yes replacing the chain is a good idea if you want correct timing and your chain is too worn. Even if you replace the chain with a new one, this modification is eventually needed or the standard tensioner will fly apart after a new chain wears too much again.

i think when the chain is worn out it stretch'es . if you replace the chain ,the tensioner will be correct. i dont believe that you need to extend the tensioner if i did i would weld it myself ,its not necessary folks. do as you will. fix it put it back the way it worked for 23 thousand miles folks! i meet the guy that bought it new he didnt do nothin to it .broke the shoes literally both! drum was rusted.float was stuck tube on bottom of carb was clogged and he replaced the rear brake arm position to help smash the shoes harder, until one day he hit the front brake and laid it down. i have been like a detective on this bike from hell .new battery new metzler on back then i decide this thing sounds like shit lol one reason ? is they get louder as they heat up.it sounds real good and all the sudden crap be careful yawl. thankyou for your come back son .ps you did good and helped me. i have some vids on kezzlwerkz kezzlwerkz on u tube i am also creator of WARRIORCYCLES the best damn motorized bike in the world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always replace the cam-chain ! Replacing the tensioner is not a solution. After a new cam chain, my tensioner was ready to go again: 11 teeth out. Check cam chain every 20.000 km

Agreed, however this chain only had 9500 miles on it, chain was still in spec so there was no need to replace it. I'd rather have piece of mind with this modification knowing that my tensioner will not fly apart again. The original tensioner design is a very poor one in my opinion. It flying apart aided in severe top end damage, I'd rather not have it happen again later down the road.

@@MetricMotorcycleMadness Its not just your opinion its a known fact by anyone that knows this bike. The tensioner is a faulty design that fails way before the chains life. Go to the forums dedicated to this bike for 15 years. On other motorcycles replacing the chain may be necessary but not on this bike. Thanks for this video and others involving the ls650/s40.
