I get why people hate Nam Do San character. It's because he's not rich, he's not successful and he's not you typical kdrama hero. I've watched countless kdrama whereby the storyline revolves around the leads tht bind with their childhood story. In this case, people are swoon with Jipyeong because he's the one tht wrote the letter and knows dalmi while dalmi hv no idea at all. And here we got Do san tht trying to be the lead by continously support and encourage dalmi. You guys, also see Jipyeong helping dalmi multiple times. But hv you guys open your eyes, tht it's Do san tht doin all the things? He is not perfect and he did failed many times but tht's why this drama is call Start Up a youth coding romance. Do san is like us, the reality of our life , no matter how many effort we put sometimes we will failed but we will strive to do better and never give up! Thanks Dosan and thanks writernim ❤️

Ji Peyong was never on Dalmi’s side, he was always under Dalmi waiting for her to fall so he can catch her where as Dosan was always on or by her side making sure that she remains on her feet and not to fall but even if Dalmi falls, Dosan is prepared to fall with her. They’re a well matched twosome. Ji Pyeong denied knowing and have feelings for Dalmi so I don’t see why people thinks that he deserves or should end up with Dalmi🤷‍♀️

Since Ep2 I'm rooting for Nam Dosan because he's so kindhearted and he always love and respect Dalmi not to mention that he also wants to help her grandmother if ever she's gonna be blind. 😔❤️ It's also sad people misunderstood his character just because he's not perfect you guys know that nobody's perfect right we also make mistakes, we learn from it cuz it's part of growing up. 😟 And btw Start Up is not all about romance it represents youth and growth so pls enjoy the message of the plot don't be so obsessed with love triangle. 😒

There's one scene that I thought highlights how much of a respectful and loving person Dosan is, I think it was in the morning, he got nagged by his father and left the house, you can hear the door slamming. He went back into the house to apologise to his parents and explained that the wind was too strong and slammed the door before he could close it properly. He cares about his parents a lot and did not want to hurt their feelings.

I love this show because I’m so sick of the CEO and poor girl storyline, or the over-romanticized childhood trauma. Like ok, he was an orphan and that’s sad, but what about the present. And the irony of this is that JP has let go of his childhood trauma but JP fans want Dal Mi to hold onto her childhood trauma so she can end up with him. But in reality, she needs to let go of the letters because they are tied with death, divorce and it was a way for her to cope. And the things about JP fans are that they can’t see his flaws but will degrade Do San at every moment, while even though I like Do San I can see that he is extremely flawed and will never trick myself into thinking that he isn’t. But he’s also young and inexperienced, while JP had years to seize up the opportunity to make a move. Dal mi is not the prize that he deserves, no one deserves anyone, but it's who is willing to step up and be upfront about their feelings He's simply too late, and that does not make Dal Mi dumb or the writers. It all falls on him and the grandma. One decision can have a long impact.

I don't understand why Do San character gets so criticized, he wasn't the typical/usual lead but that's what made this drama more enjoyable for me, he wasn't perfect, confident and made mistakes...it was awesome seeing his character development and this is honestly my favorite drama character of all time. The writer did an amazing job with this and I really felt like I could relate to him at time and watching him overcome things makes me think that whenever I have troubles I can also work hard to overcome them if I don't give up 💜

I know I'm late, but i also think it was SO obvious who Dalmi was going to choose. Like you said, JP had three years to make a move but didn't, when he was finally ready, Dosan was back and he knew he didn't stand a chance because Dalmi was still in love with him. She likes men with big hands, because Dosan had big hands. She named the car Tarzan, after a story Dosan told her. To me it was pretty obvious. I don't like rooting for second leads because I know I'll get disappointed. I like JPs character, but them as a couple... I just didn't see it

I love Kdrama's writer nowadays to bring character like dosan, watched drama since full house, loved kdrama since 2009, it's awful to see male characters who denied his feeling, rich guy type, who like poor girl. we had a lot character like that, that character is not related to real life because nobody perfect in this world. Dosan is so charming with his imperfection and innocence. I watch Start up because so many thing that we can learn from this drama. Dosan is getting bashed so much after episode 12 came out. I wish everyone would realize that the best stories have character growth and the best character growth happens with the hardest challenges which means confronting your own flaws!!! jipyeong was an already-well written character. he barely had any flaws apart from the way he can be very blunt sometimes because of his job & when his defence is up. dosan however, had a lot to work through because he hasn't grown up and has a lot to learn since we first met him at end ep1. I think that's beautiful, because it's very realistic. it's about his journey as an adult who has just passed the quarter life (a lot of real young adults still struggle in their late 20s). A lot of us haven't got it quite figured out. We will thou, by a certain age as more life experience shapes us. I think that's like DoSan, someone who has a very relatable development. I think that's why I've always liked his character despite being far from perfect.

