In this video Suzuki Sensei explains that there are (at least) two types of ushiro-geri (rear/back kick): centripetal and centrifugal. In the case of the former, which looks a bit like a back kick upper cut (translator's impression), ones torso rotates in the opposite direction to the kick (twist left and shoot the right leg). In the centrifugal rear kick the torso rotates in the same direction as the kick (twist right and shoot the right leg) which creates a kick looking more like a roundhouse kick or hook (translator's impression). He further explains the advantage and disadvantage of each. The centripetal rear upper-cut type does not cover so much distance since you are not adding the width of your torso to the extension of your leg, but it is easier and speedier to return to the standard guard position without doing a 180 degree spin. The centrifugal kick on the other hand extends out of the rearward twisted side of the body so you add the width of your body to the length of your kick and can kick further backwards as a result. But the drawback is that to return to the standard guards position you generally have to spin 180 degrees, and may well be more likely to wobble as a result. Suzuki sensei recommends the cetripetal short rear uppercut version (as does the teacher in the translators dojo). ↙(_ _)↘
