This is my way of replacing the stator in my 2007 DL1000, without draining the oil. Should be the same for 2002-2012 models. If your charging system is not working, then you probably need to change the stator. I put it off and tried other fixes, but it was the stator. Just replace it, it's fairly easy. Also, with these Vstrom's, you will probably have to fix the magnets on the magneto. They tend to come unglued and out of position. There are other videos specific to that repair, although I do address it here as well.
This is my first attempt at a video and I'm not super tech savvy, so if it sucks, deal with it! :)

nice video really, I could just use some clarifications of pieces that fall off! i have a bushing about 18mm O.D, x 18mm deep that I can't place. Doh... All of my magnets were off! 2009 DL1000

Only if you're having charging problems and the magnet has come loose.

2009 vstrom dl650 is same procedure. One thing, is there supposed to be a lot of oil on the stator? My bike ran on battery only so oil present did not affect the crankshaft position sensor inside. It can read the TDC magnet position fine. If the area gets filled with oil ( stator was saturated ) can that affect current production? Your bike is easier removal. Voltage rectifier is located under tank and air breather assembly. Wires to stator goes through motor area to other side then up to rectifier. Pain in the tushy. Thanks can you respond about the oil amount?

Yes it's saturated in oil. It's inside the crankcase with the oil.

Think this would be doable for someone that doesn't know much of what they are doing? Just picked one up last week and it needs a bunch of work to make it ride-able without concern.

Well if you have some sort of mechanical aptitude you should be fine. Just think about it as one big 3d puzzle. Pay close attention to how you take things apart, and put back together in reverse order. I've been known to write down my disassembly order to be sure it goes back together correctly.

@@zaneodem444 Video was a huge help. I rewatched it 3 times, I had to cut the seal for the wires as the new one I ordered did not include it and I couldn't find a replacement for it. But it worked well cutting it and applying a thin sealing rubber epoxy on the outside of it. For those that watch this later, Zane's video is spot on. On the stormtrooper forums, everyone mentions adding JB Weld to secure the magnets from sliding left and right, as they won't fall out due to the cover. Do Not Use quick setting, use the 24 hour or longer and do not put it under the magnets against the case, place along the center line in an even amount, on each magnet equally and make sure magnets are equally spaced. Be careful as they fragment VERY easily. If you can, lean the bike at 45 degrees against something with front brake clamped like Zane does. I used a stretchy tie-down to wrap around it and it held. The leaning is After applying the JB weld, do not put the stator in until the magnets with the jeweled has set and cured for 24 hours. This will prevent any contamination during the setting process. You do not need to do this but it will ensure magnet drive does not occur later. My situation was 2005 DL1000. 4 of 6 magnets were touching all but 3 of the stator coils were blackened, 2 of the other three were slightly burned. 42,041 Miles at time of purchasing bike and replacing parts. I will also be ordering a clutch basket as it also is expected to be going out by remark of prior owner. Zane, thanks again for the awesome video!

Thanks for the video! I think I'm having the same issue with my 2006 DL1000 and your video will be a great guide. Could you let me know where you got the new gasket? I was able to find the aftermarket electrosport stator but not a good link to a gasket. Also, the red silcone you put on the plug spot, is that RTV Silicone, and where do the two pieces that fall off go?

I purchased the gasket at my local motorcycle dealer (Pro Caliber). You can also get it by searching the part number online (GASKET, MAGNETO COVER 11483-02F10). Yes, it's red hi-temp RTV silicone. In my video, I actually put the spacer in the wrong place. The spacer and pin are what fell out and they both go together on the bottom gear. Pin goes through the middle of the gear, and the spacer goes over the pin. I already had it back together when I realized I filmed it incorrectly, so I tried to edit around my mistake, but you can plainly see it. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for watching! Are you still running the factor clutch basket. I need to replace my basket. Got 40,000 miles. I got a recall in the mail for the rectifier. Dealer replace it.

No I replaced it a few years ago with the Werks basket. Here is their website werksparts.com/ mine has 56,000 miles

Recommendations for someone else to go to for the clutch basket, hit 40k miles on my 05 and nothings ever been replaced on it. Just bought it.