Lol sorry to the peeps who have already read this comment under replies, but this dalmi-dosan relationship is shallow/forced/ random narrative plus dosan slander needs to be answered. The tandem of Dalmi and HJP is literally the more "forced" out of the two guys. HJP was forced to start writing those letters because of grandma. I know you'll say he loved her that's why he kept writing, but if anything he liked having a companion to write to, definitely not love. Also there are several instances where HJP knows exactly how to write flowery lines (letters, texts), with words like "sail of without a map" being just an elegant metaphor to him. Those very same words/metaphor mean something very real to Dalmi and now to dosan (ep 12) as well. When dalmi chooses HJP initially in her convo with grandma, she explains how she cares and feels grateful to the writer of those letters, but it's this odd guy in front of her who makes her heart race. Dalmi- HJP : mentee-mentor/ older brother even Dalmi-Dosan: Two young people, stuck in a rut, but after finding someone who truly believes in them and cheers them on unconditionally, treats them like an equal, win together, lose together, make mistakes together, cry together, and sacrifice for each other. They've both learned so much from their interactions. They encourage one another to dream bigger. Even after being hurt by the other, they can't completely break away. Dalmi even says that when he seems too perfect it makes her uncomfortable, so with all his innocence, big brain and heart she also cherishes that he has shortcomings. So in what world was the dalmi-dosan relationship forced? Life is a continuum of the past, present and future. The plot is clear that dosan is her present and future. I get that dosan is not your type of guy, that's fine, however to call him out as a waste of space due to his ineptitude in certain matters while blindly hailing HJP is very immature. Both characters have flaws, HJP even with his maturity can be rude, arrogant, and petty. Do I still like him? Of course, he is adds another dimension to the story (of what it was like to be an underdog, managing young impulsive people). Then why can't you do the same for do san. That boy is too damn lovable anyways.This show is about youth putting themselves out there, chasing their dreams, falling in love, making mistakes, learning from them and growing into a much better version. So don't be ridiculous, calm the f down, be respectful of others opinions and just enjoy the show.

Yeah I don't know why so many JP fans say that JP was only saying the truth. Yes sometimes he is especially after they entered sandbox. But from the first time JP went to the office to ask for a huge favour from NDS, what did he do? Untill earlier episodes, jipyeong's team were hoping and rooting Dalmi and jipyeong to end up together but now they know that's never gonna happen, they're blaming the writer for the script. Like LMAO. This is a drama, from the beginning we all knew it's DoDal end game, you should've accepted it and watch it, or just don't watch. Also, people be hating on Dosan because of his character and that hjp's personality matches more with Dalmi, let's see for the coming episodes. You people talk as if the episodes ends on 12!! Drama name itself explains everything "STARTUP". Dosan will realise his dreams and goals and will become a hotshot soon. We got so many to learn from Dosan's life. I know we have different perspective of watching drama but I'd say jipyeong's team romanticizes and focuses much more on childhood trauma, his background story, letters rather than the main motive of the drama. Think about it, it's Dosan and Dalmi who helped each other grew till now. Suzy before meeting the real Dosan was just wandering around. But when the real Dosan gave her the ball which says "follow your dream" , she then mustered up herself and decided to join Sandbox for Startup. And Dosan inorder to solve the misunderstanding of the "cool first love" will work hard to turn Dalmi's dream into reality.

I honestly really like your insight on this. I agree that people who side with HJP relate more to his backstory and the letters and love but the drama itself is called "Start-Up" not some romance type drama. You pointed out that Do San and Dal Mi both pushed each other to become the person they are today and that is a good point. I really like how this drama made the MAIN lead who is actually Do San very vulnerable, innoncent, and just someone who isn't aware of a lot of things. I think that is why people like HJP even more but to me, I like Do San cuz I can relate well to him and he is the perfect example of what the youth is today.

Start-Up has is about a drama starting two YOUNG people in starting a business. Never once did it say Do San or Dal Mi were old and experienced. All these toxic HJP stans are literally hating Do San's character. Do San is yearsss younger than HJP and so is Dal Mi. This drama focuses on how young people makes mistakes and they learn and grow as it's apart of life. I swear all these HJP stans attack Do San cuz he wasn't the one who wrote the letters but honestly, did Dal Mi ever have any romantic involvement or even realization for HJP? Don't get me wrong though because I love HJP and I feel for him. I love his character and his interactions with the grandma along with me wishing him true happiness as he truly deserves it. Plus when DS first told JP that he's falling for DM, JP denied his own feelings of jealousy. He denied it when Grandmother asked too. So when he couldn't even admit to himself his feelings for DM then he lost the right to claim first dib. Letters from 15 years ago when DM was only 13 doesn't count. Especially considering that he used a fake identity, never had to meet in person, so he probably felt more comfortable saying things in the letters that he wouldn't say face to face. So the fake DS that the tweenie DM fell for never existed in JP in real life. Just look at how he reacts to her "sail off without a map" sentiment. He said he gets it, but when DS tried to put it into practice JP vehemently oppose it. So he says one thing but believes/does the opposite.

Just because Dosan and Dal Mi share romantic scenes doesn't make them a better couple lmao And that's the thing that people don't like about the script, that if they were going to make Dosan and Dalmi end up together since the beginning, they could do a better job at developing their relationship and Dosan's character. It isn't that "Ji Peyong deserves her" No one said that, she's not a prize. But in fact, Ji Pyeong's character and personality match Dal Mi a lot better than Do San, and he developed better too as a person. Do San's character didn't and the writers of the script tried to force this romance of Dalmi and Dosan by only showing romantic scenes between them, and not with Ji Pyeong, because if they did, it's obviously going to create even more controversy than it already does.

HJP just realized he likes dalmi when NDS is getting closer to her and openly shows his love to dalmi. HJP never thought about dalmi romantically even when he wrote the letter to her, his intention that time was not love. So imo, it's NDS who falls in love with dalmi first! As for dalmi, the wiriter of the letter is her 1st love, and she thought it was dosan, she got closer and got used to the real dosan, since she thought dosan was the writer, she unconciously lowered her standard of her lover and falls in love with the real dosan.
