It easy to get surrounded by shields when all your troops are confined into a small space and have no formation. The shields spread themselves around them and surrounded them. It use to happen a lot back in ancient history.

The Battle of Cannae they had a ridiculous superior force and lost 75,000 in minutes. After losing their commanders early into the battle their leaderless army fell right into a trap. It's kind of horrific to think they were just being hacked down, packed so tight together they couldnt even raise their arms to defend themselves

Episodes 9 and 10 of each season are just always amazing😮.I think it took several months to film this episode. The horses in the scene where John pulls out the sword they are all actually running towards him. And the same with the one-shot horses and people running everywhere. Don't do what Ramsey wants; falling for the emotional reaction. His delay in killing him got Jon within archer range giving Jon no choice but to flee back and maybe get shot, or go forward and be shot. Jon, being so incensed at the killing of his little brother, again did what Ramsey wanted as it was for sure they could get him or his horse if he charged. If he had delayed 1 more day the outcome would have saved many lives; however, Sansa was not fully truthful about the help she had written for, likely because she was not certain Peter would come. Unreal battle and best ever on a television program imo.

What a big moment for you two. Getting to finally drop another Game Of Thrones reaction. Great episode but a lot of things fans were frustrated with like Jon being so dumb probably why they killed off The Blackfish he was the war strategist, Sansa not telling Jon about the Knights Of The Vale, Wun Wun could've easily broken the encirclement strategy. If Jon was smart he would've just sent Ghost to grab Rickon that's what I would've done.

How is Ghost gonna run into the middle of the battlefield and save Rickon? Makes no sense With the Knights of the Vale, they were encamped close by as Baelish was expecting Sansa to ask for help. Sansa had sent a raven but by the time the battle started didn’t know they were coming and couldn’t tell Jon. She had the chance to tell Jon she asked Baelish for the help and maybe more men were coming but she didn’t But as someone else pointed out, if the Knights of the Vale were there to even up the numbers from the start Ramsey could simply stay inside Winterfell and force them to siege taking years. He met them on the battlefield knowing his army was much bigger

@Fett411 The wolf thing is just for fun. In the books they are far more important like Jon is supposed to be able to warg into Ghost. It makes little sense for Ramsey not to know about this huge army entering the North in the first place but for arguments sake Sansa never told Jon about the Knights so there wasn't even any talk at all about stalling or going in first with half the army draw Ramsey out then the Knights swoop in. I mean I know the show wanted the suspense of it looking like Jon was going to lose but it just makes Jon and Sansa look dumb and who wants to root for dumb protagonists.

@@wrenneinzbern my theory at the time, and having seen whole show hasn’t changed…..the Lord of Light willed the entire battle to happen the way it did because that’s how it had to be for the looming battle V the dead Everything that happened in the lead up to Jon taking back Winterfell, including the knights of the Vale, most deaths etc had to happen exactly as it did or the entire thing fails and each of those things was the will of the Lord of Light

As to wondering how everyone would know each other....there was a war historian who said that, in old times, battles like this were fought by basically marching up to each other and the fighting only really happened on the front lines. As men went down, the men behind would step forward and keep fighting. It sounds ridiculous today, but at least you knew which ones were your enemies. 😁 Hollywood has basically butchered sword battles for the sake of the action, but I'm not mad at it, this episode was _epic_ !!

As much as Ramsay doesn't care about his men, I also wouldn't call him a bitch for basic strategic decisions. Ramsay knew he couldn't beat Jon in a fight, and he knew once his army was defeated that the smart move was to retreat to a stronger position. The only choice he could've made differently was to stay within Winterfell from the beginning, but of course the Giant kind of ruins their advantage.

I don't think Jon had enough time to retreat even if he wanted to....the archers already locked target on him and he had to charge just to dodge the arrows ... did not have enough time to turn the horse around.

10/10 One of the most thrilling battle scenes of the show Without giving much away, I can say with absolute certainty that the battle scene of this episode is by far the most cinematographically breathtaking visual representation of a battle. All the shots are great, it becomes evident to everyone how much time and energy was invested in the making of this episode. Apart from this, there are other things happening in this one-hour long episode, which are also terribly needed for future development of the show. What may HBO have for us in the season finale? Guess we'll have to see, but in the meantime we can rest assured that every time Miguel Sapochnik directs an episode we are going to be shocked and amazed at the same time. This guy really knows his stuff!

Actually, Jon's been not listening to Sansa for quite a while. And he still isn't. Think about everything Sansa has been through since Ned was imprisoned. She's 100% right when she said no one can protect anyone. She was right about Rickon, and she was right that they needed more men. And she was right when she told Jon not to do what Ramsey wanted him to. Sansa knows everything. Think of all the psychopaths she's learned from. Starting with Cersei. The Hound. Littlefinger. Ramsey. Jon still knows nothing. When he wouldn't listen, she knew he would absolutely forbid working with Littlefinger. If she had told him. He would've said no, and they would've both died.

Sansa was right, Jon lost and Sansa's plea was answered, though LF took his time on purpose.

I absolutely do not agree that Jon would have refused to work with Little Finger. He didn’t want to accept help and men from Ramsey Bolton to help at The Wall cuz he murdered Robb but he did anyway because they needed more men at The Nights Watch. Sansa knows she was wrong. Jon has done nothing but been upfront with her. Sansa is the one that’s sending secret scrolls and hiding the fact that she might have had Little Fingers army. Jon is the one fighting and putting his life on the line and Sansa should’ve trusted and respected him enough to at least let him know they “may” have more men instead of yelling at him that they needed more men.

Another fact ,Ramsay kills Osha, you knew before he even sent the letter that Rickon wasn't going to survive. Here Sansa spoke truth Rickon Died, in S1, she lied and Lady died, but both those deaths were not caused by Sansa's words, they were caused by a vindictive woman in S1 and a vindictive ass hole in S6. Those are facts. Sansa is the only Stark who actually sees clearly what's happening, and part of that is she was around all the snakes who willingly or not showed how they operated. She gave Jon facts and he ignored her inputs and he almost died along with Rickon. Rickon's best chance of survival was if Jon stayed put, as low as that was, this is also a fact.
