The 1st Terminator aired in 84... DB started airing in 86, so it's pretty cool that the creator included it as a token to the Terminator and Arnold. xD I personally like when references to other popular stuff exist, some people classify that as stealing ideas but it's nonsense, it was just a fun reference.

You're right about the Terminator reference, as the first Terminator was released in 1984, the same year the Dragon Ball manga debuted. Akira Toriyama loved movies and would unabashedly reference many different pop culture icons in his works. Much like how the original Drunken Master starring Jackie Chan was a major inspiration for Dragon Ball, including Roshi's alter ego.

I'm from Peru and I've seen these dragon ball episodes 25 years ago and it's curious to see the show in English now with Suzy, I always loved Dragon ball and it's nice to watch it again, so many memories 🥹 By the way, this version is the explicit version, there are scenes there weren't in Spanish version long ago, so enjoy it! Yes, they showed the explicit scenes here in latin america, but they were not dubbed, the audio was in japanese. Also this english version has some translations softened or with other meaning different from the japanese. BTW im from Chile.

For those of you who can't read Japanese (and can't quite understand KZbin's translation), Metalitron's dorky behaviour here is actually an homage. In the Japanese dialog, he's saying, "Daijou-bui" instead of "Victory". That's a combination of 'daijobu' (meaning 'OK' or 'alright') and 'bui', which is how many Japanese folks say the letter V -- so he's saying, "Daijou-V!" That's a reference to an actual advert aired on Japanese TV in the 80s, in which Schwarzenegger himself (affectionately known as Schwa-chan) did exactly the same thing.

Yes this was a direct and totally assumed reference to The Terminator. And Dragon Ball is not the only anime of that era who did it. There's an episode of Dirty Pair where the heroines also have to face a Terminator. That's all I know about specifically dedicated episodes, but of course, there were multiple other references to it in various mangas through the years. Mangakas generally love to reference pop culture elements they like. It generally happens in comedies, or at least in humorous moments, as it falls under the parody exception of the copyright's law.

The battle against Major Metallitron (or Sgt. Metálico as he was known in Spanish) was one of my absolute FAVORITES when I was a kid, I still like it, TBH! Glad you enjoyed this episode, too! Yes, Goku is a kid. But obviously cannot be seen as an ordinary one. What special about Goku is the abilities that he have at his age, not the age itself. I mean one is free to emphasize the age in order to express how special Goku is. But if you simply focus on the abilities, in my opinion, if you lose to someone is stronger l, there is nothing to be ashamed of, and the stronger one also have nothing to be proud of, like if you lose to someone who is weaker, isn’t that absurd?

Hey Suzy, did you notice that Major Metallitron's targeting computer identified Goku as "Looks: Alien"? Also, the Dragon Ball manga was released the same year as the original The Terminator film. This is a direct reference to The Terminator by Toriyama, who loved Western Sci Fi!

In most martial arts movies experts do not use the same move more than once because the opponent may find an opening or weakness in the move after once or twice. Probably why goku was reluctant to use Kamehameha a second time

@@Ciffer-1998 goku doesn't learn much at all. But he's quite smart when it comes to fighting. The Kamehameha is like his ultimate move that he falls back on when things get sticky. It's just bad practice to keep using it on the same enemy. You want to keep them guessing, not looking for opportunities in moves they've seen already
